A few times now I've been in Pharmacist and have come close to asking about the Alli capsules. I wonder if anyone has tried them, or knows anyone that has tried them. I'm with Weight Watchers anyway so potentially they might work... but I need advice first

hi rememberthis, discussion about these products is generally against the Charter but I'll keep this open on the proviso that no information about how to actually take the pills is given.

Allí is a milder form of the Xenical drug. Now I haven't taken either of these products and wouldn't, if for no other reason than one of the most commonly reported side-effects is anal leakage.

    Seriously :o

the drug stops your body from absorbing fat, so when you eat it it'll have nowhere to go but straight out.

the makers advocate eating a very low fat diet with the product but that's impractical and unhealthy - fat isn't something to be avoided, it's just something that needs to be eaten in moderation as with everything else in your diet.

If you're following a healthy eating plan and exercising well Alli won't really give you any major advantages - I know it's frustrating when you reach plateaus but there are other, healthier ways to try and get over those hurdles :)

There is a great you tube video of a lady in a swimming pool - showing the Alli effect..

I would search for it, but YouTube is blocked in work :)

But as the previous poster said, it basically stops your body absorbing fat you eat. Alli is a lighter version of Xenical [which can only be prescribed by Doctor]. I read somewhere that its half the strength of Xenical [but take that with pinch of salt, no idea of actual facts].

I was on Xenical very briefly, a while before I sorted myself out and lost my weight [and also had a sister on it for a while], but it did nothing except ruin a couple of pairs of trousers. It maybe contributed to some very short term weight loss.

If someone is very overweight and thinks they need this product, you need to change your diet and start getting regular exercise, a "magic pill" wont help long term..

Think of it his way, if a magic weight loss pill existed, obesity would cease to exist.

I laughed at the anal leakage comment. :D

Thanks for the advice. There has been always something stopping me from getting it, glad I didn't waste my money now. But yes, I agree, need to start getting my head around food long term instead of diet pills.

Its definitely true about the anal leakage. A friend of mine was going out with a guy who was taking ali and he used to wear a santary towel.......seriously, it didnt last long between them!!

I was taking these tabs for a couple of weeks, and I had to stop. I did lose some weight though so I think they do work. you have no problems if you stay within the recommended fat intake, but if you go over..................just no, its pretty awful:o

rofl - how do you bring that up on the 2nd or 3rd date...

My sister was on these. She said she will never forget the time she ate a Chinese takeaway while taking them. She had the most awful hour of her life, and totally blocked the toilet in her house.

She's not on them any longer.

The main benefit of them really is that they punish you if you don't stick to a low fat diet. As many people will tell you, this doesn't guarantee any sort of weight loss, since the tendency is to replace high fat food with high sugar food.

In placebo controlled double blind studies, people taking Xenical (the double strength form of Alli) lost 6lb a year more than people taking the placebo. That is enough to be statistically significant, but it's not much for a year's worth of dieting and drugs. Logically, you'd expect that taking Alli for a year should result in a 3lb weight loss more than diet alone.

And there is still that anal slippage effect....

The Alli website recommends wearing dark trousers and carrying spare underwear. No joke.

Oh, bear in mind, they block all fats, so you are going to have to make a conscious effort to take fish oil and fat soluble vitamins at a time when you have not take Alli.

tried xenical and have no real ill effects apart from headaches so i had to stop them, anal leakage only occurs if you eat something over fatty. i'd stick with ww and not bother! keep your money:D

She was with him about 4 months when he started it and he was very open about it really as he thought it was great that he had lost 15lbs in 2.5weeks and then just mentioned the minor side effect and how he works around it

My sister in law used to work in a pharmacy and if anyone bought Alli tablets, they had to advise the customer to wear dark clothes when taking them!! :D
