meant to be closing at the end of the year
might be just another luttrelstown-type rumour though

I phoned them the other day - the only contact is an 087 number - and got no reply, so I contacted the former GM who left in December. He says he hasn't heard much other than the course is gearing up to open for the summer.. as is now apparent. Excellent rates for a good quality course.

Certainly haven't heard about it closing at year end - where'd you hear that Conno?

This place will do well if it can attract new members and for €800 is a good deal in the Wicklow area. Must check under the mattress to see if there any cash left over!!!

A lot of work being done here at Macreddin. We now have a proper temporary clubhouse, a fleet of buggies since 1.30am this morning. We're open for membership as MasterKZG has mentioned and our greenfee deals are as good as ever.

Thanks to all the golfers that turned out today. Almost a full timesheet of visitors on our first proper day back. Great course reviews and a fantastic buzz about the place.

The flyovers dont even come close to what it is out there in reality. Much better out there but u can get an idea. Go for the green on the 6th, did the last time i was out there..overshot the green and birdied it..:):):)

Does the €800 membership fee include petrol/diesel as well?
It's 50 miles from Dublin. It would cost a fortune in petrol to drive there and back from Dublin.
Sorry, I won't be taking up the offer.

So with so many flyovers is it difficult to concentrate on your game, given the traffic noise above?

tbh LOFT he did make one very valid point,i was one of the original members and the main reason i'm not re-joining is because of the petrol cost, about €15 return and that's taking it handy, also time, you always seem to find a poxy tractor on that road

Last I heard it was in receivership and being managed by Carr Golf - like a lot of other private and council courses with major financial problems.

Were you aware of this when you joined the club....distance wise and the cost of the petrol. Did you take this in consideration when joining?

    Just to clear up some rumors;

We are certainly not closing at the end of the year as is surely evident from the investment and work going on at Macreddin.

Neither clubhouse nor course is being run by Carr Golf. Aindriu and his team of greenkeepers who grew-in the course and maintained it to the highest possible standard from Celtic Tiger through receivership are still on board.

I'm still looking after the sales & marketing, web and clubhouse.

    Thanks,
    D.

I am grown up. But you haven't explained how you can play a game of golf with so many flyovers. I mean you'd be in your backswing and suddenly you hear a juggernaut going by; then a humber; car horns blaring.

Got out there at the weekend and was extremely impressed with the course and the greens in particular. Some of the paths and finishes are still a bit rough and you will need a buggy! Overall was very impressed and it was great value for money. Keep up the good work and I will certainly be back for more.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 315 ✭✭kevin99

They may have reduced their green fees, but there is the added cost now of petrol/diesel for players.
Not sure if its value for money when you also have to hire a buggy. The buggy should be included in the green fee and not be an extra expense.
I know in the UK golf clubs are providing buggies as part of the gree fee.

Hows is your preparation for the Junior Cert coming along???

€30 including a buggy for a midweek game and €45 on a weekend. Good bargain especially the midweek rate.

There's added cost for petrol/diesel when playing any course. That's a stupid argument. If you live in Dublin and you think it costs too much to play there then you don't play there. There €800 membership is exceptional value for a course of that quality.

It is a very salient and relevant point to make given the golf club closed due to lack of membership takeup and given it relied heavily on people in the most populus area to join. And the most populus-area is greater Dublin.
Expecting people to travel 100 miles return for a game of golf in these recession-hit days is ridiculous.
Therefore, upon the club re-opening it behoves management to offer specia discounts to visitors and those players considering taking up annual membership.
I would be asking for €600 annual fee instead of the €800. Prospective members could use the additional €200 for fuel costs.
UK clubs in rural areas have started this marketing strategy and it appears to be working. Similarly, Irish clubs should also follow suit.

Nobody would be expected to travel 100 miles return for any game of golf unless there staying over or whatever. But your argument does not make sense. There is a huge popluation in the Wicklow area and this is probably where most people would come from to play or join this club. Those who come from the greater Dublin area are probably willing to spend a bit including petrol to play in this club. You proposal of a saving of €200 for petrol wouldn't be enough to travel every week if you coming from the greater Dublin. Even in this recession all golf clubs would still be looking to get as much as they can within good value and this is good value

Just get back to your novels and poem mister.

    .......

maybe a bit much if you are a member living 50 miles away, i have a 90 mile round trip to play golf tomorrow and it doesn't bother me one bit because the course is worth it.

2 weeks ago my round trip was 125 miles.

My home club is just under 20 miles from my house but is on my way home from work.

LOL...... I thought you weren't gonna name & shame from yer other thread ! ... tho that's frustrating I grant ya .. we waited 4 months for Callaway tops from a 4 Person Team Event this year (not Macreddin), when they arrived there was 2 smalls and 2 mediums ... I ask ya

I was not too keen on naming them but as you say its very annoying to think that a club in their position are not making more of an effort to impress their clients, given the fact they are looking for members. When I seen the post about having difficulty contacting them and read the spin about 'fantastic prizes for all catagories' from David in the previous post.... well I jumped on the thread in anger.

Alas I have very little to shout about in the winning dept, but I do know that prizes are often whatever the pro or golf shop cant sell. Anyway whats seldom is wonderful for me..... if we ever see our prize

Just talked to him and am glad we have settled the issue, I would like to wish you well with your club and think €800 is great value. I have no doubt that we will see you again soon, as some of the lads are weighing up their membership options.

dtoffee - Glad that you got some satisfaction in the end but could you not have PM'd David to sort this out before going public?Very poor form in my opinion and not what boards golf was intended for I would imagine.
