    http://www.fxnetworks.com/shows/originals/wilfred/
Wilfred is a half-hour, live-action comedy about "Ryan," a young man struggling unsuccessfully to make his way in the world until he forms a unique friendship with "Wilfred," his neighbor's canine pet. Everyone else sees Wilfred as just a dog, but Ryan sees a crude and somewhat surly, yet irrepressibly brave and honest Australian bloke in a cheap dog suit. While leading him through a series of comedic and existential adventures, Wilfred the dog shows Ryan the man how to overcome his fears and joyfully embrace the unpredictability and insanity of the world around him.
Wilfred is based on the critically acclaimed Australian series of the same title and was adapted for FX by David Zuckerman (Family Guy, American Dad, King of the Hill). Zuckerman also serves as Executive Producer along with Rich Frank, Paul Frank and Jeff Kwatinetz of Prospect Park and Joe Connor and Ken Connor of Renegade, producers of the Australian version of the series. Jason Gann serves as Co-Executive Producer. Wilfred is produced by FX Productions.
Elijah Wood (Lord of the Rings, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Happy Feet) stars as "Ryan" and Jason Gann, who co-created and starred in the Australian series, plays the title character "Wilfred." Series regulars also include Fiona Gubelmann as "Jenna," Ryan's beautiful neighbor and Wilfred's owner, and Dorian Brown as "Kristen," Ryan's sister.

    What did people think then?

When I first saw summary I was like what the hell is this crap, but Ellijah Wood stirred my interest a bit.

I thought it was ok, it did have some funny moments :)

Just watched the first episode of this, didn't see a thread. I seriously p1ssd myself all through the episode, can't wait to see more. Hilarious, highly recommend checking it out!

Saw the first two episodes, it's... different :)
    Good stuff though.

very funny. spotted this a while and read up about it. Its the American version of an Australian show. Its the same bloke that plays the dog in both. So far very similar jokes to the Australian show but still good to hear them again. The budget was very small for the original so its nice to see a bit of money put behind it.

I watched this the day after it started in the US and really liked it. Not sure if I want to look up the Aussie version in case it ruins a lot of what will come up down the line.

Seen the first 2 episodes. Pure gold.

Is the Australian version worth checking out or do they follow similar stories/jokes?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 145 ✭✭dots104

its not a straight copy as far as i see but i have only seen a couple of episodes of each and they do seem to overlap a little.

There's an Australian version? I saw there's a short under Jason Ganns profile on IMDB.

    Great show, love it.

I started watching the Australian version after seeing the US one, it's very different.

Aussie humour is quite different though alright..

.. this exchange last week was superb:
"Go pick someone on the list"
    "These are all dogs...OK. Lassie."
"You can't screw Lassie. She's my wife. Now pick someone off the list."
"The only other name on here is Scrappy-Doo."
"That's sick, Ryan. He's only 10 months old. What? Are you into kiddies? Is that your thing?"
"I didn't have any other choice."
"You could have taken a pass."

how could he do that to bear!?

this show is like a live version of Calvin and Hobbes, if Hobbes was a sadistic narcisist

Favourite part was when Ryan says he might have to get a job, Wilfred smacks him across the face and says job are only for immigrants:D

To be honest I'm keeping up with the US version at the moment. I started out liking it but Wilfred himself is starting to annoy me at this stage. He's OK in small doses but he's a bit of a smart alec and after a while you just want to put him down! I haven't enjoyed the latest shows as much as the earlier ones. It started to turn for me around the time wilfred and ryan went to the retirement home.

Another thing that annoys me is that we know everybody else besides Ryan sees Wilfred as a regular dog. I just don't know why other people in the show pat him at the same height you'd expect to pat a human at. It's just started to bug me lately!

Downloaded and watched the first 5 or 6 episodes of this the other night and was pleasantly surprised, really funny and different! I'd like to see the Aussie one for comparison.

Watch this on BBC3 (heck it's a pot smoking dog, what's not to like) but their timing sucks putting it up against Shameless and I manage to miss the repeat some weeks.
Excellent though... must acquire it and catch up on the bits I've missed...

They do pat him at regular height. But that's not what Ryan, and therefore we, sees.

Allison Mack will play Amanda, a love interest for Ryan and she is expected to appear in multiple episodes.
Wilfred's second season premieres Thursday the 28th of June 2012.

A bit of an odd episode, didn't think it was great.

Didn't watch the new episode yet but don't know if I will. The first series got really depressing and dark in the last few episodes and the laughs were a lot fewer and further between!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,990 ✭✭✭squonk

I liked this episode. The reality/fantasy thing was pretty interesting. Sadly the last scenes show that things might be going back to the way they were. I really hope not. At the end of last season I really thought the best ending would have been Wilfred getting put down. Last year the show wasn't weird enough to be interesting or goofy enough to be funny. I really don't like Wilfred too much and Ryan is an idiot. I hadn't high hopes going into the S2 pilot but it was better than I thought. Lets hope they can keep that going now.

Halfway through Season 2, the show itself is a bit all over the place and nonsensical at times but one of the funniest shows I've ever seen purely due to its sheer simplicity and laugh out loud moments.

When Ryans massaging Wilfreds leg and Wilfred jizzes on him for example, had me in stitches.

Season 3 of Wilfred’s back Thursday June 20th at 10p on FX.
