Not really a bargain alert but if you have a standard Sky box and are thinking of leaving them, they will offer you a discount on your bill or a free upgrade to Sky+.

I rang them at lunchtime there looking for any special offers, after only being with them since December, and I got Movies and Sports free for 2 months!
That'll cover the golf, the Heineken Cup, and the title run-in.

Definitely worth a call on 0818-719819, and I think it's option 3 and then 3 again.

We have bog standard Sky+ (and a a normal sky box - multiroom). Has anyone had any success in getting them to send out a Sky HD box for free?

we got a hd box a few weeks back from them but we only had the basic sky with them to start with not the sky+

Did you have to take up a HD subscription?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,014 ✭✭✭Soarer

There's no such thing as a "standard" Sky+ box anymore.
All their boxes are Sky+ HD boxes, and it just depends on whether the customer subscribes to HD or not.

I've just been on to them and they say that they cannot offer anything free. I threatened to leave, I asked to talk to a manager ... no joy ... they will offer 1/2 price sport/movies for 2 months but definitely not anything free. I even told them that a "colleague" in work got free movies and sports as per OP ... they said he must have misunderstood, and asked me to get him to call them again so they could clarify there are no free offers.

    :confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

    I'd try ring again.

I rang last night, and the guy said the only thing he could do was give me Sky Sports for one month for €20, but he'd put through the cancellation request at the same time so I'd not get charged for a second month. This guy was in Cork.

Rang again today, and "Matt" said he could give me Sports and Movies free for 2 months, up to June 8th, and also told me to ring to cancel on May 8th so I wouldn't get charged for another month. He was definitely in the UK.
I reckon you'd get better offers from the UK side, as they've way more competition over there, and are used to trying to keep customers.

It really does depend on who you talk to.

Just gave Sky a ring and they said there's an offer starting on Monday for existing customers - free Sky HD box, €30 for the installation (though that may refer to moving our sky+ box upstairs where a new cable is needed) and €7.50 extra p/m for 12 months for HD.

No amount of moaning could get him to throw anything more in.:)

do they transfer across the programs you have from one box to the other?

    Yes ,very true.
The Cork office are as tight as a ducks arse and not very accommodating.
Any time I've had any decent offers its been from the Uk ,but I find it almost impossible to get through to them these days.

No ... but you get to keep the old box apparently. The only way to get recorded programs off the old box is to use a DVD recorder. I'm not sure if the DVD recorder on a typical laptop would work ... I dont see why not if you have the correct cables.

I contacted Sky yesterday as an existing customer and ordered an upgrade to HD but for €15 per month.
I contacted again when you posted this and they say this offer will be for new customers only? Will have to wait till Monday for the offical announcement I suppose.

No, definitely not. Our conversation was based around moving one sky+ box and keeping hold of the spare box just in case. He was very clear that it was €7.50 p/m for 12 months. I'd go back to them on Monday and argue it out if not, I certainly will be.

I have recently been on to sky to get a replacement Sky+ box as mine keeps freezing out and wiping the memory. He told me that they only have regular boxes for multiroom and HD boxes for the main one. So he could only upgrade me to HD for 12.50 a month even though I still have a big heavy tube telly in my Livingroom and I'd be paying for a HD service I couldnt use?? That was the only way he could help me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86 ✭✭Tinalouise

I was also on to them recently to upgade my mothers Sky and they said everyone who has an old sky box can get a sky+ box for free, just pay the installation fee....
I was on to them myself this eve to get Sky Sports 1. People in Cork were charging me E19 per month. When I rang back to sign up for it I got through to England and he said it was E17 per month

That offer has been running for the past 2 weeks. I'm an existing customer. I called Sky on 25th March and asked any offers for HD. He gave me the one you said. I got it installed yesterday as last week did not suit me. The engineer even replaced the dish as the other one was worse for wear. Anyone thinking of getting HD. I recommend getting it. The picture quality is amazing. I also used a HD splitter to run the signal to another TV. No way I was paying for multiroom when I just need a feed in another room :D

A splitter? DOes that mean you have to watch the same thing on both T.V.s?

