i started the thread on the iPad OP. looked like a great deal and one of the lads here bought one. turned out to be a fiasco. they are not dodgy, you will get your product more than likely, but there are issues with warranty and their customer service is non existent. i would stay well away

€310 isn't absurdly cheap for a galaxy s at this stage anyway. Not worth the effort for that saving. Adverts.ie would be a far better option! No shortage of galaxy s' around there!

Yes, I'd second that.. got one for my missus for 310Eur 8gb model. A friend also got one from adverts.ie for similar price.

    Good luck

Without throwing stones, such claims are highy suspicious (imo) when you have clearly opened an account on boards.ie just to post that.

nail on head, i researched Simply electronics and the only +ive feedback was from users who just opened accounts and then disappeared.
and not just on Boards.ie but loads of other forum websites.

BTW i nearly purchased something from them before and they wanted me to send them a scanned copy of my credit card, photo ID and a utility bill.
    Stay well away.

fyi - i bought a canon 550d from them just before christmas - delivery was a slow (2 weeks rather than 3 days) - but it arrived and its working perfectly

I bought a canon lens off them last year without any hassle. If I remember correctly they appeared as a seller on amazon.co.uk so I presumed they were okay. Since then I've come across a lot of negative feedback about them so I probably wouldn't risk any high value purchases.

I got a Nikon 35mm lens for 2/3 what they go for in the shops here. Arrived in 3 working days.

I heard of people having problems, but I figured that if I use my Credit Card there is practically no risk.

I was looking at the Nikon 55-200 for 185 quid....want.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21 bearh72

throw all the stones you like folks. its no bother to me if anybody buys off them, i don't own the site.
I gave a response to a question that was asked thats all. And yeah just set up profile ,big deal.I've only just started to look at this site.
As i say that site has nothing to do with me.

Wish I had consulted with the trusted boards.ie, before I placed my order with simply electronics for a nexus phone.

Never heard of this company before, got a link from adverts (who are absolutely not involved in this what so ever) and proceeded with the order.

Next day I got an email saying my order was on hold until I send them a copy of my visa card and utility bill.

I will not give this information out, I explained that I used visa verification code during my order, but this fell on deaf ears, a security measure he said.

I have now cancelled the order, requesting my refund in writing, if not forthcoming I will apply for a charge back from my cc.

I was dealing with someone based in hong kong, perfect english. very polished with all the answers, as if he was following a script.

I actually thought I was dealing with an Irish company, still learning I guess even at my age.

Thought I'd let others know of my experience.

    Hi, very similar story,
Ordered fz45 digital camera, seemed about 30-40 cheaper than elsewhere,
read boards and it seemed about 50/50 success on orders,
paid paypal, waited, after 10days no camera, 20 days i contacted them,
at this stage they now wanted utility bill & visa card scan,
was not keen to provide but sent scan of card with 4 digits shown and an old utility bill, they replied saying the scan was not clear and bill was too old (2 yr), told them to cancel the order,
to be fair the refund came thru in 2-3 days,

ordered from Foto Sense, good price, delivered in 4/5 days , perfect.

" Stay away from simply "

A workmate received his Nikon 70-300mm DX lens on Wednesday. €410 delivered - list price in Ireland is €642. The same lens is €400 for a used one on adverts.

Took just over a week to arrive - he did have to mail them to get things moving, but it took 2 days from when the money left his card to the lens arriving.

That lens is €499 in berminghams. That's the cheapest I've found. (£399 in jessops newry). Still 90 off the Dublin price, so fair enough. I only know because I have been pining after it got a while.
Was it SE that your friend bought it from stimpson?

Not sure if you guys know but all the prices do not include VAT. They are shipped from Hong Kong so if you get stopped by customs you will be liable to pay for all taxes required. HK electronics being cheaper and not having VAT is why their prices are so good.

Great price if you get your shipment without issues though.

Not true. My lens was shipped from Heathrow according to DHL tracking. It also came with a european warranty card.

    You forgot the next paragraph
By purchasing a product through the Site, customers outside of Hong Kong authorize SimplyElectronics.net to make arrangements for clearance of customs on their behalf for the products they have ordered.

Still, no harm in making your competitors look bad, eh?

That does not mean they will pay for your import taxes, nor does it say it will not. My point is that if you get asked to pay for it you can't prove that you have and that you are not liable.

It is your choice who you purchase off but fom this thread it does not seem anyone realises where they operate from. I will know not to bother next time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 104 ✭✭hohojojo

do not order off this crowd they are a really bad company they will look for copies of passport, visa and any other personal details you are advised not to give out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,828 ✭✭✭stimpson

If they are shipping from within the EU then they have already imported the goods. If you were to be hit for duty then you send them back and do a chargeback on your credit card.

