Headset

I'm using the headset that came with the 360 but it's dire quality, keeps cutting out mid sentence, constantly crackling etc..
I was thinking of one of those xbox wireless sets but I was told that they don't improve the quality, their only feature is being wireless.

Short of forking out on an expensive set of headphones and macgyvering them, are there any solutions to improve this problem?

You're correct about the wireless MS headsets. They don't offer any improvement in sound quality.

The "cutting out" issue may be that your bandwidth might be getting used up by other programs either on your or someone else's PC/laptop on your network. Make sure all torrent programs are switched off, nobody's using youtube etc.

As for headsets that improve voice quality... virtually every other decent headset will make dramatic improvements to the voice quality. If you're on a budget, try the cheapest offering from TurtleBeach (http://www.limexb360.co.uk/product/Turtle_Beach_Ear_Force_XLC_TBEAFXLC), I've heard good things about them from a friend. Obviously, the more you can shell out, the better the overall sound quality will be.

    Hope this helps.

Never had a problem with the bundled headsets.

Have had a few of them.

Make sure it's not your bandwidth before you go shelling out on a turtle beach h\s

i have the turtle beach x11s and ever since i bought them i find it very hard to play a game without them.

just a question of the boys with the surround sound ones.

    is there much difference?

how do you connect them to get the surround sound?

Opti out on the back of the new xbox's , on my Trittons box theres a button for dobly surround sound.
I would say theres a difference , you probably wouldnt notice it too much until you actually went back to your x11's.

Yeah, they use the optical cable. You will notice a dramatic difference in sound quality. Basically, you have an analogue connection now, optical will allow you to have a digital sound.

Imagine the difference in picture quality between an old tube telly and a new HD LCD screen, that's the quality difference.

I have both x4's and the x41's, the original x4's are analogue but the newer x41's are digital. With the older x4's there's always a slight hissing noise in the background. You wouldn't even notice it there until you put on the newer x41's are then you become aware of the difference in clarity.

Seriously, don't buy them yet, wait a few more weeks to see Razer's new Chimaera headset. It'll be wireless, 5.1 surround sound headset and due out here in April. The base station will double as a recharger for your headset while you hang them on it. Should be good for about 8 hours gameplay per charge. Let's face it, you'll need a break then ;)

Supposedly, the product quality of the headset is going to set the benchmark for all gaming headsets. It's only going to be a fraction of the weight of Tritton's ax720 pro's (which are wired!), deliver virtually the same sound quality, more comfortable to wear and have a far superior feel and build to them.

I've been waiting and tracking their development for a year now and can't wait to get my hands on them and their matching Onza controller! Did I mention how awesome they look!!! (After posting this, if Razer feel like offering me a discount or commission, I shall accept humbly :D )

i'm thinking about upgrading to wireless now as i have way too many wires running across my room.

its just hard to justify spending so much on headphones
i might wait a few weeks and crack open my spare change box and see what i have.

Once I've got the Chimaera's, I may have a pair of x4's laying around unused. I'm sure we could come to an arrangement ;) Capasso uses them on Monday night's for a few hours when he's here. I suppose he'll expect the x41's if I move on to the Chimaera's :D

Personally I'm waiting for the Creative Tactic3D Omega wireless gaming headset, as it can be used across all the platforms I own (PC, Xbox 360, PS3) and just about everything else. I couldn't justify spending ~€200 on headset in only being able to use it on some of my games.

I'm currently convincing myself that it'd be ok for me to have three  Own Turtle Beach x4's & x41's... but that Razer stuff is quality.

I'm in the process of building a gaming PC (refuse to buy a PS3, not because there's anything wrong with them, just wouldn't make sense since I've three 360's), so the Chimaera's would work great with the PC as well as the xbox. Decking the PC out with Razer mouse, keyboard and gaming pad... so may as well buy the Chimaera and Onza too... if they sold PJ's I'd buy them too :D

Commission, I wish! I just know what I like :o

Before I got into gaming, I couldn't resist any piece of new tech that was chrome and black... be it phones, PDA's or any new gadget!

Although I've been really, really sensible for the last year or so and haven't bought anything... so I'm basically I'm about to go nuts and drop a shed load on tech this month!

I'm also open to suggestions :D

Here's a link to two UK sites that do deliver to Ireland. I've used both in the past and found them pretty good to deal with. Only the stereo headset is currently available but give it a few weeks and the 5.1 will be too.

