What do people think of big crowds of fans leaving before the final whistle?

I don't think it is proper at all. No matter how bad they are losing the home support should stay, to give the team at least something.

I think it depends. If your team are being trounced by a much better team & trying their best, I think most people would stay until the end.

But if they're putting in a lifeless, spiritless display & seem like they don't give two figs about the result regardless of who they are playing, then I wouldn't be arsed staying until the end.

It's like people who stand up at matches when there's action in the box, FFS you're not the only one there, plus you see more sitting down...

If your team scores then yeah stand up and celebrate but not beforehand

Leaving before the final whistle? Waste your admission fee, I don't care! Champions league 99 anyone?

Theres a big difference in leaving the stadium early to beat the crowds and leaving because your team is 3 nil down!

Eh... gonna have to debate that one.

Personally I never leave before the final whistle.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

My Dad was at the 99 CL final and he told me 3 United fans in front of him left with 3 minutes to go as they had enough. Ouch

I was at the manchester darby a few seasons ago when Owen scored the winner. I talked to some Irish lads in the airport after who left when we were up 3-2.. they missed citys equaliser and then Owens goal. The amount of money and effort it takes to get to these games (for irish fans especially) it so stupid to leave early.

I think leaving before the final whistle is pathetic (if your sole reason is because your team is losing) same with booing, your team needs your support the most when they are losing..

I rarely sit at matches. Leave early even less even through the Farelly era.

Think the only time I ever left math early was when United beat Everton 3-0 at OT last season. Left with about 30 seconds to go.

Otherwise its been to see whole thing.

I've noticed at certain games the crowds start to leave even if the game is level or there's only a single goal between the teams, the main culprits are Utd. Chelsea,Arsenal and City. You made time to go to the game so what's so important that you can't stay 'til the end???
I personally stay 'til the final whistle-you never know what you might miss.

i have no problem leaving early, if you pay money for a ticket your entitled to do whatever you want, forget all this talk of the team needs your support, football players dont care about fans

I think is a disgrace to be honest, I'd never leave a game early.

I've never left a game early and never will.

People will say it's to get away ahead of the traffic but you'll be in plenty of traffic regardless. Fair enough if you're getting beat 3-0 with a few minutes to go.

I suppose it's up to people what they choose to do after spending their own money, but I can't see the point myself and it certainly does nothing for the players when they see fans streaming out of the ground.

If you stayed you got to abuse him as he walked off the pitch at full-time :D

Never leave early from matches, might stand in the aisle of Block F just before the full-time whistle if I am legging it for a lift or something.

Never have, never will, no matter how much my team is getting hammered.

Despise seeing people do it and class it as highly disrespectful.

What you can miss? Personnally I stay behind to clap the players off, home or away from home, win or loss. If we happen to score a goal, well in good.

Bernabeu is shocking for this. You regularly see fans leaving early in matches that are either level or have one goal in them. I was at the Madrid derby in the cup and at 2-1 with three minutes to go about a third had already left.

Then again these are the same 'fans' who even while beating Spurs 3-0 could be heard booing if one of their players gave away possession.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,588 ✭✭✭daithijjj

Ive probably left early (86th/87th minute) practically 90% of the games ive been too. Alot of them evening games.

The reason is simply that the next 5mins determines whether i had gotten home at 1am or 4am due to the fact that the motorway from liverpool to birmingham closes into one lane at night and its a fkin nightmare, think im joking?, no chance, its not uncommon to see 7 or 8 teams playing in the northwest area and all of them having to go back into one lane south. I had a job to get up for in the morning. Going to games in the uk from ireland is different, you tend to book the time off if you can. I couldnt really justify the time off, spend enough on fuel and tickets in the first place.

LOL at this comment I came across after the Manc Everton game in 2009.

"what's embarrassing is that your fans left were gone after ten seconds and also, even more embarrassing is that your fans didn't even sing. Didn't even sing at Wembley! Don't care what team you are or whatever your priorities are, if you don't sing at Wembley when it's scouse v mancs you're support is ****ing ****. Never heard a peep out of you all game. You basically came sat down and left. That's what's embarrassing"

    he wasnt wrong...

I always found Manc Fans rather dry and for the size of old trafford the atmosphere is pretty $hit.

But, yeah. Leaving early is pretty bad form.

    I am against it.. :)

Never have left a game early no matter how good/bad my team were doing.

As a kid I was brought to all the games with my dad and I remember as a 13 yo as we were 3-0 down at home to Spain why are they leaving. I kinda knew and was pissed off that a load of people around us fecked off at 3-0 down.

