With the wind at your back, downhill etc. Whats the best you've done?!

Got 56km/h on my way to work this morning - level ground but with the wind behind me!!

    Touching 90kph in the Nurburgring.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,537 ✭✭✭✭Cookie_Monster

74 kph according to the GPS
(not the 72.3 I quoted in the other thread)

there's a thread on this bouncing around somewhere....

Jasus! I was happy with 56! I'd say 90 is some experience!?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,318 ✭✭✭✭Raam

    It was interesting.

84 or so is the highest I've hit, coming down from Sally Gap, and 80ish coming off the Glandon

I got to 74kmph as well - sprinting down by the Viaduct in Cork.

    Probably somewhere around 3000km/hr.......

    153545.BMP

This is from a computer so it must be right. I'm sure someone must've heard a sonic boom in North County Dublin yesterday? Anyone.......

My second fastest was over 70 km/hr in the Etape Hibernia last year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,505 ✭✭✭✭DirkVoodoo

72 km/hr, never the quickest descender it has to be said.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,497 ✭✭✭moby2101

Me and Rapidmike hit 87.7 KPH down in the Black Valley last year :)

    ...twas scary stuff!!

Sorry a bit OT but, same thing happened to my garmin on Tuesday, says my top speed was 277kph and i'd done nearly 9000km's! They must have turned the satellite towards Libya!

After immediately getting up to 75km/h on this descent (below) I decided to grasp the brakes tenderly again !!

I've gotten 96kph coming off the connor pass on the tt bike.
Aerobars at that speed are absolutely terrifying.

Although according to the garmin, I once hit 1685kph somewhere around limerick.

    9000km ?!?!?!? You're obviously a bit soft:)

I did 27,265 km and I have the track from the GPS to prove it.......

I only turned back when I realised I'd be late for work.

My top speed downhill is probably only in the 60s, so not all that high. I wouldn't be the best on descents, I'll freely admit, largely due to a lack of confidence, and having suffered a bad arm break at low speed, so I don't feel the need to risk finding out what I could do to myself at high speeds!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

89kph off Lugalla during the W200. I am getting slower maxes in my old age but higher averages (better cornering.) I know one boardsie, Tutschel, reported 125kph in an event in the Alps, and that was before he won that Red Bull road downhill thing. I would hazard a guess he is the fastest boardsie!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 340 ✭✭BULLER

I maxed out at 65kph on my mountain bike coming down from viewpoint by the hellfire. Was scary stuff, those roads are bendy and the cars fly around the corners...one wrong move and you're ****ed....
Anything faster than that sounds insane!

Back in the old days when I had slight nutter tendencys, I hit 58mph on the MTB coming off Keeper Hill in County Tipp, with a howling tailwind. (these were the days before Shimano Microdrive, I had a 52 front ring on for the day :) )

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 78,393 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

Normally get over 50kph on the commute, one way or the other, occasionally get over 60, and have hit about 66. I've managed about 52-53 on the flat with no wind, but then again Chris Boardman did 56 over a full hour on the same track

I've mentioned it before, but Fred has managed over 268kph on the flat (he was drafting though;))

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,604 ✭✭✭petethedrummer

I've spun out on 50-12 tailgating a bus. I need bigger chainrings. Didn't have a speedo.

    where?
The hill between Sally Gap and roundwood. Short but very steep descent (20%+)

ah yeah, Luggala ;) (according to OSI anyway, Fancy mountain if you will)
I though you meant that but it was the w200 route that threw me, trying to reconcile the two, I thought you meant somewhere else along the route...

Didn't they change the route a couple of years ago?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

Yes it changes regularly, I think it was 2008 it went there, my second W200 IIRC.

89km twice' coming off glenmacnass toward Laragh.
The descent is great due to the Plateau from the Sally gap. That means that on a windless day you can be sprinting at full tilt becore you ever start descending.

Did 83 last September coming off Conor pass into dingle in the rain. That was terrifying but I was too scared to brake.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,547 ✭✭✭funkyjebus

Hit 75 on the way down from the gap, that was with the breaks on. after 70 you starting questioning your ability to assemble a bike and wonder, did i tighten that stem enough......i hope so!

Just after you turn left at the cross? Car park on your left and you climb a little sharp hill just after?