Dark Knight, I'm sure you're aware that you can't actually advertise or sell products on this forum. You can use adverts.ie, which is free to advertise on.
Pop an ad up there and I'm pretty sure you'll get a buyer.
PM me the link on adverts and I'll post it on the IRL CLAN website for you too.

What do you guys think of the Tritton AX120 or AX180s? Does anyone on here use them?

Looking to get a mid range set for about €50 and don't want to buy Turtle Beach, as I've heard too many stories of faulty speakers.

Just upgrade from tb X41's to Tritton AX pro's, the difference is like night and day. You can't beat turning on people who trying to knife you in the back and popping a head shot off :)

    Cheers lads,

Went for the Tritton AX180s in the end. €60 in Argos.

Have to say I'm impressed so far, haven't had a decent session yet, just an hour of Civ Revolution last night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,162 ✭✭✭TheMooseInNam

My Razer Chimaera 5.1's arrived earlier today. I've posted this on the IRL clan forum but thought I'd share it here too.

First impression of the box was that it wasn't packaged as well as the other Razer stuff I've got before.

Inside the box, the usual Razer documentation of authenticity, stickers (I've ran out of places to put all the stickers!) and of course the base station and headset.

The base station is made of shiny black plastic that looks like the surface of an expensive piano... you know the type... normally with a blonde drapped across it. Checked the box, no blonde supplied icon_cry.gif

I decided to plug the base station in first. The bottom of the base station is raised about half a centimeter which allows it to emit a neon green glow and surround the area in a gorgeous soft light. Plus the Razer logo lights up in the same neon green colour. Have to admit, it's pretty impressive sight. Razer really know how to appeal to the inner boy-racer icon_lol.gif

    So, on to the headset...

First impression is that they're big compared to the Turtle Beach x41's. In reality, they're not really much bigger at all. It's just that the chunky headband and squarer shaped ear cups gives you that impression. They're finished in a matt black on the outside but with that piano black finish on the inside of the ear cups and headband.

They look solid and give the impression of quality. You'd imagine a stealth bomber fighter wearing these to communicate with his co-pilot icon_lol.gif I moved the x41's over beside the Chimaera's before picking them up. Don't get me wrong, I love the x41's but they don't look as good as the Chimaera's... not even close...

Deep breath as I picked them up but I was quite surprised at how light they were. I was expecting them to be quite heavy, for some reason... probably back to the impression that they look bigger than the x41's. Again, after holding both at the same time, there's very little in the difference, if anything. This is good news, as I don't want the problem of the Tritton's where they get very heavy and uncomfortable on long sessions.

The construction of them seems to be very simple and very solid. It's almost like they consciously decided not to make them fussy. I guess the less gimmicks, the less to fall off or break. There's 10 levels of adjustment on each head band, allowing you to extend the distance by up to 3-4cm on each side.

Underneath the top of the headband are five small charging points which allow you to sit the headset onto the base station for charging. This brings me to the next point, I was afraid that they would have a sealed battery pack for charging. I was delighted to see two AAA rechargeable batteries included in the box. So, once they stop taking charge or I run out of power mid session, I can simply replace them just like with the x41's.

The built-in mic is placed into the right earcup and allows you to fold it down and angle it towards your mouth. Pushing it back up out of the way also mutes it, alternatively you have a mute buttom on the right earcup too. All I know is that it works, no idea what the quality is like. Spoke to Shoveltooth briefly earlier and he said it was fine... after telling me it was crap initially... funny guy icon_rifle.gif

On the right earcup you'll find a full mute button and a button to switch between xbox live and linked Chimaera's during tournament play. On this subject, each Chimaera gets sync'd with the base station which means you can probably have numerous headsets and base stations in the same room working independently to each each.

This is a major disadvantage of the x4's and x41's (possibly the x31's too) from Turtle Beach. Every headset picks up the same signal, so if you have two Turtle Beach base stations and two headsets, you'll have a complete mess of a signal. Hence why I ended up with one x4 and a x41.