Ended up that the goal John Sheridan scored in 2nd half to make it 1-3 got us thru to WC 94 on goal difference :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,778 ✭✭✭Pauleta

Ive only done it once. We were 4-0 up on aggregate with about 5 minutes left and their was a World Cup game on TV. Otherwise i would never dream of leaving a game early. If your team gave their best, applaud them off. If they didnt put any effort in, stay and boo them. I dont get the whole trying to beat the traffic thing either. Even for a highly attended game, the stadium is empty after about 5 minutes and the surrounding areas by about 15. I would rather sit in the ground for 10 minutes after the match and have a clean route home than leave 5 minutes before the end and fight through the crowds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,206 ✭✭✭gustavo

I rarely do it as I usually want to clap the players off the pitch - I hate to see people do it especially if the team is a goal down or if we've played well enough but just haven't had the luck. I don't mind it so much if we've been rubbish and are getting hammered

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,709 ✭✭✭✭Cantona's Collars

I'm a United fan so late drama has been the norm, was looking back at footage of '99 when fans were leaving Villa Park as Bergkamp stepped up to take the pen which Schmeichel saved,The CL final was the same with stories of fans missing UTD. winning it in injury time.
I prefer to stay and applaud the team for their efforts, what's a few minutes?
Even stood 'til the end in the Stretford End as Liverpool hammered us 4-1.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 183 ✭✭ClareVisitor

I would never leave early and I don't understand people who do. First and foremost you support your team. Secondly, with theprice of tickets, I'd want to have as much time as I can get out of it!

The ones that really make me sick are those who drag their sons off to the station ten minutes before the end with the little fella looking back to catch all the action he can.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,560 ✭✭✭✭Kess73

Never got it myself. If you go to a game, then you have to be prepared to be there for a loss or a bad performance, and not just expect a great win.

One of our group walked out at half time during the CL final in 2005. The fact he was in a different country and would have to wait for us outside never came into it for him, let alone singing along with the rest of us for that 15 minutes before the teams came back out. No amount of cajoling would convince him to stay and see out the game.

He got to listen to next 80 or 90 minutes worth of excitment from outside the ground, and missed an amazing finale. He had basically travelled to Turkey to end up listening to a game from the outside.

For me staying to the end is a must. Sure it means getting to experience the bad stuff in terms of losses and so on, but every now and then there is a surprise finish and that makes sitting through the shyte ends worthwhile for me.

cant believe the attitude of some people,

If I buy a ticket for a match I will come and go as I want. After all its my ticket.

If we were down and out and not giving a damn, and traffic was gonna be a nightmare...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,252 ✭✭✭✭stovelid

I would always stay until the end but it's hard to judge without knowing the fans in question. And also the score of the game.

I don't really like the fair weather fans who leave early when the team is trailing and needs a bit of support but then if the game is done and dusted and maybe people have come a long distance to watch the game and need to make a bus or train or something...

To be honest, if they keep coming back and paying in, that's probably the main thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,839 ✭✭✭Jelle1880

Depends on the circumstances, but if you leave early and miss a late winner, burn :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 946 ✭✭✭Predalien

Wouldn't leave to beat traffic or anything like that, but when your team is getting battered and you can't face watching them anymore then I think it's fair enough to leave. Can be torture when your team is obviously inferior and is showing no sign of improving.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,252 ✭✭✭✭stovelid

Leaving when the team is getting a hiding is counter-productive sometimes. If they tried but were just outclassed or had a dog of a game, staying on to cheer them off lifts them for the next game. You're supporting a club for the long run not one game.

I'd doubt they'd take much of a boost from fans staying around a few minutes longer when they've been battered 4-0, don't think leaving when you can't face watching them be outclassed makes you any less of a fan as long as you're back next time they're playing.

I guess cup finals will always have a lot of supporters that don't go to games week-in, week-out and are thinking of traffic and whatnot but it doesn't make it less hurtfiul when you think ther team needs a lift.

had a nieghbour of mine sitting in front of me at old trafford when rio scored a late winner against liverpool, he got up at the 84 min as he wanted to make sure he got a quick bus into town after, still bring it up when i see him in the pub the fool (though he got his quick bus)

I think leaving a cup final before your team gets their medals, either Silver or gold is poor form particularly if it's the last game of the season. Stay and applaud them for their efoort throughout the tournament/season

Ibrox is horrible for it, no matter what the score you see thousands of people heading out the turnstyles from 75minutes.

I dont get it, supporters go on and on about how important they are to the club, and how important creating an atmosphere is for the team - yet they fail in the simple task of staying and supporting.

Exactly, and if you're a fan of the club that you went to see you'll stay till it's over.

I've left one Arsenal game early, I needed to get to the other side of London in a hurry. They happened to be losing at the time but I'd have stayed if I wasn't in a rush.

Also left the Ireland - Andorra game a few minutes early to get a seat on the train. Really that was some boring shít and the game was dead as a contest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,292 ✭✭✭TangyZizzle

I leave early and feel no shame in doing so. As someone has said, I paid for the ticket - Ill leave when I want *smug face*. In saying that, the score of the match has no bearing on it whatsoever, what does though - is the number thirty fookin three. Last night for example it was either leave at 8:25 and get a bus home fairly sharpish (and miss Rovers equaliser ffs) or stay the extra few minutes and be left waiting for a bus until 10:40ish.. No thanks.

Only done it the once myself. Losing 4-0 to Holland in Lansdowne road, left with 5 mins left on the clock.

I've never done it in Dalymount or OT, even the 4-1 hammering the Pool gave us :(

Few Ireland matches I've been to in the last two years I've left early to beat the crowds and the traffic.
