Why do some people think that there's something wrong with you iif you're not on it? I dont like Facebook, i dont like Facebook stalkers, I'm not obsessed with making as many 'friends' as i can on it, who most of I dont even know anyway and wouldnt talk to them if I met them in the street.

I'm on facebook but only use it to keep in contact with family. I have 6 brothers and sisters scattered around the globe and we find it a great and cheap way of keeping up to date on how everyone is keeping. Its also a great forum to share photos of the family among each other. We just keep our "facebook friends" limited to our family and keep our details hidden and we don't accept friend requests from non family members.

It works for us but each to their own:)

Im not on it, i think its a good idea for people travelling or if friends move abroad etc, i dont see the point of putting my life up on it, but it seems very popular so leave them to it i guess

MSN is really as far as i need to go

I am, but I'm not that active. I only joined because my sister was in Australia last year. Since then I still visit it but rarely for more than a minute a day - I think I've fewer than a dozen "friends" on it, mainly family.

Never got into this whole social networking thing so I fully sympathize. I did try to give twitter a go before facebook (none of these damned things use capital letters) but that was more of a test of endurance. Didn't make the one-tweet-a-day-for-a-year target I'd set myself. Can't honestly see the point of them, or the reason for the massive following they have. I have a mobile phone if they need to contact me. Anything else is drivel.

twitter is really for celebs and icons to follow, I dont think it was designed for 20 real friends to follow you, if you have less than 50, 000 followers you need to close your account

I'm on it, can't stay off it, handy for talking to mates and a good way to share photos. A lot of rubbish on it too but its not that hard to ignore it and just not care.

Why would you close your account if you have less than 50,000 followers? I've maybe 10 followers but i only use it to follow people, mostly journalists and people like that, its a great way for keeping up to date on what is going on.

Not on fb, can't think of anyone I would want to see a scrapbook of my life

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,412 ✭✭✭francie81

I responded to a similar thread not soo long ago so here goes again,
am on there but not 24hrs a day 7 days a week as I do have a life but I really don't treat it in the way many do as the OP stated but instead see it as a great way to keep in touch with close family, finding out about events and communication as a substitute for phone & email.

I do also get a thrill of seeing how alot of your soo called friends expose the true small minded or gob****es if you like they really are when you may have never known about before.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,284 ✭✭✭bonzodog2

I don't use it as me, but I did set up a profile under the name of an imaginary person, I find it amusing that about 20 people want to be their friend. FB was even suggesting someone 'I' might 'like', even though it knows nothing about who it thinks I am.

i remember the days of facebook where there were no stupid apps, no likes... and you had to be a student from an accredited third level institution to even get an account... it lost its way...but made lots of 'imaginary' money in the process.

this new open source one looks good thats coming out soon

I'm on it, it's good for keeping abreast of what's going on with my friends, as I don't see all of them too often, conflicting schedules etc. And it's a bit more casual than keeping in touch by email/phone/etc.
Basically it's ruined by all the ****e that's on it, but you can pretty much ignore all that if you want, and you can limit the amount of info you broadcast about yourself.
Other than that, the rest of it (in my experience) is just sharing funny internet stuff, in the same way as the Cool Vids forum. I guess most of the time I use it for the same reasons I use boards.

I have one but it's set to private and only close friends and family can see it. I don't get this whole thing of having 500 'friends'. I don't think I could even name 500 people. My facebook rule is if I haven't talked to them in over 2 years then they're culled off the friends list.

thats one of the dangers of FB ya dont know who mite be on it posing as somebody else if i was on it id just stick with who i know:eek:

I have an account set on private, which I generally keep de-activated. If Im given a link by a friend I'll re-activate it to look, and thats more or less it. With the exception of people trying to keep in contact with others living abroad etc., it's just a load of attention whoring from what I can see.

I'm a fairly private person, anyone who I want to be in contact with has my number / email whatever.

Are you on Facebook = Have you been assimulated?

    NO!

Got to hand it to Zuckerberg though, he made billions by creating a website where your "friends" can spam you meaningless relentless $hit all day long the guy is a fooking genius!

Are Facebook members called "Bookers" or "Zuckers?" :D

Not anymore, I had the account only for desperate times to save me credit.

I'll never have one again after my account was hacked a few days ago. Facebook is so insecure it's laughable, anyone that says differently is either brain dead or hasn't been on facebook before.

I'll be e-mailing instead from now on(that's if my friends and family get their act together and start using the bloody thing, instead of that stupid social networking site).

    So that's it. :)

I'm the same, my family wouldnt even know the ins and outs of my life so why would I want to broadcast to everyone on fb.

It's bad enough having my sister sending me annoying links to pictures when she knows I don't use it >.<

Explain how it's insecure. Can't just throw out a stagnant like that and not back it up.

Facebook's login security is actually pretty good. The people who tend to get hacked have personal information as their passwords which can be gleamed by scoping out their page (mothers name, pets name, DOB etc..). Or logging in at unsecured public wifi spots

My broadband doesn't involve wifi. I just use a usb plug-in broadband.

I live with my wife only. I can assure you that my passwords are always long random letters. I'm not an idiot for goodness' sake.

I have an account but rarely use it. I find it terribly boring. I have seen the film and read the book; fascinating. Quite possibly the biggest product in history. I mean, it's so so so global.

I just cannot understand why people feel the need to post everything on it?
They go for a meal, it's on it, they go to the doctor, it's on it, they take a crap, it's on it. Who cares? I don't wanna' know all your details.

Wait for its IPO; some serious bucks will be made.
