they are one breed that i dont get ,what are they trying to be,they dont have heavy muscle, dont have great length, beefy, milky, nothing really stands out with this breed. what are you putting him on , what market/customer are you aiming for, what advantage do you see from anbrac,i thought you spelled it aubrac.

ran a couple of aubrac bulls mopping up dairy cows and heifers .found them easy calving but took time (bulls two weeks at least).we kill a heifer and find their meat lovelly with little fat.supposed to grade well but cow has a lot to do with it

I think they are underated I had a bull with dairy cattle for a few years
Very docile and easy caving he grew biger than any of the charlois bulls that I had and his calves trived well
The only reason I sold him was I needed dairy replacments from a dairy bull
I know some one who has bread pb charlaos limos, salers, simantals, and a few blues and he thinks aurbac are the best to put on weight and leave profit

How did the aubrac work out for you?

He is throwing serious calves. Easy calved and did not carry anttime either 283 days. Calves will grade u +.Better than any limos i have ever had and quieter too.Bit short but bull is short next time will look for a longer bull. overall very happy with calves and will keep heifers of him aswell

Have one here as well JP, bought him to run with a bunch of heifers. Put him in with 28 heifers on 1st of june last yr, he was only 13 months old. Started calving on 1st march, only 2 left to calve now. Lost one heifer calving, also lost 1 calf that came backwards. Calves are small, all calved themselves, bar the two mentioned above, well shaped calves mostly dark brown colour out of angus heifers.

    Pic here taken last summer

Early days here yet Manjou. Colour is mostly dark to light brown, an odd red one. Also have one white f**ker with brown ears out of a bb x fr heifer, but he has good confirmation.

Some of them have close hocks which is putting me off keeping the heifers for breeding, but as I said early days yet. The calves are light at calving, about 40kg, which makes them easy calving.

The heifer I lost calved at night, saw her with the feet out at midnight and thought she'd calve herself like all the rest, so I went to bed:o Next morning she was a downer and calf was dead. My own fault really, should have assisted her that night.

What is your angus bull by?

3 week old white aubrac calf out of bb x fr heifer.

color looks similar to some of my own calves, pt bull and ch cows, they get darker as they get older

You're as changeable as the wind manjou, aubrac...angus...sim...bulls
a dexter might have more length than the aubrac? :-/ grand cattle but would a angus not do such a job with a bith more size, a neighbour is using a culard charls/aubrac bull yearling as his stock bull this year....grand width/ropey legs but he his almost taller than he is in length??

    Length = weight

Would anyone have a Aubrac bull for hire. I have only 9 heifers at the moment and can't seem to justify buying a bull at the moment.

Use ai? Tail paint, estrumate any not seen bulling after I think 12 days, check this out with vet as it could be later than this.

Hiring in a bull exposes you to all sorts of diseases.

12 days do you not mean 21 days for their cycle.

No, sorry didn't explain it very well. Day one you tail paint everything and serve them as they come bulling and change the colour of the tail paint as they are served, keep the paint touched up on the rest.

Looked it up there and it's after day 5 any not seen bulling, they get 2 cc estrumate not day 12

Try heat seekers, they're about €50 for 20, they're a patch you stick on a cows back.
When she's in heat due to allot of mounting they turn red.
Not as much work required, & can be replaced when AI

Do you find them reliable, is there much chance of false positives with them?

Yea found them good, but awaiting scan to prove.
Had issue with a few coming off (scratching on low branch in field or gate in shed).
There was a few that had no signs of being bulling but patch was red, rang AI man & he served.
I'll update when I've the results

Yes, cross them back to an angus bull, still have the bull, but I'm getting limited with the amount of cows I can use him on.

howdo ufind them as cows, are they milky , maternal docile etc?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 12,756 Mod ✭✭✭✭blue5000

They are quiet, milk wouldn't be huge, but it's enough, I think the bull is I think +4kg for milk. They are low sized, but broad cows, good mothers.

edit +5kg for milk breed av is +3.28
