If you were jailed, for a crime you didn't commit...

What would you do? I was reading an article about false convictions in the US and it got me thinking. What would you do if you got locked up, say for a long while, 10-20 years, and you knew you hadn't done the deed.

Ethically speaking, what would be permissible? If given the opportunity should you escape? What if you had to kill a guard to do it? The State, after all, has essentially failed to uphold it's half of the social contract by jailing an innocent man (or woman) so do you owe that State and it's agents any consideration at all?

I think I'd probably go mad tbh. It'd be bad enough facing 20 years if I actually did chop up my gf and her mother and feed them to dogs, but if I didn't do it? I don't know. Probably see me at the end of a noose. :(

I think depending on circumstances I'd be able to take a hostage in order to escape, morally speaking. Some physical violence, but nothing permanent. I might also do some low level contraband smuggling in prison to carve a gun from a bar of soap and some explosive to look like a bar of soap.

    It's an intricate plan.

I'd do an Andy Dufrense on it (as in become a criminal whilst in prison despite being perfectly law-abiding in the outside world, not form a quasi-sexual relationship with an avuncular black man).

I'd repeatedly tell my genius brother that I'm innocent and then hope he comes up with a mastermind plan to get himself incarcerated so that he can break me out of prison with a very complicated plan so that I avoid the death penalty.

    Or something.

What is it, double jeopardy??? If it was something I hadn't done and had served time for it, when I did get out you could commit the crime but have already done the time ;):D

This is the story of the Hurricane,
The man the authorities tried to blame,
    For somethin he never done,
    Put in a prison cell,
But one time he coulda been,
    the champion of the world.

I'd go crazy. Literally. Not sure I'd ever cope with it.

I know of a man who is doing his final year of an 8 year sentence for stabbing a man.

He didn't do it. That is a long time to lose from your life when you don't deserve the punishment.

I thought he was found innocent and then found guilty again or something? What was the final final final judgement?

If I got Ronnie Barker as a cellmate, I'd be happy enough to settle in and enjoy the laugh. I'd be happy enough with Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder either. If I ended up in Cell Block H I'd stick on an awful Ozzie accent, become Bea's prison wife and let her protect me and conceal the fact that I was in a women's prison.

I'd constantly protest my innocence to anybody who would listen. I'm sure that would set me apart from all the other inmates, thus resulting in my immediate release.

As soon it was possible, I would find the most deserving child abusing, sex offender and take him out from this world, spreading his blood and body parts around as much area as possible and in the most gruesome way. Hopefully he goes screaming his lungs out before I allow him that final grasp of precious breath!
It would send out a message.
"If your going to mess with this asshole, come serious and ready to die! Now leave me the fcuk alone ...or else...!"

Jesus fúck Biggins... And I thought you were the conscience of AH or something

You're not thinking it through though, how do you know he's not innocent too? I mean, you have first hand experience of how an innocent man can be jailed for a horrific crime...

I'm halfway through all 4 seasons - they should have let it go after 2 seasons, believe me.

I would have thought it through. I would have checked to see if the person had a record of doing the things he was in for this time around.
If so and there was no sign (after multiple attempts by services to change him) then his last (and possibly only good) use to this world, would be to send out a warning to others.

We talking hypothetical here so I'll hopefully never get to see a prison...
    ...but if I do! :pac:

I'm pretty sure whoever jailed you as an innocent man would have "thought it through" and "checked" as well - what's the difference

I'm reading Papillon at the moment and I was gonna say to escape at all costs.
But French Guiana is quite different from a prison with barbed wire, high walls and cameras. Would be rather difficult to leave the country too.

I suppose I'd just try to resign myself to the fact that I'm there for a while, keep fighting it in the hope that I will soon be out and to be the receiver of a large settlement. I would also educate myself as much as possible and try not to get it in the ass.

I... yes, but he may be innocent as well. That's what we're saying.
You have no way of knowing for sure.

Again because you seemed to have missed an important point in a previous post - if the person had previous many jail times and convictions for the same disgusting crimes...

I'd capture the heart of a nation by smearing feces all over the walls,
Thus proving my innocence once and for all.

I'd go back and actually commit the crime I was wrongly accused of, then tell them I have the years already done for it in advance.

The worst part of the sentence would be sharing intimate confines with junkie skobes on a 24 hour basis.

If I was in a cell on my own I wouldn't mind at all, in fact I'd probably enjoy the peace and quiet.

He really did do it, though. Extremely unlikely that it was anyone else but him.

    My uncle was.

He did 6 or 7 years in England before we got him transferred back to the Joy.

He got out and went back to Scotland. We think he is on the beer pretty bad now. Bit of a downer answer but thats what happened to the average man on the street.

Take PCP, throw a chair through a window to f*ck up the Nazi who tried to rape me and give him a mad scar. Then catch him in the gym later, kick him in the balls, bate him with a weight, tie him up, put a weight bench over him, take a **** on his face, rub it all in while screaming 'SIEG HEIL MOTHERF*CKER.'

People will probably stay away from you then.

I remember in an episode of lock up there was a member of the mexican mafia in for jail for murder but he hadnt been convicted yet. Before his trial he killed another inmate. At his trial he was found not guilty. What a knob.
