Reading some logs there seems to be a fair few people looking to lose either a few or a lot of lbs.

The guys over in the Fitness Forum do this regularaly see HERE and lots on here are always talking about it, even if it were just to be used as a motivator to clean up and fine tune your diet and training in time for all the summer races. If it was to be similar to the fitness forums one, it's not all about weight loss, they also do weight gain, muscle gain, dropping the bf% etc...

Rules 3 and 4 might be a little to harsh for a few people on this forum though. :pac:

Ah come on, I just dropped from 10 stone 11 to 10 stone 6 with my bf% at ~10% for the first time since pneumonia a few years ago and NOW you want to introduce that new challenge?

Maybe when I'm preparing for my next marathon! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,196 ✭✭✭PaulieC

I agree (it may surprise you) I've lost 16lbs since Christmas, now is the hard part...
    I don't have a bf though :-)

If it was to be an 8 week challenge ending just on time for the Cork marathon it would start on Monday/this weekend. That would of course mean it runs through Easter though.

Just checked out the rules...wow, they're strict. I think I'll just plough my own furrow and cheer y'all on from the sidelines

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,635 ✭✭✭token56

Sign me up for this, I've put on a good bit of weight since I haven't been able to run again and need to shed it. I can start back running again too next week so it all fits perfectly for me.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,144 ✭✭✭Bally8

Eek just read the rules- no way I could do all that. I wouldnt mind a weight loss table like we had at some stage last year though.

(she says while eating crisps and chocolate for lunch:D)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,451 ✭✭✭spaceylou

hmmmmm - if I can swap some of the alcohol units for chocolate I could do it....but me minus chocolate is just not nice for the people left in my wake.

How strict are we gonna be on the rules? Although I just reread the rule about no junk and there is a splurg day every 2 weeks allowed...which we could all use to coincide with easter....

yeah, I think its a good idea, we could start from Monday (lets start from Monday hint hint), eight weeks to CCM

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 20,366 Mod ✭✭✭✭RacoonQueen

Don't have to be as strict as the fitness forum guys are. That thread can be a guideline just to the sort of thing we could bring in here. Though, as gem puts it, it's only 8 weeks of your life - get over it! :pac:

End of the day, if you want to make the change you will. This thread/challenge will act as a motivator. If everyone is watching you and expecting you to check in at the end of each week and post successful results, you'll be more likely to put the bar of choc back on the shelf in the shop and pick up an apple instead. Your success will motivate others to adopt your techniques.

Can mess around with the rules a bit to make it a little less harsh, but I suppose the reason for the success on the fitness forum is the fact that it is strict. You don't want to be miserable either though...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,274 ✭✭✭Munster_Gal

I almost agreed to this then read it in more detail
The no junk food rule would really get to me... I know it's only 8 weeks but.......

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,197 ✭✭✭elvis jones

I think we need to do out our own rules.

If i do a race and do well i want a reward. For me its an Indian, its a once off and come the next day i'll be in the pool or out on the bike.

I think we go with agreed guidelines and not rules as your only doing harm to yourself and your race preperation if you don't do the below.

    1. eat healthy - take the healthy option when possible
    2. keep well hydrated
    3. keep a food diary and read labels on food to see what in your food.
    2. exercise and prepare properly for your race
    3. Limited booze, junk food and caffine
    4. don't starve yourself the day of/before a weigh in
    5. Measure your body as you can stay the same on the scales but can loose inches
    6. Weigh yourself at the same day and time each week were possible as your weight can change a lot during the day.
    7. Your only in competition with yourself so jut because someone loses 2 pounds more than you don't get down over it.
    8. Never mind "no pain no gain".......i rather "no effort to gain"
    9. Share youe experiences, good and bad. They can help others and we can help you.

Any problems with the above, remember we are trying to get fit and NOT JUST get weight off. If your reason for exercise is weight loss you will quit quicker BUT if your building to a goal of mini marathon, half, full or a triathlon the weight loss will be an added bonus of crossing the finish line with a smile knowing you have done all you can to perform at your best through diet, lifestyle choices and proper training.

So thoughts ? If we want to start on monday we need to get an agreement !!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,194 ✭✭✭osnola ibax

I like the sounds of the above but I also like the idea of some specific rules like

Junk food once a week only
Prescribed no of alcohol units, maybe gender specific
    5 a day?
    No. Sessions per week ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,197 ✭✭✭elvis jones

Yeah good do you have to do a specific number of sessions in a week or post your number of sessions.

As on a race week i personally would taper and might only do 3 sessions compared to my normal 8.

