I've traveled quiet a lot around Ireland in the last year, and one thing has hit me. People don't talk anymore. I think its quiet sad and I'm a young man

Why have we become like this? It wasn't like this 30 years ago in Ireland

This is a serious question even for A.H. Are we losing our humanity :(

I wouldn't want to talk to a bunch of fcukers who don't let people off the bloody train before trying to barge their way on. :D

A lot of the time too, public transport is a person's only time to be alone in a way, that day. I know it was the case for me before. So I'd like to spend the time with myself listening to music..reading..whatever.

When I'm on the train with friends, we usually bring a card game or something with us. Generally ask anyone sitting next to us if they want to play.

We don't partake in idle chit chat as much these days as our souls have been ripped from our soon to expire carcasses by spiritual vampires masquerading as politicians. We have nothing left to give so keep to ourselves in the hope that we can still live a small simple existence scattered with a few chosen pleasures. Talk to me at your own risk, cause I'm running on empty and it's only a matter of time before just a little piece of small talk sent my way will inconvenience me to point of snapping, as I am just rocking back and forth on the fine line between minding my own business and making you and your family my lunch. Still wanna say hello?

No because I'm bad at small talk and very sensitive to awkward silences.

Only if they are good looking women of a similar age, or they are the type who when you make accidental eye contact they smile at you.

Otherwise I break out my law books to impress people.

    You think that's impressive?

I like to sit in the back seat & roll my cock out up to the front of the bus, like a welcome carpet for people getting on.

    That impresses them even more.

Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

Just turn around there for a second ..

In '87, Huey released Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.

I find myself more and more spontaneously trying to start conversations with random people these days, I'm not sure why. I would have gone scarlet 10 years ago if a stranger tried to talk to me. Even just random little jokes and stuff with people who are in a queue. It's like when you're in a pub after a good feed of booze and feel compelled to talk to everyone.

I thought it might be because I started drinking early in the morning everyday but it's really not, I'm just getting friendlier.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,571 ✭✭✭Aoifey!

I wouldn't know what to say to someone on a bus with me. I'll give them a smile when they get on then do my own thing. I wouldn't mind having a conversation but every time someone tries to start one there's normally a few seconds of talking and then an awkward silence for 5 minues.

Maybe I'm just unsociable, who knows.

Also, did this not annoy anyone else "NO,I talk to people on the Dart/bus/Train". No? Just me? Okay...

I no longer have to take the peasant wagon so don't have to deal with other people, but if you grew up getting the 78a every day you wouldn't talk to people either.

Too many wierdo's on public transport. I remember some bloke a few years ago telling me he used to be possesed by the devil. I just stick my earphones in, even if im not listening to anything.

    Poll option problemo.

No i dont, people who talk on public transport are lonely weirdos.
I dont like people sitting or standing beside me either.
Or looking at me, dont fcuking look at me.
I dont appreciate people telling me i smell of wee either.

No, no one ever wants to hear about my stamp collection. I can't think why. :(

When I'm sitting down looking calm and happy I'd be delighted for someone to come over and talk to me. However no one does.

When I'm clearly trying to read something, write something, or pretending to be asleep, that's when they always try to talk to me and it's always oul fellas. One said to me as his opening line, "are those exam papers you're doing?". I said "no it's just some stuff I've really got to study before I get into college". Did he leave me to it? No. Unfortunately I've got the polite disease so I ended up not getting anything done. And I still don't get why they try to talk to me when I'm pretending to be asleep. Find an awake person would ya.

Where's the poll option for sometimes? Sometimes I'll talk to people, depends on my mood. There are times I get on a bus, full of the joys, happy smiley time, and there are other times I'm knackered, hate the world, put my earphones in and want to vent my frustration with the help of the musical stylings of Rage Against the Machine or Lamb of God.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,424 ✭✭✭Storminateacup

Being friendly is a two way street. If I'm trying to sleep/watch a movie on a plane, leave me alone. Don't prod me in the arm to ask me a question that isn't in relation to a life or death situation.

Sometimes, taking the train is the only time of the day I have time to chill out and actually hear myself think. Once I get off that train, its usually manic for the rest of the day.

Just because they might feel like having a conversation doesn't mean that I do. And its got nothing to do with being friendly. Its being annoying.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15,515 ✭✭✭✭admiralofthefleet

no. there is a weird fella on the dart that goes out of his way to be friendly to women ad tries to start conversations with them. he is a mute though. always gets off at sandymount

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,673 ✭✭✭mahamageehad

I was actually thinking about this the other day. It is kinda sad i suppose.

I had a 20 minute wait for a bus and there was maybe 5 other people waiting at the stop, all with headphones on. If you tried to start a conversation, people would either get annoyed or just think you're weird. The only people who don't seem to be affected by this are old people.

i think that this phenomenon is a great example of how you can be alone in a crowd. I mean, anyone feeling a lil depressed wouldn't exactly have their mood lightened by public transport now would they??

Similar to LimeTime, wouldnt invite people over to chat with me and Im generally not the one to initiate conversations, but Ive had many a chat with people on the bus/train during my commuting days :)

I talk to everyone except the good looking sophisticated women. If they look 'uppish' then tbh I can't be bothered with them.

Because I know they'll only be pulling out their iPhone and twittering about "Oh my GAWD! A creepy stranger just talked to me ON THE TRAIN! HOW BACKWARD!!! I'm leaving this place for a nice modern metropolis"
