Cost of Queen and Obama visits worries Irish police

What do people think? Sounds like they are in a bit of a panic and trying to work out how they should police this. Its not just the terror attack they will need to worry about, what about the potential riots which could be shown all over the world?

We should spend the same on policing for them as they would if Enda Kenny made a visit to the US or UK.....methinks it wouldn't be much!!!

Who cares about some German bint coming to visit anyway!

why would the cost worry the "police" ... they dont pay the bill and I'm sure plenty of them will enjoy the "overtime" money.

Can't they just do these official state visits by Skype?

True but first part of the article
The main representative body for Irish police is concerned that most of the Garda's annual budget will be spent on big policing events next month.

They have one annual budget and a lot of it will be spent in May and possibly very little left for overtime the rest of the year.
Mightn't affect the garda on the street.
But lots of operations are limited as there is no money for overtime

Ridiculous statement, they are given a budget for the year, and this will take a massive chunk of it. This will leave a big hole in their crime prevention budget, which is already practically non existent.
With the reductions in numbers and reduction in the policing budget your police force are fast becoming a reactive rather than proactive force. Meaning all the resources available will be held back to investigate crimes after they've occurred rather than investing in crime prevention measures/community policing.
Very similar to what happened around the world in the 80's, including Ireland I believe.
These state visits are a huge drain on resources, as if it wasn't bad enough that places like Limerick are draining a disproportionate amount of their budget.

Actually, they do pay the bill. Gardaí pay taxes just like the rest of us.

They should have had the Obama visit first, because I doubt there will be much of Dublin left to see after Lizzy visits.

so do the gardai tell the government ... sorry - we cant fund the state visit ... so we either get more money ...or we call in a "blue flu" day(or 2) !! ..... please ... the only stuff that wont be funded will be those which were excessive to requirements anyway.

maybe some gardai will not be allowed to participate in the international police force marathon or garda olympics - unless they can find sponsors....maybe hotels will have to be 3star instead of 4star.

All you can do is laugh, do you honestly think the state pays for them to run in marathons or other sporting activities? If you do then bless your cotton socks..

You are obviously living in the clouds, the country is nearly bankrupt, where is the extra money going to come from? Reading the paper yesterday, the budget has already been reduced from what they got in the first quarter.

The UEFA Cup final is going to cost a fortune too...

The americans contribute a lot to the presidents visit dont they? I thought they shipped in lots of security and took care of logistics and that and the Gardai co-manage it?

Apparently there'll be fighter jets and blackhawks over head and our mobile phones will be cut out for awhile!

So flights are effected, business phones are down, etc...
Understandable to some extent but surely a tad too much?

I cant give you a source. I read it in a paper a few weeks back and cant for the life of me remember where.

Don't think flights will be affected. Precautionary fighter jets overhead in case one decides to "detour". Mobile phones will be a pain alright but it may just be in the vicinity of where he is visiting?

It is very extreme alright but tis the Americans. They've got form like!

The child in me thinks... cool, aeroplanes!

The adult in me thinks, what a hugely pointless amount of effort just so some morons can wave American flags and harp on about 'the president's visit' in 40 years.

Surely that's not all true though? The jets and phones part I mean. I don't doubt there'll be some security brought over.

So if a plane diverts and tries to fly into a building housing Obama and the Irish Government the helpful Americans will shoot it down over some subarb in Dublin instead thats full of civillians. Good to have them on our side.

Draft the defence forces for the security op, what else have they got to be doing and spending their money on anyway apart from following trucks from the mint.

Then the Gardai can go and maybe stop a crime or two

Whatever happened to subtlety with these extremists? Why in my day if you wanted to kill a president you just shot him with a rifle and made sure someone else took the blame.

    Back, and to the left.

Ok, that should guarantee me a visit from some men in black in the near future. My work here is done.

That article which i cant remember () explained pretty much all the security precautions that are in the public domain that follow around a US president when he goes travelling. I'm sure there's probably more as well that the public don't know about. Massive costs involved to the Americans I'd say for every trip abroad Obama takes.

If this is the American forces you are on about, they would probably miss and shoot down a inocent aircraft and put it down to friendly fire. FFS, whats friendly about shooting down the wrong target.

Or two, your being a bit over optamistick arnt you?

Anyway, state visit security should come direct from central government, not garda budget, guarda didnt invite them.

Limerick does drain a disproportionate amount of money and resources relative to it's size and population.

Do I need to explain anything else for you?

limerick the 3rd largest city in the country, please show me where over 33% of the funds that gardai receive between dublin cork and limerick, are going directly into combating crime in limerick, i think you need to spend sometime here and stop reading rags

I think the tourist board should be contributing greatly to the various costs. Footage of these visits is going to be shown all over the world. There will be tourism benefits (if we do it right).

Moneygall is right on the Tipperary/Offaly border
Village in Offaly but the GAA pitch is in Tipperary.

They used to vote in Laois Offaly but got moved to the brand new Tipperary North-South Offaly

Either way, I expect to TD's and councillors from both constituencies there and looking for a photo op.

Tipperary and Offaly will both try to claim the place

Lol at all the republicans convinced Dublin will be trashed.

There will be the same pathetic demonstration as there was outside Croke Park a few years back and that's it.

There may be a lot of people against this visit, but a hell if a lot more who don't want their country to look foolish in front of the worlds media.

There will also be a lot of fools in the Irish media who would love to see a load of skangers in Celtic jerseys making a show of themselves in Dublin, just like the Love Ulster farce, so they can continue with the postcolonial guilt trip on the rest of us.

I said places "like" Limerick or are you just being obtuse?

If you don't know what I mean when I say "disproportionate" to size and population, then I can't explain it any clearer.
Limerick may be the 3rd biggest city in Ireland, but it's population is relatively small. Yet it cost more to police Limerick last year than it did Cork, as it has for the past number of years.
Limerick got 100 extra Gardai recently, Specialist Units from Dublin are deployed to Limerick constantly. A second Armed Response Unit is to be created for Limerick, I could go on...

Anyway I am not going to derail this thread any further, when I first moved here I lived in Limerick City for a number of years, I only left because of work. It's a beautiful city and good fun. I just thought it important to highlight that.

They shouldnt spend any extra money on bringing more police to these events.

Fellas like OBama should walk the street by themselves just like any of the rest of us would.

If we gave him an old Nissan Almera and he arrived on an ordinary commercial airline nobody would actually believe it was him. He could do whatever he liked without all the palaver and crowds follwing him

Plain-clothed British intelligence officers will probabably outnumber the Guards by about 1000 to one, so €50 will be the bit paid for by the Irish tax-payer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,643 ✭✭✭SHOVELLER

Obviously the hope is the future tourist numbers will outweigh all security costs. I hope Moneygall and Shinrone enjoy their time in the spotlight but cant help wondering why the locals would not have cleaned and painted their own town without a US President visiting.