I've read several threads on different boards claiming that they ship from HK yet I haven't seen anyone complain that they were hit for import duty. The worst I've seen people have issue with is poor customer service.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 10,520 Mod ✭✭✭✭5uspect

There's been a major clamp down on duty on imported stuff in recent years and Kin is correct, in general. In particular with HK sellers.

Some resellers do handle the additional taxes, such as Ian "Kerso" Kerr who imports into the EU from Canada. By doing so you're also eligible for any rebates.

Simply Electronics have a horrendous reputation. There's been several threads related to them in the Photography forum. For ever happy customer there are ten horror stories. This makes then simply not worth the risk.

Kin said they ship from Hong Kong. My lens was shipped from the UK, as was my friends. As far as I can see, once it's shipped in the EU there is no liability for duty.

I posted my DHL tracking page here on another discussion.

At the end of the day, if you use your credit card there is very little risk and the savings can be very good.

This is actually a chinese knock off company witht he aim of taking your money and delivering you if available for what youve ordered - a high quality replice fake knock off the original. They will not refund you and keep you waiting with excuses forever. So what you must do is contact your card company who after around 90 days dependant on visa or mastercard etc begin a fraud investigation and possibly get you your money back.

WARNING - DO NOT SEND THEM ANY FORM OF PHOTO ID THEY REQUEST FOR ALLEGED VERIFICATION PURPOSES - THIS HAS ONE PURPOSE ONLY. THAT IS FOR YOUR PASSPORT OR DRIVERS LICENSE TO BE SOLD ON THE CHINESE INTERNATIONAL BLACK MARKET.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,268 ✭✭✭✭uck51js9zml2yt

ive bought off them before with no problem.

Ive even cancelled an order before it got shipped and got refunded.

I was never at any time asked for passport or other id.

Were you waiting 90 days for the refund. And lucky you I will say. You are an absolute minority miracle statistic in that case.

tatranska. I was once a victim of their scam and after having information from visa and a police investigation in the UK and a host of other personal miss uses of my information that led me to want to warn others including you. You got your money back after awhile meaning your money was resting in their account no doubt, and you are very lucky.

Their identity theft is a recent scam and just do a google search and you will find thousands of people who have all suffered at the hands of these Con Artists!

Just came across this as I'd heard some bad feedback on this crowd and my missus had ordered a new Xperia Ray phone off this crowd last week and was a bit concerned. Phone arrived yesterday via DHL a week after it was ordered with no problems. Standard box with Sony Erricsson warranty. Paid via PayPal on her credit card and wasn't asked for any ID or copies of card at all?

The one thing I'll say is that she started getting concerned as she never recieved a confirmation mail after ordering and couldn't trace the order number on their site (she'd saved the order number from the confirmation screen after she paid). However, she mailed the customer services manager (a lady called Vanessa) at an e mail address picked off a thread on another site and had a reply within an hour with a DHL reference as the phone had been sent the previous day. Checked the DHL reference and all was in order and the phone arrived the next day.

Seems to me that if you're prepared to wait a bit longer than some other sites you'll be okay, the prices really are rock bottom tho. Hopefully there's no issues with the phone as it does seem there could be hassle with returns but the service so far has been perfect.

Did they charge you the actual € price as appears on the site or do they do a conversion of the £stg price as appears if you search for the item. The reason I ask is that their exchange rate seems good in that the € prices seem less than I'd expect from a conversion of the £stg.

    Example
N7000 white for stg£535 or €586 on the 'Irish' site, stg£535 is equivalent to €623 on xe.com.

They charge the actual € price shown on the site. I recently bought an item off them which was over €100 (Paid via Paypal) and I got free delivery via DHL with full tracking. Item took a couple of days longer than expected, but as it was over the long weekend I suppose I cant complain.
Local call No. which was handy if needed.
    Great service!!

They pretty much ruined a christmas for me and my GF.
I ordered a phone in early dec and despite all their promises it didn't arrive in time.

Loads of empty promises about shipping dates but I had delay after delay.
From my expierence they dont have any stock themselves, but source it as it's ordered thus leading to longer lead times and delays which aren't mentioned on their site. I wouldn't trust their stock status for a minute.

If u order now u should have it by christmas, but DO NOT expect any sort of fast service.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10 HMS

They have a lot of negative reviews but seemed to be legit so I ordered (using PayPal) an Ipad2 off them on the 25th Oct, it arrived exactly a week later. No Irish Tax & Customs bill accompanied the delivery as I was fearing, so I saved about Euro 60 - any less and I probably wouldnt have taken the risk. One point is that their packaging isnt great, the Ipad box was only protected by a single layer of bubble wrap and had a big dent, when I opened it I was half expecting to see a smashed screen, but thankfully no problem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 197 ✭✭bigjoe

You will see quite a bit about them on the photography forum. The general thoughts are they rarely deliver on time which is fine with most people because of the price. Just hope you don’t have problems with the products as they have been known to let people down badly.

This is just one example of treads about them.