On the booze, sounds good !

I think the 5 of day is in the eating healthy bit or is that a bit vague !

I generally run 4 times a week, maybe that could be a minimum.

I think 10 units of alcohol a week is fair. (by the way - what is a unit 1/2 pint??)

Yeah eating healthy sounds good but if we could define that in some way as in 5 a day, or no biscuits or chocs on weekdays or a calorie count or something agreed.

And of course tapering is different, though maybe other rules could be established around a taper week like 0 booze, 0 junk food, 0 sex ;)

I use an app on my phone to count my intake vs my needs for training and it is really working.

But there are also online tools you use as well.

Good work EJ, I was going to rejig the rules tonight but that looks good. Obviously runners and triathletes aren't as disciplined as people in the fitness forum. :pac: Endurance athletes need their sugar!

Obviously the main sort of exercise people on here will be doing is running and theres a range of abilities so some people would run 3 times a week while someone training for tri is probably doing 7 days with double days in there too. I would suggest some core work/cross training days to people only doing running though 'cos I love my strength and conditioning. :)

I've linked directly to g'ems posts from the original boards body super challenge thread and re-uploaded her measurements document and I desperately hope she doesn't mind us robbing everything without asking her. :pac:

There's more stuff in g'ems original thread about planning your exercise and efficient exercise if you want to go back to it, I have linked to it in my original post. I didn't think there was much point adding them in here as everyone already has their own training plan I'm sure.

    How to Prepare
    Measurement Guidelines
    Diet I
    Diet II
    Diet III

All credit for this goes to g'em, she put together some great stuff for the fitness forums version of this, there is no point in anyone else trying to put together anything new as hers will probably still be better anyway.

You may want to reference the Fitness:The Basics (Incl Diet and Nutrition) thread aswell as it's another great thread put together by the fitness forum guys. Transform has some good videos on that thread too which might have people more inclined to follow the no junk food rule. :D

Good work guys, I'm going to go through the links and rules later. I'll definitely be hoping to go cold turkey on junk food and sweets though.

Can I join? I know I'm not a regular poster here... I've been trying to get myself remotivated to run again for months now but haven't seemed to have the push in me. This sounds like exactly what I need.

    I'll join too

Not a regular poster in here but I read a lot.

Used to run regularly, 10k runs a few days a week, fastest around 41 mins which was somewhat decent and did longer 10 mile runs at weekends and the odd half marathon. And sprints on the GAA pitch

Not lately, quite a few stone heavier and out of breath running for the bus :o:o:o
Any fitness I had is long gone

So need a kick in the ass! :D

I haven't really read through this all but the title got my attention. I'm currently hovering around the 17 stone mark and I want to get down to a maximum of 12 stone.

If only I could make myself stick to a healthy eating thing!

If you want to get fit your body needs fuel and to perform at your best you have to put in the best food possible.........your not eating healthy to lose weight, your doing it for your performance and training. The weight loss will be an added bonus.

Just remember for every exta 10 pounds weight you carry you will use 6.5% more energy to do the same workout. So get the weight down and your core temp will drop, heart rate will drop, breathing rate will drop and your workout will be easier and you will get faster...........boasting performance:)

I propose on monday morning we start a new thread with the links and guidelines above and if someone does a perhaps a table with week 1 etc, starting weight, starting measurments and an 8 week exercise goal.

Each week all of us will do a report which will include how our week went, weight, measurements, diet ( good and bad ) and exericse log for the week.

I like thinking about it that way, plus it breaks it down into more manageable chunks. Rather than thinking about needing to lose 5 stone or whatever, just think about losing 10 lbs first.

Ya but put the focus on the exercise and diet rather than the scales. Remember muscle weighs more than fat so you could put on 2 pounds but lose 3 inches in a week !!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,197 ✭✭✭elvis jones

Ok if we are all agreed i'll put up a new thread in the morning at about half 9.

Anyone mind a weekly update on a tuesday as with a few bank holidays in there we could forget.

I'll post all the guidelines and what we need you to do weekly for the next 8 weeks.

But the most important thing is that we are looking to gain fitness and weight loss will be an added gain unlike on the other forum where weight loss is the only result.

There is no point doing anything for the next 8 weeks that you can't see yourself doing in 6 months or a years time. As in eat healthy, reduce junk food, don't live by the scales, keep up your exercise goals.

Anyway, the 1st weight in/update will be tuesday week the 19th and anyone can join in. We need to encourage each other and help in good and bad times for the next 8 weeks and well beyond. So roll on tomorrow and a step towards a fitter you and me:)
