    Hey!

I'm Squatting 3 times a week as part of a strength program. Lifting a modest weight i.e. 115kg but its progressing nicely.:)

At present I'm squatting barefooted. I was wondering whether I should I invest in a pair of weightlifting shoes? Are they really needed or are they only used by competitive lifters?

    Thanks!

Not really necessary. Barefoot or shoes with a solid sole such as converse are perfect. I usually use shoes with a fairly thin sole or go barefoot. Does the job for me.

If you have money to burn then go ahead but they probably won't make much of a difference. Technique > shoe. As you progress further and have your technique perfected then maybe look at a different shoe to help you progress further. For most people the difference is negligible but some people do benefit from them.

not unless you are going to be doing regular oly lifting. A good pair of flat shoes/runners will do the job
