    Hello

I have been having this ongoing ear infection. My balance feels wonky most days. I have been to the doctor twice (and received two prescriptions) and have gotten amoxicillin but it hasn't seemed to clear it up.

Does anyone know of a specialist in the Eye and Ear hospital who I could talk to/ go to see? Whats the procedure for getting seen there?

    Thanks

As far as I know you would require a referral letter from your GP before any Ear, Nose & Throat consultant in the Eye & Ear Hospital would see you.

+1, and even then you're on a massive waiting list, because they have people waiting with cancer etc.

I got an appointment last September - for May 2012....

if you have the 180 or so go to a private consultant in the like of blackrock clinic or mater or something. well worth it imo and you will prob be seen quicker in the public systme then

If you do this then you have to pay for any further treatment such as follow up apts/Xrays/admissions privately also. They don't allow you to transfer from private to public anymore, once you pay you have to keep paying basically.

yeah but you only pay public hospital fees, which are a fraction of the private facilities. all boils down to money vs time i suppose.

I had ear infection. I made appointment to see gp. In meantime pain was so bad I went to a and e. They diagnosed it as X. Went to gp who had trained in eye and ear coincidentally for a rotation. He said what you have to remember about any doctor is when they train they might see one ear infection or one hundred and a and e were way off. Same with knees and other ailments. Experience of doctors is not universal and will vary so their knowledge varies.

Referred me to eye and ear. Antibiotics and they inserted a tampon like thing into my ear for a week soaked in antibiotics. String hanging off it like tampon and all. Keep ear dry using ear plugs and a shower cap.

Go to GP and ask for referral to eye and ear. I was told amoxicillin would not touch my ear infection by the way.

Sorry should say eye and ear is like a specialized a and e. No need for a consultant just a doctor who has seen lots of ears. Get it sorted. Ear infections can be serious. You can just go in to eye and ear I think without referral.

If you go without a referral you have to pay a €100 charge. Also, it'll be a doctor you see, not a consultant. If they decided you need to see a consultant you'll be put on a waiting list the same as you would with your GP.

Funnily enough I had an ear infection few weeks ago. Was put on augmentin (amoxycillin) and a steroid drop. Ear infection is coming back, only noticed last night.

Get a referral from your GP to Stephen Hoan in the hermitage if you want to spend 170 or have health insurance.

You know, when it comes to money, I only have one set of ears
