Fowler was training with the Liverpool reserves today. Apparently hes joining up with MK Dons on a coaching basis. Good to see him back in England. Any chance of him playing?
    http://www.newsandstar.co.uk/carlisle-united/latest/mk-dons-call-in-ex-liverpool-star-robbie-fowler-to-help-prepare-for-carlisle-utd-game-1.825616?referrerPath=home
The former Liverpool and England striker has been coaching Karl Robinson’s strikers this week ahead of their clash with the Blues.

Fowler is a close friend of the Dons’ rookie manager and passed on his finishing expertise to their frontmen in a one-off session on Tuesday.

The 35-year-old Anfield icon, who has just returned to England after completing a season in Australia with Perth Glory, is helping out Robinson on an occasional basis – and the stadium:mk boss has called on his services to prepare the promotion-chasing Dons for Saturday’s visit of Greg Abbott’s United.

Fowler has not registered to play for the fifth-placed League One side but Robinson – who knows Fowler from his time as an academy coach at Liverpool – is delighted to have him on board.

“Robbie is a wonderful man and an unbelievable talent – one of the best we’ve seen in this country,” said Robinson.

“It’s well documented that he’s a good friend of mine. He wants to go down the coaching path at some stage in his career and he wants to keep playing as well.”

Strikers Sam Baldock, Rowan Vine, Jabo Ibehre, Keanu Marsh-Brown and Daniel Powell were among the Dons aces to benefit from Fowler’s goalscoring know-how as the Dons seek the victory that will boost their promotion bid.

Fowler hasn't officially left Perth Glory yet. He has been offered a new one year deal to stay at the club, albeit at lower wages.

Nothing will be confirmed until the middle of the month which is the deadline set by Glory for a decision.

He won 5 trophies in 1 season while captaining the club. One of the PL highest goalscorers of all time.

At least he had the bottle to play for his country too, unlike Giggs.

Carling Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Cup, in 1 season, then 2 worthless ones the season after.

Yet again, why bring Ryan Giggs into a thread about Robbie Fowler?

26 games 7 goals. I meant the fact he chose to play for England, who had many many good good strikers at the time. Giggs could have played for England when Barnes was finishing up and needed a left winger and chose not to.

FA cup, UEFA cup, League Cup, Charity shield, European Super Cup.

and why are you basing the comparison in terms of trophies won and not actually on how they play? Bit ridiculous.

EDIT: Barnsey was not finsihing up, my bad. But he could have challenged for that spot as Barnes was very versatile.

stop talking about Giggs or this gets closed and people will be infracted and banned as a consequence.

i thought this forum had maybe got past this sort of shít of Liverpool/Utd fans hijacking threads for absolutely no reason.

God is his nickname, get over it.

Do you really think he wouldnt have got more than 26 caps if he wasnt so badly affected by injuries? And the fact he had Shearer and Sheringham to compete with didnt help either.

Ill ask again, why mention Ryan Giggs in a Robbie Fowler thread? Although while you're here, is John o'Shea a better player than C Ronaldo? Afterall he has won more trophies than Ronaldo.

What do you reckon will happen? Will he stay in Oz or come back to England. Hed be big boost for Dons even if he werent to play.

Giggs played for Wales until he was 33 playing 64 games.

Robbie is 35 and hasn't played for England for nearly 10 years.

Isen't Didi a coach there? or he was, so there is some link.

robbie fowler was so overated. the guy is 35, if he was meant to be such a goalscorer he could still be with liverpool now like inzaghi or be like jari litmanen.

he was the best finisher i had ever seen in about 1996 but reminds me of U2 -had one amazing period when they were by far in a different league to rivals, but chose to live on past glories ever since.

He deserved more than his haul of medals to be fair for the talent he had.

Its not much for someone with the ability he showed as a youngster. People talk about 5 trophies but its really only the FA cup and the UEFA cup that have any real worth. At least Gerard has a CL win to show for his career. He would have fitted in nicely back in the day when Rush went to Italy and Aldridge was bought except he was probably 12 :)

    League Cup (2): 1995, 2001
    FA Cup (1): 2001
    UEFA Cup (1): 2001
    UEFA Super Cup (1): 2001

Scored some amazing goals at some rate. Seem to remember one lob of Schmeichel that he made look effortless.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 10,259 ✭✭✭✭Melion

How can people give out about him? When he was with Liverpool he was arguably one of the best strikers in Europe, id have in in the Top 5 strikers to ever play in the premiership. He got injuries, they happen, and they ruin careers. Houlliers persistence in playing Emile Heskey certainly didnt help Robbie. The way he was treated by Houllier and Thompson was disgraceful.

I wonder how long it will take for someone to mention what a smackhead he is/was

One of the best natural finishers the Premier League has ever seen. Possibly the best, but here's not the place for that debate.

He is joining up with Bury to do the same thing next week (http://www.buryfc.co.uk/page/LatestNews/0,,10422~2333258,00.html), seems like he will be sharing his talents with a few of the Football League teams. Good chance for both him to get coaching experience, and for the teams strikers to learn from one of the best.

Anyways if you had a choice of winning medals when you barely played a game to deserve them ( so many in the league, the likes of Kleberson for Brazil, arguably Mach this year in Barca ) or being idolised by many many fans for what you did for them while you played there, what would you pick?

I know I would definitely pick being idolised.

Imagine telling your grandkids that you have all these medals, they ask to see footage, 'oh wait I can't, I was on the bench'

Or showing your grankids of 40,000 people singing your name.

Fowler's name will always be mentioned as one of the greats of Liverpool FC.

Exactly, in 20 years time id much rather be Robbie Fowler than John O'Shea or someone like him.

Of course having a bank balance like Robbie wouldnt be too bad either.

So did Robbie, while he could.

Just look at Michael Owen to see how injuries ruin potential. He genuinely could have been one of the greats and would be Englands record goal scorer by a long way.

Or what about Djimi Traore, he has a Champions League winners medal. Would you rather be him or Robbie Fowler in a few years time?

Fowler's Premier League hat trick in 4 minutes and 32 seconds which includes restarts against Arsenal will never be broken.
Liverpool's best striker along with Rush and Hunt, he was unlucky never to achieve more on the international scene. When Fowler came onto the scene he had a golden age of English strikers above him like Shearer, Sheringham, Wright, Cole, Ferdinand all in their prime and scoring goals.
Whereas when the less gifted Michael Owen for example came along 4 years later all apart from Shearer were over the hill and Fowler suffered a horrific knee injury vacating a place in the Liverpool team and in the England team for the 98 World Cup.
Fowler is rightly reveered by Liverpool fans because he is a genius, when Benitez signed him in 2006 the ovation he got was unbelievable and befitting of the man they call God.

For those of you with a Red Heart, REJOICE! For we have seen God

    Haters gonna hate.jpg

Fowler suffered a serious knee ligament injury during the 97-98 season and was never the same player thereafter. He was 22.

Before the injury Fowler was one of the best strikers in Europe. After the injury he became a canny goal poacher who compensated for reduced athleticism with positional nous.

Before the injury he managed 129 goals in 216 games in all competitions. Pretty divine if you're asking me.

If he is around, could he not sign up and sit on the bench. If he was there, it might mean N'Gog stays off and Robbie in his place can't do any worse even at 35.

A goal down in a game, who u rather see come off the bench...? Be worth a shot by Kenny. But not sure if he is still under contract in Aus?

Ridiculous stuff going on in this thread.

If you don't recognise Robbie Fowler as one of the best strikers to have ever played in the Premiership, you're either 12 and never saw him at his peak, or you're ridiculously bitter!

    And I can't stand Liverpool!
