Is the route around castleown grounds?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,071 ✭✭✭Jnealon

This is billed as a road race on the Celbridge AC site.
The Liz McDonnell run which would be a few weeks later is on the Castletown grounds

What is the "Liz McDonnell run". Is this organised by another club?

Just to clarify. The Celbridge Athletic 5km is a road race, starting and finishing in Castletown House. The route will be a open ended loop (sort of a giant horse shoe).
I will post up a Garmin trace of the route when I get a chance.
(route will be officially certified under the AAI permit rules)

The Liz McDonnell Memorial Run is a cross country event held in entirely within the grounds of Castletown House and is not affiliated with the Celbridge Athletic 5km Event.
Info on this can be found here: http://www.lizmcdonnellrun.com/

Just giving this a bit of a bump. Race is coming up soon.

Just a reminder, this is the first year we have put on a race and we are looking to raise some good funds for the club.

Here is a Garmin of the route (the Garmin is in reverse, the race goes the other way round). As you can see, its very flat, so a good PB potential.

Hope to see some of you there.

    Definitely looks flat!

This looks like it's going to be a super race. Ran that loop before and it is defo one to get a PB on.
Great price too if they are doing chip timing and a tech top as well. Well done Celbridge and hope it turns out to be as good a race as I think it could be.

Looks good, will hopefully slot this in.

Should be very fast, small sharp incline up to the interchange roundabout from the castletown exit and then a gradual downhill all the way back to the gates of castletown. Pan flat from here to the end.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 258 ✭✭MaroonTam

    Good to see some interest.

We set the course to have a decent straight at the start, hopefully to allow the feild to string out a bit, as there is a reasonably sharp left hander at the exit of Castletown grounds.

Good smooth surface round the top half of the course, turns into a nice little dip coming down into Celbridge village then a final tricky little left back into Castletown again.

From there an eyeballs-out flat 1km straight to the finish. :D

Really expecting some good times to be posted on this route, and the winner is guaranteed to hold the course record ;)

In that case, you may well be interested in the Fit4Life group that we have at Celbridge Athletics (shamless plug). They meet at 7pm on a Wednesday night at the Celbridge track.
We are encouraging all of the Fit4Life group to take part on the 14th (most of our senior athletes will be roped in to marshalling duties on the day)

I hope the weather has been booked too. Cold and damp will do nicely!

Anyone know will this have distance markers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15 j23c

According to someone i was talking to from Celbridge AC, they had someone out to officially mark the course last week. I posed the question of km markers and he said there is KM markers and 800m/400m to go markers too. They seem to be really pushing out the boat for their first running of a road race. Great to see.

j23c, you are right. The course measuring has been done. Markers will be each KM, 800 & 400 to go.

We really are trying to make the first running of this race as smooth and successful as possible. We want this to be as an enjoyable event for all those taking part and for this to become a long term fixture on the calendar.

On that, we would appreciate any feedback from anyone, both on the day and after the event.

Looking forward to this race despite having no speed work done.

I would recommend this as a very good course, especially the fast finish - straight 1k along a tree lined avenue towards Castletown.

Aside from the course, the club organising it provide excellent facilities especially for underage, so I would imagine any funds raised will be put to very good use.

I have no connection with the club except for speaking with some parents whose kids are involved.

    Just seeing these posts now.

Is this the same route as The Liz McDonnell (XC) in the Castletown grounds? The Liz McDonald one is held every year by the Celbridge AC.

Bad timing though - Sunday 14th - as the Martin Earley Tour of Kildare 100km sportive is also on morning of 14th. It's starting from Naas and going through Celbridge. Maybe I could hop off bike in Celbridge to do the 5km XC route then join the cycling group later?! (Joking)

Honestly though what time is this race starting? Should be back from Tour of Kildare about 1.30pm. Is it a morning/afternoon race?

    Thanks

Does anyone know the map of this race?

    Thx

Not, worked out how the multi quote thingy works, so will just answer each question.

Route is not the same as the Liz McDonald (see post #5 )

Garmin of the route is on post #7 but here it is again http://connect.garmin.com/activity/96716695 (note: this is the reverse of the route)

Online registration is open until Saturday. Chips collected on the day (I am not 100% on the process for this)

    Race is off at 11am

    Hi MaroonTam,

Is there parking on the grounds or will we be looking for on street parking?

Are they closing the roads at a particular time or will they be rolling closures?

    Thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 258 ✭✭MaroonTam

Yes, there is some parking in Castletown House (not loads now), If you come in from the Hewlard Packard / N4 end.

It will be rolling road closures for the duration of the race. (we have enough Gardai in the club :D)

So my understanding is, DO NOT drive to Celbridge Village.
Are you closing the road in (run out) at particular time?

Obviously Le Chéile Crew all running over;).

'The house is located 20km from Dublin off the M4 Sligo Road, from the M4 take the R449 Celbridge West/Leixlip West Exit 6, stay in the left hand lane and before the top of this sliproad there is a third lane on the left, go into this lane and then after approximately 100 meters you will see the Castletown Estate gates on the right.

Please note that cars/ buses access is from the above entrance as the avenue from Celbridge is for pedestrian/bicycle access only.'

Best bet coming from town / M50 is to come along the N4, keep going until it turns into the M4 just past Leixlip and proceed to junction 2a Clebridge Interchange (its the first slip road after the road turns into motorway)

Off the slip road there is a releif slipway on the left hand side, take this heading towards HP. The entrance to Castletown is then on the right hand side.

There would be limited parking at the Celbridge village side of Castletown. And the avenue up to the house from that side is closed to traffic.
The start is nearer to the HP end anyway (with the finish directly in front of the house)
