Group cycle to Berrings yesterday. Minuses: lost most of the group (several times in fact!), still have a couple of niggles from a fortnight ago, and got a puncture. Pluses: pleasant route, all the bits hung together sufficiently for the task, and the weather was absolutely amazing.

Queen's drive in killarney. It's a bit of a ballbuster of a climb but the rewards are worth it

Would that he one of the hairier routes in and around Muckross Lake, near Torc Mt? Didn't quite get my head around how those were supposed to work -- entrance I came across had "no bikes" and "one way" (huh?) signage...

No, this road leads up over Torc. Head out the Muckross road and turn left just after the Muckross Park hotel up the Mangerton road. After a few hundred metres you'll come to a left 90 degree bend and the entrance to the gravel road in the picture is across the road here

You'd need a mountainbike, its quite rough at times. There's a gateway at the top after a lot of climbing with a small pedestrian gate to the right of it, this is the entrance to Bill Cullen's summer house but there's a public right of way through the front of the property. The right of way will lead you to some nice trails over Torc waterfall, it can be a bit of a maze up there.

The trail you mentioned around Muckross lake is ok for bikes but I think you are meant to do it in an anti-clockwise direction. The 'no bikes' are only for people going around in a clockwise direction (don't ask me what the thinking is behind this).

As I sat on top of the Cooley Mountains at 8am on Sunday morning, munching on my Banana and staring out over Carlingford, I thought the very same thing.

When the sun shines here and sometimes even when it doesn't, there is just nothing else even close to it........... even in Louth :D

It absolutely is. I spend about a week of each month travelling either around Ireland, Europe or the US with work and there's not much that has come close to how amazing Ireland can be on a great day, or how atmospheric it can be on a terrible day.

Ah gotcha, similarish area to where I was thinking right enough, then, but on the other side of the RoK road. Logically enough, lough on one side, hill on the other!

Right, wondered if that was the case. Sign at that end is very unclear. Had originally route-planned it the other way, I think, then ended up at the far end on spec after a different cycle, scratching my head wondering if it was feasible or not!

    Half and half.

SPD's on one side, flat gripped pedals on the other. M324 from memory, but I could be wrong. I find them great.

Shoes are Exustar SPD's, pretty good balance between stiffness, comfort and being able to walk around.

Lac d'Estaing this morning. It's a 15km climb to 1200 metres. Spring is melting that snow fast.
