Adopt an MLS club.

Someone suggested this on the MLS thread(think it was Voltwad, could be wrong) and I thought it was a great idea. With the new season just having started it could be a bit of craic to have a team to follow.
So instead of typing out all 18 teams I thought it better to put up a provisional poll to see if people are interested in having a team for the SF to follow.

Would you be interested in the idea? 35 votes

Why don't we all adopt a LOI club? Not even a sarcy remark here, even if you don't want to go to games, why not find the local club to you and follow their progress? Not necessarily directed at the OP, you may already be a fan.

Fúck sake.:pac: It's only for a bit of fun, since I'd doubt most on here would have a local MLS team.

I am a LoI fan btw.;)

Eh, didn't really work with the whole Go Ahead Eagles thing

Yeah, something similar to the Go Ahead Eagles that was done a few years ago.

All I'm saying is that if it was done for the League Of Ireland instead, at least something constructive could come out of it in the future.

An MLS team would be a bit more accessible than a lower division \dutch team in fairness, though.

    Vancouver Whitecaps - they're a new/reborn team this season.

Without being sarcastic, I don't adopt clubs. I lived in the states I'd definitely go to MLS games though. I support two clubs and have one or two teams that I have a soft spot for over the years.

I do like New York Cosmos shirt though, espcially the retro ones. :)

I go to LOI games and watch MLS games but dont "follow" any particular team. I think threads for adopted Boards teams (LOI and MLS) would be good banter. Remember, there are football fans in Kerry, Tipperary, Clare, Offaly, Kilkenny etc. with no local LOI team. There isnt even a premier division team in all of Munster.

They don't have a local MLS team either. Very easy to do a quick Google map search and check whats nearest. At least that way you've the option to go to a game down the line if that interests. Kerry and Offaly do have teams btw.

    This.

This sounds good! I follow the LOI, but have no team to support :(

It'd be more difficult with a LoI team, though due to there already being a good few LoI fans on Boards and then the local team argument would pop up a lot.

Along with LoI the MLS is probably the summer-football league that would get the most TV time in Ireland with ESPN. With there being little football during the summer months, a few might start watching it and it'd be good to have a team to follow.

Doesn't need to be the same team though, which would only add to the banter. Doing an MLS team is very gimmicky and will be greeted with ridicule from many corners like the GAE thing was. At least with the LOI there'd be a chance of something good coming from it, more people getting involved, and it lasting.

Yeah I see your point and agree that it'd be great if more people here supported the LoI, but I don't think it will happen in the near future, unfortunately.

I'd go for the LOI thing but I already have an A Championship team and I'd be awfully torn when they get into the Premier Division, and that's only 2 years away.

    FC Carlow FTW.

It is no less feasible than this idea you're putting forward. Yeah it won't turn people into hardcore fans at the opening of a thread, but it would certainly be more productive than us deciding to follow an American's teams progress for a few weeks and then growing tired of having no opposition fans to argue with over that last minute penalty incident.

Has anybody tried watching MLS recently? The presentation is bizarre. I was watching a game and the commentators cut to a woman who was describing the weather, while the game was going on?!

The LOI makes the most sense for me anyway, MNS is on every Monday night for those of us who aren't as into making the trek on a Friday night. The real action is in the First Division though:D

Seriously though, I agree with you, LOI would be a better option if people would go for it.

The MLS thread just be for a bit of crack, so that a good few boardsies would be united while watching a match at some ungodly hour of the night.

That would depend on the attitude of LoI fans of clubs. They can be dickheads to people trying to get involved, or appreciate the interest of new potential sources of income which would benefit the League as a whole. Their choice.

In all my time as a LOI fan, I've never seen fellow fans be a dickhead to people trying to get involved, nor those who are likely to get involved it my experience it has always been to those who will never get involved, because of their own attitude too. If someone wants to make a similar poll (I'm way too shy for these things) I can almost guarantee you'll get a good reception from the LOI boardsies.

    Thats very encouraging.

Ive never really had to put up with dickheads at matches myself. I was just replying to baz's concerns that their might be arguments with current LoI. Im just saying that the success of such a thread would mostly depend on their attitude. And as we all know, attitudes on the internet often vary from those in real life.

Would you be saying the same if someone had put forward the Australian A-League as the alternative? You may say yes, but I don't think so at all.

As far as I can tell , each LOI side is represented here by a couple of fans at a minimum. Are they all going to drop their clubs and get behind the one nominated one? The idea is that the forum as a whole supports the club concerned.

Hell yea sounds fun. I already keep an eye on other teams just because of my success with them in football manager. Might be good craic arguing over our MLS team's Carrick :D

Might learn a bit about their drafting system too

I always try to keep an eye out for the NY Red Bulls as I've been to NYC a lot in the last 3 or 4 years.

Not sure if the adopt a team thing will take off? If you feel nothing for a club, it'd be difficult to follow them.

I think it would make more sense to pick a LOI team as youre a lot more likely to visit one at some stage, than you are to visit an MLS side.

The argument that you have no local team is a short sighted one. I would hazard a guess that the majority of the posters here have a LOI side much more local to them than an MLS side.

I was of the opposite opinion. I said(or at least implied) that no one would have a local MLS side so it'd be easier, but I had the wrong end of the stick as to what CSF's idea was with the LoI one.:)
