Was the recruit killed ?
i only heard that they were seriously injured.

Thoughts are with the family :(
    R.I.P

Hope this murder doesn't mark the start of a wave of attacks or a new tactic to scare RCs out of the PSNI

Reports are somewhat confusing. Being reported that he is critically injured at the moment. Hope the recruit can pull through.

From BBC website "2 April 2011 Last updated at 16:41"
A police officer is in a critical condition after a bomb exploded under his car in Omagh, County Tyrone.

The device exploded under the vehicle outside his home in Highfield Close, off the Gortin Road, just before 1600 BST on Saturday.

It is not clear if there have been any other casualties.

Since 2007, dissidents republican have planted dozens of booby-trap bombs under the private cars of police officers.

The bombs usually fail to detonate and have killed nobody.

But two policemen have lost their legs in attacks in May 2008 and January 2010.

The news report said house were shaken by the explosion. So it sounds like a large device.

Do we have any confirmation that he was killed? If not the thread title should be edited until we get more updates.

    Very sad to hear this.

He had only passed out 3 weeks ago.

Just goes to show how important it is for all PSNI officers to check their vehicles and look after their security. Please let it be a warning to everyone.

Thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family.

Basically I after genuine and serious consultation with G'Ville staff and various other sevring policemen I had questions I could not answer re serious security concerns. Worst and toughest decision I made was rejecting offer. I did it formally and returned all info I received etc

I just had a terrible feeling this would have happened as around the announcement of the last 2 recruitemnet campaigns, The devolution of Policing and Justice to NI, and now end of 50:50 something bad has happened.

The hateful scumbags are picking significant dates. i cant express my sadness at this story.

Genuine condolences to all friends and family of this young man!

For all we know he could've been a boardsie...sickening thought :(

RIP and my heart goes out to his friends and family.

It truly sickens and saddens me that there are people out there willing to kill someone just because of their occupation, just for doing what they love and what they have probably dreamt about doing for a long time, in such a cowardly way too. The poor guy only got to live the dream for 3 weeks too.

Apologies for the colourfull language...but these people are pure and utter cowardly, hateful, backward, b**tard c**nts who have no place whatsoever in our society.

Sky News reporting that he was killed as he walked towards the car, he never got a chance to look under it.

Unfortunately these terrorists need to ' get lucky ' just once ( as we are always being reminded ).
As per Sky News the dead officer was an RC - proof of an effort to dissuade RC's from joining .

R.I.P. and condolences to all effected.

I'm sitting here crying, through sadness and through anger. My family don't understand why I have taken it bad, I don't know why I have either. It must be since I started trying to join the PSNI I have come to regard all officers to be a bit like friends to me, I suppose it is because the PSNI is one big family and I want to be part of that family. It's hard to explain.

It's happened more than once, coupla of lads have lost their legs in similar attacks over the last few years and God only knows how many devices have actually been planted.

Nothing to be ashamed of Goonerdee, this news has struck a chord with me too. As terrible and as sad that all attacks in recent years have been, including the death PC Carroll in 2009 (RIP), this one has definately hit me a bit more. For me the fact that he was so young and had only so recently passed out of training makes it a bit more personal to me. More than likely he was from this campaign or the previous one, either way I was also fighting for his job. That poor guy could have been any one of us. It is incredibly sad. Having said that, it will never ever deter me.

Thanks to the thread in AH I accidently wondered on to another message board...I have never felt so angry and sick to my stomach reading some of the comments and reactions there to this. There are some truly vile people out there

Jesus another young Catholic life taken by scumbags who seem to think they have the right to chose that someone should die solely because of their religion and for having the balls to sign up and do the job that so many are too scared to do because of cowardly attackers such as these!

As a RC desperate for recruitment to open up again, this news has terribly shaken me. But I simply refuse to let scum like this deter myself, and any other RC that wants to stand up to these people and show them that we simply will not do a job because dissidents say that we are not allowed to! Who the f*ck made them God?! B*stards! (sorry about the language).

    R.I.P. Officer

Sickened by this news also filled with sadness at the thought of these animals trying to drag our country backwards, because of their own selfish thoughts and plans. So much effort to get the "dream" only to have it taken away in a total act of madness!

I/we can only hope that this murder will have the reverse effect on our country and unite people against this scum that threatens our future and that of our families.

My heart goes out to the officer's family and friends, you are all in my thoughts.

    RIP

Agreed, what a needless waste of life, but I fail to see what religion has to do with it. Catholic or otherwise.

The terrorists are specifically targetting Catholic officers to try and discourage other catholics from joining the PSNI.

You can't. They hate. That's it. I'll bet the police do know who did it. I bet they have a fair idea who they are. They just can't pin it on them.

Condelences to this young officer's family and to his colleagues. As someone close to republican politics, I believe that violence is not the way forward. Those responsible must be brought to justice, and those who are clearly harbouring or supporting them must be prosecuted.

The more attacks they carry out, the more brazen they become. Whether it's attacks on the state or harassment of people who oppose them in the community.
