... I bet you take the short-cut home though;). I reckon you won't be doing much more than 110km in a single day

For me, it's 23.02km in (I've added a bit by using the Lusk by-pass), and typically between 24.78 and 36.47 going home (depending on whether I take the hill or not)

OP - you can't ask this sort of question without telling us how long your's is

    2.1 km to college.
I know I know... Impressive right?

Yep - short way home - although I've added a little lap just to make sure it comes in just over the psychologically important 50 km. Over the winter it was rarely over 110km in a day, but longer evenings and brighter mornings make it possible - but only if work stops getting in the way

North Cork, about 5 minutes in about 15 minutes back out. Getting used to the hills though.

The reason for asking is I live 30km from work. Thinking it is a bit too far for my ability. Another option is to cycle part of the way and get the bus the rest of the way. Thanks for all the replies.

Give it a go - just give yourself plenty of time to start off with. If there is somewhere secure to leave your bike at work, you could head in one day, catch the bus home, and then cycle home the following evening. You may surprise yourself at how quickly you can get "up to speed" on something like this

If Jawgap is the current leader on distance i may give him a run for his money come June when we move into our new offices and i'm thinking of cycling in 1/2 days a week - 120km round trip though

Will give it a go anyway but it wouldn't be a daily commute thats for sure

Work up to it - that's what I did. also you could cycle in one day, get the bus home that evening, then bus it the next morning and cycle that evening.

I meander a bit on my way in which explains the distance and it's not an every day affair - at the moment I'm doing it about 3 times per week, although looks like this week I'll be able to do it 4 days out of the 5.

16km each way and I'm not doing it half enough!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 573 ✭✭✭dave.obrien

15.76km each way, plus a 24km route home on Wednesday's when I go to work (I'm a student). Plus a 18.5km each way for work on Saturdays and Sundays, though with the Sundays, I try to get in either 50-90km before work or 25km mtb'ing.

27k each way - OP build it up by doing one day a week or cycle in one day, home the next.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,440 ✭✭✭cdaly_

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,313 ✭✭✭07Lapierre

97km round trip for me, I have only started to cycle it lately, once a week is my current goal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 806 ✭✭✭AssaultedPeanut

8.7km each way. I do it every day unless something comes up like a night out after work or if it's very windy:o

I used to be proud of my 7.9 k each way :P

... does doing it on a mountain bike count for extra? :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 183 ✭✭ClareVisitor

10 miles round trip 3 days per week (when I drop my son at nursery) and 9 miles the other two days. I obviously get the benefit of pushing him along too! :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 533 ✭✭✭StaggerLee

14-15km each way for me. Felt like 20 this morning in the wind. Its a struggle as I am still getting used to it, I'm new to cycling, and already have a criminal record as a result!

Commuting 2 days a week at the moment, going to up it to 3 or 4 from next week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,547 ✭✭✭funkyjebus

8k each way, but I slip a extra 30k in on the way home on tuesdays and thursdays now we have light!

My commute is just short of 30km each way and I do it on a fixie, usually do it 3-4 times a week.

Start off easy and only do it once or twice the first week and then when the stanima picks up increase the number of times you do it in a week. If you currently do no cycling the first time home will be a killer as both your legs and arse will not have recovered from the morning cycle. Once you get use to it and get fitter you wll enjoy it and if like me every cycle in/out is a race to beat my PB.

Around 1hr - best in was 58mins but I was on my road bike 1:04 on my fixie and best time home was yesterday @ 55 mins (only one red light from Citywest to Dalkey/Killiney) :)

24km in, 26km home. Or 21km each way if I'm pressed for time and need to use the most direct route.

The stretch in the evenings also provides you with an opportunity to build up your distance without having to jump straight into the full 30km. Take a 5km spin some evening or at the weekend; then do 10, 15, 20km. After that, you can be fairly confident that you won't collapse half way through your 30km commute. Go on, give it a lash!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 395 ✭✭Coronal

And there was me thinking that my 17 each way was good going :o

Some really impressive daily distances there, 110 in one day for a commute  I can manage that in a day at the weekend, but I wouldn't want to be working afterwards, nor thinking about doing it again the next day.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,056 ✭✭✭✭BostonB

To build up the distance. You can always cycle in one day, home the next. Getting a lift, or the bus in between.

No not every day - but more often than not. I aim for three days per week at this time of year, but a lot depends on what's going on in work.

As for the bike.......this is it here:)
