Three months after Sky's main soccer pundit, Andy Gray, was fired by the broadcaster the former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has been confirmed as a replacement.

The 36-year-old, who hung up his boots earlier in the season, will share lead analyst duties with his former on-field adversary Jamie Redknapp.

Will be good to have an analyst who doesn't offer bland platitudes.

Don't really care what team/s they played for as long as they can give good, balanced insight.

He might start off like that but he'll end being a company man through and through or he wont last.

Hope its true, he has been excellent when used on MUTV and won't be afraid to say what he thinks. Delighted for him. Can't wait to see the first Liverpool game he does.

    What are you on about?

    He's a legend.

I'm really looking forward to this. Neville seems a decent buzzer who will at least add to the blandness of the shíte Sky punditry.

Delighted for Gary, he'll be a popular choice. Any truth in the rumour that Paddy Crerand is to be his sidekick?

    Beat me to it.

That aside i've watched him commentate on some of the reserve/youth games on MUTV and he's better than decent. Frank analysis and speaks his mind.

Is it confirmed he's getting Gray's job? I would have guessed he'd be straight into soccer saturday with unbelievable Jeff and the lads

Sky Sports managing director Barney Francis added: "Gary will bring vast experience at the top level of domestic and European football from nearly two decades with Manchester United.

"He will give our viewers great insight when he joins our team next season working on Barclays Premier League, UEFA Champions League and Carling Cup football."
Will be a major pundit so.

    Nevilles voice is annoying.

Not as annoying as Grays mind, but at least he was enthusiastic.

I have these horrible visions of listening to him bleat on his monotonic man-child voice all game...

They said he will be co-commentating + pundit so one would assume he is replacing Gray.

Awful choice but in fairness who watches Sky for the analysis anyways. Just watch the matches.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,705 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

I think if people actually give him a chance, they will be happy with him.

I have listened to him a good few times on MUTV and the guy clearly knows his football - has shown himself to be a very capable colour commentator. Granted, this was on United Youth games so it isn't too surprising that he knows the United young lads well, but he has shown a good knowledge of opposition players too.

He will know the premiership players he will be commentating very well.

In the youth games he has also shown that he is willing to criticise and praise both teams - and has also actually pointed things out in terms of play pattern that you want to see pundits commentate on.

Of course people will just figure it is Gary Neville and hate him regardless, but I honestly do think he will prove himself very capable to those who give him an actual chance.

Neville will surprise plenty of people.I have heard him on MUTV a few times and he is very good.I was expecting him to be very biased but he will critise the united teams and thats on the clubs channel.

The chap was w@nker on the pitch and most likely a w@nker off it and if he transfers that w@nkerism onto the telly then.....................

I really hope Sky dosnt change him, but if he does give his honest opinion about things I cant see him being employed too long :) maybe Rte should give him a call when he gets the boot, Himself Eamo and Souness on one panel!

Betting neither of you have actually watched Nev in an analytical role?? the man is good but hey, dont take the time to inform yourself

Can they make him hide behind something or wear a mask at least?

One of the reasons I got Sky Sports taken out, was I just got sick to death of Gray. I think it's time to get it back in, now that I know his replacements.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 25,953 ✭✭✭✭kryogen

I havent heard anyone from Sky saying he is Grays replacement? why is that being insinuated here??

Shame he didnt stay on and try the coaching for a bit actually, maybe he could have combined the two roles as ithers do.....but I wish him well

To be fair, he's a very good pundit/co-commentator but his voice can get very annoying.

News like this makes me glad that I don't subscribe to Sky.
