Cardio and Weight Training Mix?

    Hi,

I'm looking for some fuel for an argument with my friends who think I'm a meat head and that weight training is pointless(& vain..). I'm a tall and blocky guy and find running strenuous on the ole shins. I find I don't get as much out of it compared to what I can do on my lunch break in the gym.

My mates are skinny little fellas and they think I should only be doing CV all the time and anything outside of that is silly. I feel that doing 15 mins CV(after that time you're burning muscle rather then fat) and 45 mins weight training(dead lifts, squats, Chest arms and abs mainly) I'm burning more fat and getting more out of my time.

I reckon Cardio/running would augment my training rather then doing just cv/running. After the gym I'm still burning up energy where as after running all I have is some fatigue to my legs but not much.

    What you guys here think?

I think it would be silly to continue discussing this topic with your friends as its quite clear they haven't a clue what they are talking about. Just reply "that would be an ecumenical matter" to all there questions and points. :D

Maybe I'm miles off, but 15mins of cardio would seem OK for you, especially if you do intervals.

Sounds like metcon/circuit training might be more your thing though. Never mind what your mates say.

Your friends are idiots. Why would just running be good for ya? Need to move some furniture, sure just run around it til vacuum is created and it’ll move itself?!

No point arguing with them. They’re close minded.

You’ve a few misguided ideas of your own too – your body doesn’t start burning muscle after 15 minutes of cardio 

Thanks for the re assurance guys. I think I'll just have to prove it to my friends with the eventual results...

I was typing a bit faster then my brain on my original post. What I heard somewhere(Mens Health...) was that you burn up your carbs in the original 15-17 mins and a bit of fat ontop of that. But that after 20 mins you begin to burn muscle.... Is that not the case?

    Oh bugger...
That's what you get for reading things in the dentists waiting room :( should have read the economist instead!

Well I guess what CV I do gets the ticker going. That's something.

I always understood "fit" to mean being able to run 10k or last 2 halves of a soccer match or being generally energised with all your parts in good working order.

When did "fitness" become burning as much fat in the smallest time frame possible?

I reckon it's just about balance. I honestly can't see the point in building huge mass if you can't run for an hour.... by the same token, i don't see the point in being a 9 stone marathon runner either

My main goal is to be able to live past 50 and to walk into any store and pick up any item of clothing knowing that they will probably have it in my size...

If that's all your goal is just do a mix of cardio, body weight exercises and moderate weight lifitng and eat right for the most part. No need to go crazy as by the sounds of things you ain't looking to turn heads with your physique.

50 because by the time I'm 50 they'll be able to grow me a new body and put my brain into it... ;)

My primary aim right now is to get the inches off, fit into a sharp suit and have more energy. After that I'll start work on the physique phase.

If you're doing 15 minutes cardio and 45 minutes weights I'd suggest doing HIIT after doing weights. 15 Minutes of low-mid intensity cardio isn't much good to anyone really, it's not going to break the bank. Doing HIIT after a good weights session is awesome. You feel like **** straight after it but after you walk out of the gym the illness subsides and you will feel like a king and get more results for the time you put in.

Meat heads will be meat heads and say only do weights. That's fine. Some people will just do cardio which is also fine. Smart people will get the best of both worlds and do both. Anyone who tells you to just do one or the other probably doesn't look too great. If someone put a gun to my head and told me to just choose 1 I'd do weights because you can get a good cardio workout by doing weight circuits and the like but nobody will ever do that so I'll do both.

Also if your shins hurt when you run it's likely that you don't have the best technique. Youtube POSE running technique and it should rectify that problem somewhat. You will also find running for longer much easier once you have the technique nailed
