Homemade Muesli

    I want to make my own breakfast cereal but am wondering whats the most nuts and seeds i should put into it before it becomes counter productive, is there any rule of thumb or is it a case of just measure what im putting in

    Really, this is a try it and see thing. Individual tastes will vary. Some people can't touch muesli unless it is 90% fruit and nuts, other people hate that stuff.

    You might try a variation if you are trying to cut down on the extras. In Switzerland, they soak the oats in milk or water for a few hours until they have gone all soft and swollen, then add grated apple, nuts or other toppings and serve it as a dessert.

    its more the, how many nuts and seeds start to make it a not so healthy option, or is this possible

    It really depends on what your goals are. Nuts and seeds, for instance, are a great way to get in some good fats, but if you are trying to lose weight, you may want to limit the amounts.

    Normally, I'd go easy on the dried fruit, but if you have a long cycle to work right after breakfast, you might way the fast carbs to get you up the hills.

    Also the grains in your muesli may play a part.

    Adding nuts and seeds and dried fruit won't make it unhealthy. But they will increase the calories per 100g. So the more nuts you add, the smaller your portion size needs to be.

    When I do it, I weigh everything individually adn work out the calories per 100g of finished muesli, thne work out how big my portion siez needs to be, based on the size I need for breakfast

    Where's the best place to buy nuts and seeds, would it be health shops or supermarkets or does it matter, any brands or stuff to look out for

    Try the baking aisle of your local supermarket, they often have 100g bag bags of unsalted nuts, seeds and fruit for reasonable prices. With the calorie content listed, so you can work out what your muesli comes to.