Went to cancel my subscription there 2 months ago as I was moving house. When asked why I wasn't staying with SKY I told them they couldn't compete with UPC and their packages. They've halved my subscription price for the next 12 months, saving about 30 euro a month :)

    Hey guys

Quick question, I am with sky over 1 year, I have a normal sky box and wish to get a sky plus box. The want me to pay 90 euro for the sky plus box and 60 euro installation. Anyway around this

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 683 ✭✭✭Gosh

Sky are a joke, I've been having signal problems for over 3 months now on an HD box, fitted new LNB and have 2 FreeSat boxes running off dish as well with no problems. HD box always dropping signal 2 after going into standby. Phoned Sky last night to ask about getting a new HD box - been a customer for over 10 years - was first told it would cost £259, asked how much in euro, she went off to find out and came back saying €99 but I could also buy through local electrical retailer, said yes to the €99, she started order process and then asked me to hold - 5 minutes - then came back and said it would cost €249 plus an installer would have to come out. Asked her how it had gone from €99 euro to €249 in space of 5 minutes and was told that's what her system was now showing. Told her to forget it, what a farce.

Ring up again and go through to their cancellations department. Tell them that you just rang to get upgraded to Sky+, and tell them the price you were quoted. Then tell them that you don't think it's fair that a new customer can get the same thing for free, so you're gonna cancel and rejoin as a new customer under your partner's name.

Ring cancellations, tell them all the above, and tell them that after being a customer for 10 years and getting treated like this, you're gonna cancel and go to UPC.

    hey all
been with sky since '08, sky+ box starting to freeze and was looking to replace it,rang "adding a product or package" last night was told €159 to just get hd box or €30 plus €15 per month to get channels aswell. Tried cancellations today was told i could get new box for €29 plus €15 for installation without channels

Just did that (option 3 then 5 - thinking of leaving us) - spoke to a nice girl from Cork - came back and offered me a new HD box for €29 plus €10 for installation. Last night went through reporting a fault - they seem to have no interest in retaining customers. Have to commit to 12 month contract to get the new box for €39 but well worth talking to them in Cork. :)

I called sky recently, went through the cancellation department. was offered (and accepted : ) a free upgrade including free installation from my ten year old digibox to a spanking new 250 GB Sky Plus HD box.

Engineer didnt turn up on date of install, subseqent call to sky resulted in being told, 'sorry about that, but nothing we can do, means your install still stands but will have to be put back to the end of the install queue again, meaning another two week wait!!'
Long story short - number of calls followed to sky to complain - no move on the install date - had to wait another two weeks but i did manage to get next six months sky sub at half price as compo and obviously agree to a 12 month contract - their customer service department are a total mess tbh, especially if you have a problem (they don't want to know, and will even blatantly lie to you) - but if you have the time and can make a few calls and put up with their bullsh*t and pray nothing goes wrong - all things going well you will have a nice deal for yourself.

Going to ring them on Monday and chance my arm in getting a HD sky+ box, I've been with them 8 years and the current box is on its last legs. Fingers crossed.

Does she have a phone line?

Yes but don't get me started on her and the phoneline

She don't want connected to the phone line as sky and phone are on different sides of the room.

So when he comes to install she will refuse point blank to connecting the box to sky

She will allow him do the call back off the box but not a permanent set up.

When i got sky installed i allowed them connect the box but i have mobiles barred from the phone.

As soon as you press 0-8 phone gos beep beep

Installer rang sky told them the problem.Sky wanted 60 euro i think it was.

I said not a hope take it away pack it up and go.

    They waived the charge:D

Does it really mean a difference when watching a Movie or a Soccer Match??? Is the money worth paying ???

It makes a noticeable difference to movies, especially animated.
But in sports, the difference between SD and HD is incredible. And it's not just picture quality either. The step up in audio is noticeable too.

If you're iffy, you could always buy a SkyHD box privately (there's a fella in Cork selling them for €60 new!), and hook it up FTA. That way you'll get all the UK channels, including BBCHD, BBC1 HD, and ITVHD. BBC1 and ITV are simulcasts, so you can change between the HD and SD versions of the same program to compare.

I'll put it another way, when I'm watching telly, I only search the HD channels to see what's on!

They advise to ring back to tomorrow.

Or ring 0818 719 819, and (hopefully) get through to the UK call centre who should be able to help you out.

P.S. No news on those boxes yet guys and gals. Will let ye know as soon as I know.

Also, does anyone know if the HD boxes come with a HDMI cable or do you source your own?
