I know lots of people who were supposed to do it, but never did...

I'm guessing it's no big deal.

Any sort of ECDL is a scam though... It doesn't teach you how to work a computer, it teaches you how to work one particular edition of one particular software package. I know a few people who did it, and they can use the old version of Microsoft Office no problem. The current version, or any other application? Nope. And any sort of idea how anything on the computer outside Office works? Nope.

100% correct. Thats why everyone hated office 2007, even though it was far superior interface wise compared to 2003.

    Hey,
If any of you know who your class rep is ask them to bring this up in the meeting this Saturday.

Or ask their class rep not to attend the meeting as it's costing €5,000 euro :)

Yes but that €5000 doesnt increase the amount of contribution we have to pay (€91ish) and it won't cost less if they don't go.

No but did any of these class reps ask their classes if they'd like the money spent on this junket? And saying it won't cost less if they don't go isn't really an argument at all is it?

I don't think the class reps had a say in the matter. The council organized this way before there were any Class Reps.
So what is the sense in them not going? They just won't be able to complain about any problems. It wouldn't help any situation.

They won't be able to complain about problems like that at the training anyway. That's what Union Council is for. And then you can't just bring random stuff up anyway I think.

Hmmm, what council? The council is the class reps.

Secondly the union only exists with the mandate of the students. It's meant to be democratic.

Thirdly, they shouldn't go because some students would like their money spent on worthy causes, not 5,000 quid on unnecessary accommodation. If they refuse to go they can simply attend the next union council. There won't be a union council without the class reps.

Yeah but the €5000 would go to better things to help the student body. Wouldn't cost us any less but we'd be getting value for our money.

Well I haven't done it yet and I don't intend to . Just wondering how strict they are on it though.

It says on moodle it's compulsory for my course but then it also says :
For administrative reasons, students will not be prevented from progressing or graduating if they have not obtained the ECDL but please note that you cannot register for certain modules in second and third year of your degree if you do not hold the ECDL License.

That sounds good. Don't know what tot think though really?

I've never heard of anyone not being allowed to progress/graduate because of it.
But if it says that on moodle, perhaps they will stop you from taking certain modules. I wonder which modules they'd stop you from doing, though?

Also, ECDL License? Who wrote that? Tautology.

It mentioned E marketing, project management and social media.

I might seem ignorant here, but if the choice is forgoing those modules versus doing and paying for the ECDL, then I know what I'm going to do!

Just hoping that moodle message is for certain. Most people I know have it done or are doing it, so i suppose I'm taking a risk.

its blatantly obvious that its a scam but it doesnt prevent the masses of idiots from doing it.

Just so you know the Finance, Economics and Accounting Department dont require the ECDL anymore.
