I was going to ask the same question ? I mean the BBC in fairness to them do the golf very well. What about Peter alliss doing the commentary ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,431 ✭✭✭dvemail

I hope to God he's there, without him and Ken on the Course it just wouldn't be the same.

Fear not, ad times for the Masters are dictated by the Masters committee and not the broadcasters, so if you're watching Sky this year, you'll only see adverts at times when you would be looking at Azaleas on the BBC. Thankfully the committee allow very few ads per hour.

I hope to God your right.

I think I will stick on BBC for the weekend though all same.

I'm struggling to imagine how golf could be made more enjoyable by watching it in 3d. Has any1 watched it in said format? Unless you can get a read on the greens I can't really see any point!

Not my cup of tea, Lineker makes me cringe, he's so smug and he comes across as a complete airhead.

Lineker hasn't done the golf on the bbc for a couple of years. Also the Masters was in HD last year on bbc.

if your ever in dundrum shopping centre, with a pain in the hole watching the other half shop, head into the sony centre there... they have a 3d tv down the back on which they show about 3 mins of last years masters... theyll give you the 3d glasses if you ask... needless to say its scary good sitting about 7 feet back from what must be a 50" tv...

.... but sitting in a pub from a funny angle - it mightnt be so class... but sweet jehova its class for hd golf.

after youre done in the sony shop.. head next door to the icecream place!

    next stop... butlers coffee shop.

    Whaaat? Peter Allis terrible?
For my money he makes the tournament. It's like watching the Masters with one of your mates (who knows a thing or two!)
Not for nothing is he known as the "voice of golf".

Just proves it takes all sorts......

I think he's brilliant to be honest. He might not have the most up to date knowledge of the game or some of the players but some of his comments are priceless.

A few years back one of his co-commentators, talking about the erratic play of one golfer, said that he would need help from Carol Vorderman to add up his scorecard. Peter Alliss immediately jumped in with "Oh, Carol Vorderman, I like her. I was watching her on tv last week and I got aroused!"

There was a few seconds silence where nobody said anything before Peter spoke again: "Yes, aroused, 7 letters. Not bad for someone who left school at 15!"

Think beacause they only have just the two days of coverage and also he
can't seem to remember anybodys name when he's commentating.

I'm with you on this, Aliss is a wally, he does have a good voice for commentating, but the content is often sadly lacking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 62 ✭✭the anser

Aliss still has it.....the BBC coverage is way ahead of NBC or the Golf Channel- breaks every 2 minutes, only focussing on big name players, silly replays etc....lets hope at least SKY have their own cameras and commenatators there.

No loss. He is one of the worst golf commentators I have ever heard. You would think he had never played or seen the game in his life. Desperate.

Setanta has live coverage on all four days of The Masters too.

I don't know what commentators or feed they are using.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 619 ✭✭✭sweetswing

Peter alliss is golf , I think it's the young guys on here that think he is crap, and the older guys just love his ramblings, could be wrong though.
I could listen to him cack on all day long, very entertaining.

Another thing I like about Peter Alliss is how he's not afraid to say the first thing that pops into his mind. Too often lately I've seen the camera pan to a couple of kids or a fine looking filly and the commentators go silent, almost afraid of saying the wrong thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,005 ✭✭✭veetwin

Thanks Mister Sifter for the crappest youtube link ever!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 112 ✭✭johntommy

Another famous Alliss comment was when the camera went onto a pond with some ducks swimming. Instead of commenting on the beauty of the ducks, he said "oh for some orange sauce".

Sky have brought all there fancy gadgets across to Augusta :D I dont care about all the analysis crap, i will just want to see the golf shots being played and thats all.

Alliss's Van De Velde comments during the Open were hilarious. He described his plunges as more "Jacques Tati than Jack Nicklaus"

I only found this out tonight, well pleased to hear it, but so surprised that Sky and Setanta are showing the same event, most unusual I would have thought?

I've always loved the BBC coverage on everything but I have to say, barring a few live hiccups with the software they were using, I thought Sky's coverage last night was top drawer. Signs are positive that they will do a good job.

Wayne Grady is shockingly poor. His attempts at humour are cringe worthy and he offers nothing.

I dont watch him for the humour. I leave that up to Alliss. I like his golfing knowledge. He is like a studio Leadbetter.

Nobody watches him for the humour. That's why the "humour" is so annoying.

I wonder if people are moxing up Wayne Riley and Grady. Grady is tolerable on the BBC but 'Radar; on sky is out of the top drawer of plonkers.

I may have spoken too soon... awful amount of repetition of the same old soundbites and clips already and it's only Wednesday. Although it wouldn't kill me to change the channel once in a while.

Glad I dont have to watch US coverage of the Masters. The sentimentality is sickening. I really couldn't give a sh!t that the place is "steeped in history"

I can't speak for anyone else, but I certainly did. I had a complete brain melt there for a second. Apologies to all. I was replying...all the while thinking...Grady doesn't sound right....but sure jump in head first anyway.

Jaysus all the golf I watch...dunno how I did that.

    Apologies again.

Watching on Setanta, but I do miss Alliss and his musings/ramblings....

One thing I don't miss though is Shane O'Donoghue and those awful post round interviews....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,545 ✭✭✭tunguska

Why arent the first two rounds of the masters on BBC this year? Nobody seems to have given an answer for that. I watched the preview the other night and (the lovely) Hazel Irvin looked a bit embarressed when she was detailing BBCs coverage. Alis looked pissed off. Dont tell me this is the begining of the end of the BBCs coverage of the masters and next year it wont be on at all?

The Ryder cup was pretty cool in 3-D, havent had a chance to see the Masters yet but should do tonight.

It does help you see the contours especially from low angle shots.