76.7kph in August last year descending Wicklow Gap towards Laragh. My fav. descent too, nice wide road, good surface and great when it's dry.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 370 ✭✭DonalK1981

65kph downhill from kilmashougue last week. Will try to beat when I have a good view of the road ahead...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,627 ✭✭✭Lawrence1895

61.5 km/h, but I didn't see where, it was on the bike computer.

But I saw 55.8 km/h somewhere in town a few days ago. Do I have to say where without being in trouble with the law enforcement? ;)

56mph (~90kph) a few years ago while drafting a truck downhill on the N4 coming out of town. I was on my commuting MTB, wearing slicks, so was way undergeared - the truck did all the work.

[Yes, I know that drafting trucks is very silly. It's not something I make a habit of]

That's certainly quick alright. Two tricky points about that descent (assuming I have it right):
    1. You go through a shallow dip at the bottom and then you're immediately into a left hander, without having lost much speed. It could catch you out if you weren't ready for it. Running wide through that bend is not nice, as the middle of the road can be gravelly, not to mention the risk of meeting traffic coming against you.
    2. There are often cars parked on the LHS at the bottom, just where your speed is highest. That discourages me from actively driving into that descent from the top. Freewheeling into it gets me about 73kph. Maybe that spot was marshalled on the day of the W200? Or maybe you just went for it anyway!
I know one boardsie, Tutschel, reported 125kph in an event in the Alps, and that was before he won that Red Bull road downhill thing. I would hazard a guess he is the fastest boardsie!
Kudos! I would hazard a guess that you're right!

Hit 77kmh about a month ago coming down the Long Hill. It was my first time using cleats, I couldn't believe the difference they make when you really push on down a hill!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,519 ✭✭✭ozzy jr

First time down Sally's Gap the other day on my new bike. I was determined to pass 50km/h. There was no oncoming traffic so went into middle of road and took racing line. I'm nervous enough going downhill but managed to hit 65.8km/h. When I get braver I'll try and pass 70km/h.

54.5 between dun laoighre and dalkey going with the wind on an old Trek hybrid. I was pedaling furiously on the highest cadence so I'm not sure how I'll break 60 on this bike.

I've managed 62Kmh down the hill into Slane (the radar sign said 59) on the Dublin side - a little less coming back up though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,131 ✭✭✭Dermot Illogical

The radar sign flashed 64kph at me coming down the less steep side of Howth a few months ago. Best speed on the flat so far was 1km in 1min 4 secs, which is around 55-56kph.

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 78,393 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

I managed to break the 60kph barrier coming to the finish of a 25 mile TT a few weeks ago (on the TT bike just outside Batterstown) - definitely my fastest on the flat, and definitely no drafting benefit (a bit of a tailwind though)

Then again Chris Boardman averaged over 56kph when he set the hour record in 1996 ....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,063 ✭✭✭on_the_nickel

84kph on the Enniskerry side of Ballinstoe a few months back.

Wasn't bothered at all til I looked at the speedo!

74kpm flying down the other side of the Ditching on the London to Brighton.

62.2km/h on a hill in to Douglas, Stupid car slowed me down :pac:

    Around here I think

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34 Paralympic Cyclist

My Garmin once registered something like 120kph in a download file. Until I realized I forgot to turn it off on the drive home after a race!

I have hit over 88kph in a race though. (And will be racing the same circuit next weekend!)

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,144 Mod ✭✭✭✭robinph

I guess bends, traffic and pot holes are the issue. But I have had my GPS clock me at 96kmph, and only slightly slower other days, on skis a few years ago so I had expected bikes to be beating that. I did have a dead straight run to myself though. I was only hitting high 70's on busier runs elsewhere this year, and with trees close by that was fast enough.

Are you well above your top gear at these speeds on the bike?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 414 ✭✭aquanaut

65 kmph on way back from Dunmore East on Trek 1.5 - The forks seem to go a bit gooey or something so chickened out and sat up a bit :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,889 ✭✭✭feck sake lads

on my loaded touring bike coming down a steep hill in the cotswolds i managed 43mph, in Spain coming down a mountain i hit 60 mph road bike ;)
but ever since i broke my collarbone i copped myself on
