The Abs

I need some advice on how to achieve something.

I do a lot of cycling and I'm very thin. Too thin in places but whatever bit of flab I have on me is always on my belly, also I find ab exercises the hardest to do and when I'm cycling big distances/a hard course I'd probably feel some discomfort in my general belly region more than my legs or lungs. I put this down to weak abs that I've never really worked on.

When I do spin classes I can immeadiately feel an improvement in my legs, and I know from cycling how a few training sessions can really improve fitness and strength. I'd like to attack the abs in the same way and see would doing the right exercises bring an improvement.

Because I'm starting from such a low base(in ab strength) I think a some improvement should not be too hard to achieve.

Would anyone recommend soemthing like 3 short sessions a week for a few weeks with a trainer to get started? Does anyone have any experience of this? I find ab stuff so hard to do generally that I can't do it alone.

    Thanks for any advice!

I play GAA and Hurling so any Gym work we do generally focuses on core work (I'm no expert whatsoever though!).

Some good core exercises are The Plank and The Side Bridge, you could try see how long you can stay in the plank position and try improve on that by 5 seconds each week.

The Bicycle is meant to be the most effective abs exercise, maybe aim for 30 seconds doing this. You should definitely feel it if you think you have weak abs. Here's a video of someone doing the Bicycle, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBS-XNiS6fI.

Hope some of these suggestions help you!

I like to do this workout the every now and again after a workout http://fitnessadda.blogspot.com/2008/11/tar-heels-workout.html. It's quite hard but hopefully you see some benefits from it if you try it out!
