Sinn Féin councillor drives van with suspect bomb to safety

A Sinn Fein councillor risked his life last night to drive a suspected bomb from a busy garage forecourt just yards from where a group of children were playing football.

Magherafelt councillor Peter Bateson bravely acted when he was told by local people that there was a suspected pipe-bomb which was believed to be strapped to a work van in Toomebridge, last night.

The Sinn Fein man, who lives nearby, arrived at the scene at Blackpark Road before the PSNI and tried to move people away from the scene.

Dozens of children were playing football at a Sean O’Leary’s GAA field which is situated just yards from where the work van was parked.

The alert was raised after a local man noticed that a pipe bomb-like device was strapped to the windscreen wiper of his work vehicle.

It is understood the man had just driven the vehicle from the Markets area of Belfast to the Blackpark Road where he had stopped at a local garage.

It was only when the man had come out of an adjacent shop that he then noticed the suspected pipe bomb which was stuck to the window of the vehicle.

Mr Bateson said he had decided to move the van because of his concerns surrounding the safety of both the local children and residents of the area.

He said: “There were a lot of children and other people milling around the area so I decided the best thing I could do was get it out of the area.

“There is a football field nearby and there was maybe 40 or 50 children playing there.

“People were starting to gather and were curious.

“The van had been driven from Belfast so I reckoned another 500 yards would not make much of a difference.

“I then drove the van to a bit of waste ground close to a construction site just up the road,” he added.

“It seems that this device was attached in the Markets area rather than at the garage where the local man stopped.

“At this stage it is difficult to know what was behind it,” Mr Bateson added.

Fair play to this man, takes some balls to get into a van and drive it with a bomb strapped to it! What would you have done? kudos to Peter Bateson for taking the initiative to ensure the safety of those nearby.

Apparently there was a pile of stuff on the dashboard which is why the driver didn't see the bomb until he got out at the petrol station.

Of all the places to put the bomb? The wind shield wiper? Really?
Did they think he wouldn't notice?

Probably knew from experience that it wasn't a pipe bomb!

I wonder how many people will try and twist this in some way to have a go at SF?

    I have no doubts.

This is another attempt to publicise Sinn Fein,a rather poor and blatant Sinn Fein propaganda exercise.

I would treat it as such and ignore it.

Is it not pretty dangerous to go moving the bomb? What if by getting in the van and driving the van caused it to go off? He probably should have waited for the bomb squad.

I'm sure his intentions were good and fair play for what he thought was a selfless act, but it was the wrong thing to do imo.

The Contender with Jeff Bridges was an excellent film

A Governor secretly pays a women to crash a car into a lake. He dives in and attempts to rescue her and is hailed a hero

Just what I thought of reading this thread

I take it you didnt read the article then? The van was driven a distance first.

My agenda is to stop people from deliberately flaming. There was no need for the second comment that WT made. Nobody had said anything about SF or had a go at them so why mention it.

Well it had been driven a distance already, I assume he was afraid if he left it it may go off anyway.

No one was hurt thats the most important thing.

I'd like to apologize for my earlier joke.

Perhaps the thread should come with a mini-charter to outline the correct repsonse expected from posters.

Will striking a mawkish congratulatory tone suffice?

So word of mouth went quicker than the telephone call to the police, and he arrived there before the PSNI? Well done. I do have to laugh at the way that it seemed the SF councillor was told before the PSNI.

    =-=

Once the van was taken to the waste ground, was the bomb made safe by the PSNI/bomb disposal team? The article leaves that part out.

Something similar happened with a pipe bomb in Derry a few months back, I think a bus driver drove it somewhere out of the way. These yokes are highly unlikely to go off generally(and often hoaxes) but due to procedure you'd need to have the bombsquad called in and block the roads etc.

So fair play to him for bringing it to waste ground where it can be declared safe without causing mass disruption

I would certainly doubt anybody is fooled by your blatantly cynical anti-SF agenda. I would imagine most people will keep an open mind and be hopeful that it was exactly what it appears to be, a brave selfless (if somewhat misguided) act, while maintaining a healthy scepticism.

I challenge you to find any threads started by me which are anti Sinn Fein.

    You miss the whole point.

The act may be laudatory and well done to the councellor.

However it's the starting of yet another thread promoting Sinn Féin by the same poster which has me somewhat concerned.

I think he actually planted the bomb there in the first place, its all a ploy to show the Shinners are good people now and have nothing to do with the RA
