Working in the US

I've always wanted to work in the US and once or twice I came close but it fell through due to circumstances out of my control.

I looked into my options before and it seems that a H1-B is the main one that would apply to me (I think). The other option seems to be an L visa for intra-company transfers but I'm not permanent with my company so they will never pursue that.

I was just wondering what my options are? Is it really as hard to get an employer over there to sponsor you/get you a visa? From what I understand, the H1-B's don't get snapped up anywhere near as quickly as they used to so perhaps there's more of a realistic chance now?

I work in IT, but I don't have a degree.

Anyone here moved/emmigrated to the US in the last few years? What are my best options outside of getting a job with a US company here and having to work for them for a while and trying to transfer at a later date?
