Where will Air Force One land in Ireland ?

So when Obama touches down on Irish soil next month where will Air Force One land ? Dublin Airport I presume ?

Where will it park on the airfield ?

Will it be easy to get a good vantage point to capture it on video, or will the usual viewing spots be restricted for "security reasons" ?

How would it affect normal operations at the airport ?

Sorry for all the questions. Just intrigued by the whole thing.

Well the Indo today speculated that his itinery would be Dublin first with a public speech in Croker,he will overnight then trip to MoneyGall before heading to the UK.

I would hazard a guess that he will land in Dublin, get heli or cavalcade to Croker. Not sure where he will stay the night though. Next day heli to Moneygall (a house down there has been scouted as a possible heli landing spot)followed by heli to Shannon or Dublin for the flight to UK.

The VC-25 may well land into Dublin but could could then fly to Shannon to overnight as that airfield is more isolated and thus better for security reasons.

He will be staying in the american ambassadors residence in the phoenix park. easy to secure etc...

Well the army are back around Shannon the last week or so and I see lots of goings on around the place to suggest they are preparing for it.

Would Baldonnel Aerodrome not be the obvious choice - a lot more secure than a public airport??

Not if the VC 25 (747) will be used or even the C-32 (757) and I can't see why either wouldn't be used.

Ya ur right - i didnt think of size. The hurling field in moneygall is rumored to be a landing site there too.(i live near by). But by all accounts only locals and people with written invites from locals will be allowed near the village!

Edit: im talkin about heli landing in moneygall obviously!!

According to wiki its main runway 11/29 is 6,001ft long. Not sure if that is all available either. Would seem a tad small for a 747 although again not sure on the weight of it given that there are so many modifications for airbrone warning, comms and avionics etc. Would have thought Dublin or Shannon more likely.

Expect carnage around whichever airport anyway as they close airspace and lengthy slot delays. Yippee.

Air Force One can not land at EIME as the Runways are too short, but a 757 can and has before.

Shannon would actually be more secure than Baldonnel. EIME is very close to a lot of urban area. I'm not sure what barriers exist around the perimiter of Baldonnel.
Shannon is isolated so easier to track/block traffic around the area. In addition the size of Shannon allows them to quarantine the VC-25 in the airfield. With least movements than Dublin it is easier to keep the aircraft secure at Shannon.

After the runway getting attacked a few weeks ago, it would seem there are few, if any barriers....

The runway was not attacked, the incident was recently confirmed as being caused by lightning strikes during a severe thunderstorm in that area.

Well if Thor wants to take a pop at POTUS or the VC-25 as he did to the runway at EIME last week, well no security will stop him........

Why would he land in Shannon if he is doing most of his visits in Dublin and Moneygall. I would hazard a guess that he will land in Dublin and there will be a motorcade to Croker or a reception in the Aorus or other residence. then a heli trip to moneygall. the only reason bush landed in Shannon was the EU leaders conference in Dromone castle back in 2003. it doesn't make sense to land in Shannon for a visit to Dublin. The secret service have had to secure tougher airports than Dublin. Trust in their methods and experience as i am not a special agent in charge and none of you are either:D:D

However there might be a bit of an extra panic on after the 500 pound bomb found on the m1 motorway not a million miles away from the flight path approach to dublin. Can you imagine the live feed on rte, bomb brings down Air force One on Irish soil. we'd be flavor of the month then.

Would they maybe consider RAF Valley and then heli to Dublin and beyond?

I remember seeing Clintons C-17 landing here in Dublin when he was here last. A couple of days before Airforce one arrived if I remember correctly. Possibly the most imposing thing I have ever seen..

No C17s visited Dublin during the Clinton visits and so far only two of the type have landed at Dublin

the 1st C-17A to visit Dublin was in June 2008

and this one diverted in on 14/01/2010

I was doing work experience for two weeks in Irish Helicopters at the time of clintons visit and seen the C-5A Galaxys landing i was right beside RWY 28 some sight they are massive, jolly green giant helicopters were on board and the presidents vehicles i say the C-17 will be transporting most of the stuff doubt there will be any C-5A'S

That would be for the Secret Service, POTUS now uses a Blackhawk ( VH-60N "WhiteHawk" ) as "Marine One", The C-17 no doubt will do all the heavy lifting.

I think i read online that C-17's have landed in casement before?

A C-17 did, once off. "Reach 496", was there for about one hour give or take, departed to RAF Mildenhall after, Dropping off Two Guantanamo detainees to Ireland.

Serial 01-0189, operated by the 437th Air Wing, Charleston AFB, South Carolina.

That must be a first in Irish meteorolgy. I don't believe it for a second.

If this is the case, on average other roads in Ireland should be affected by the same phenomena. I've never heard of this. I would accept weather attrition due to the snow and ice over this reason.

He is flying into Dublin Monday Morning and leaving early Tuesday.

Lightning damage happens to runways, conspiracy theory away if you must but its a perfectly reasonable explanation.

No specific times yet I guess. Going to try and get up from Cork to watch it depart on the Tuesday.

Have you seen the average Irish road?
How would you identify a pothole caused by lighting from the rest? :D

I've heard that if Air Force One requires fuel it has to come from a tanker that has been guarded and crew techs carry out tests on it before a drop gets pumped.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,321 ✭✭✭Foggy43

All fuel is tested whether from a tanker or Bowser before being pumped on an aircraft. A sample is taken and just takes a few minutes. Checked for contamination and Specific Gravity/Relative Density

I've heard she's flying into Cork anyway. Queen's flight I presume but not sure of that.

Does anyone have details on his motorcade and how that will arrive?

Usually Air Force One is preceded by a Starlifter cargo plane that brings the secured limousines in which the President travels. I'd be interested in seeing that, as it's a monster of a plane from what I can tell.

The Queen will be landing at Baldonnel on Tuesday 17th and departing from Cork on Friday 20th. I presume she will be travelling on the Queens flight, BA don't fly scheduled to here anymore(AFIK) just codesahre with Aer Lingus.

So could i watch airforce one from perimeter of dublin airport? do any fighters travel with it? Or do choppers protect airspace round the airport where it is landing?

Not a chance! All perimeter roads will be closed, only essential staff will be allowed past the cordons(me!)

Soon after arriving he will depart to moneygall by helicopter

As the road around the airport is close.
Is it possible to see it from "the eating place" and skyview bar. Both have the view to the apron and runway 10/28 and partly of 16/34

Seems strange but why not do it that way, allows extra time to screen all the people in the city centre.

So: Dublin- Tipp- City Centre- The Aras- US residence in Phoenix Park?

Any idea of a time for arrival on the Monday?

So Old Airport Road will be closed too I guess ? Does anybody know how long everything will be closed, during the entire visit or just for landing/take off ?

    Greetings,

i don't see they closing the old airport road to pedestrians there will be obviously a huge military and garda presence with cars and military ffr's at all stations as if for an emergency landing and as of a few minutes to touch down traffic will be stopped but pedestrians will be walking the road. camera crews and the amateur photographer (me) will be camped there all morning waiting for the biggest story of the year as the state is concerned US president Obama in Ireland its a gold mine to the state. why close the raod, if someone really wanted to take a pop at the plane they could be camped out in howth somewhere not inside a security cordon area where the chance off escape is very slim. with more secret service knocking about then in Washington DC. just think like a terrorist. its easy our nation was founded as such:D

I hope you're right. I'm flying up and down from Cork for the day and was hoping to stroll down to the viewing area with my video camera to get some footage. Wishful thinking probably but hopefully they'll let us amateur enthusiasts in on foot.