Putting on the heaphones for the first time, I was surprised at how well they fit. I'm used to the x41's just laying over the top of your head and the earcups just laying against your ears. With the Chimaera's, I found the headset has actually gripped my head with a slight amount of pressure and the cups fit snuggly over my ears. I read a review before that claimed the Chimaera's were too big and loose and that the earcups never pressed against your ear, so outside noises filtered in. What a load of garbage! Either the person was making this up or had recently visited the Shuar tribe in the Amazon and had their head shrunk to the size of a pebble icon_rolleyes.gif

Finally, I'll get to chat about the sound quality. Let's face it, everything I've written about already is pretty pointless if the quality isn't up to scratch. I decided to test both the x41's and the Chimaera's out on the 360 first and then on the PC listening to various music... Adele, for the voice and low background instruments; Marlyn Manson for the crazy intense sound and some classical music to finish off... perhaps my favourite adagio "Suite for orchestra No 3 in D major, BWV 1068: Air" by Bach (a true test of audio quality which the X41's can't handle without sounding hollow and tinny).

I've spent the last three hours listening to music, movies and playing some games on the xbox. I thought this was going to be a close comparison and I'd have to give lots of detail to explain the differences, if any. Up to now, I thought the x41's were a 8.5/10 and my old Tritton's were a 9/10 for sound quality... reserving the 10/10 spot for the fictious perfect headset. I now realise that my scoring system was complertely wrong. If I was to give the Chimaera's a 9/10 then the Tritton's's would be around a 7/10 and the x41's around 6.5/10. Seriously, I'm that impressed!

Allow me to put this in context, up to now, I considered the headsets I've had as high quality and some of the best available on the market at the time. I now realise exactly what I was missing! There's a depth to the music and game sounds that's been missing from all the other headsets. Sure, it has something to do with the bass but it's more than that. It's the overall sound quality that's immensely powerful. I'm totally stunned, I seriously wasn't expecting this. I had myself resigned to the fact that I'd probably spent a wad of cash on something that wasn't really going to enhance my audio experience at all... but would look funky... how wrong I was! I seriously can't believe this headset is wireless!!!

My final words of advice, if you don't have a spare €230, then don't try out the Chimaera 5.1's, as you'll never be happy with the sound quality of your old headset again while knowing these exist! Remain blissfully ignorant with cash still in your pocket and buy someone you love something nice.

Plantronic's are a very good brand, they specialise in making headsets and mics. I bought their Halo headset/mic years ago for the original xbox and have owned various Plantronics mobile phone headsets over the years. I can't give an opinion on the x95's but I'd guess they'd be of decent quality.

The x41's are fantastic and I believe they are coming down in price now too. They're down to around €145 on Limex360 now. Probably find them cheaper elsewhere too.

    http://www.limexb360.co.uk/product/Turtle_Beach_Ear_Force_X41_Wireless_Surround_sound_Headset_TBEFX41

However, the x41's are tried and tested and they are excellent. Just make sure to have your wireless router more than four foot away from it so as to avoid interference in the form of pops and crackles... maybe the odd snap too ;) Once I had positioned it correctly, it worked faultlessly.

Also make sure to have spare rechargeable AAA batteries for it. It's designed to suck every bit of power out of the batteries, so one second you have perfect sound, the next they just power off without warning. You'll get about 20 hours of gaming out of a set of batteries so it's not like you'll need to change them regularly or anything.

The best feature of the x41's is the fact that it filters your own voice back through the headset. You wouldn't notice it but it avoids you feeling like your voice has disappeared. Highly recommended headset.

well, 145 euro is a terrible price, amazon has them for 90 pound! ive never had a proper gaming headset before and i dont play FPS so would a stereo headset be adequate? if i could sell my n64 on adverts or elsewhere, id definitely go for the x41s.

EDIT: what do you think of the x31s Moose, considering the fact they are 30 pound cheaper than the x41s...

Stereo sound or for relatively little extra money, you get 7.1 surround sound... Alan Wake is great in surround sound, so not just for FPS's!. Amazon's price seems very good too at about €115.

dead space 2 with any turtle beach headset. scary stuff.
they seriously enhance any game. you'd be amazed how sound increases brilliance of some games.

Yeah, you're completely right in that. No matter how good your sound system, when you put on a headset for the first time it's as like you've opened your eyes for the first time. The whole game experience changes and you'll find yourself completely emmersed into that world's environment, whether it's an FPS, RPG or any other genre.

It doesn't matter what headset you get, they'll all be better than what you currently have with a TV or Home Cinema. Pick a budget you're comfortable with and buy the best available for that money.

I've a pair of Turtle Beaches X1 I believe, bought them of a friend for 10-15 Euro. Forget now, but they're decent, plus voice quality is good. Might be able to pick a second hand pair of adverts/ebay for feck all money

If you can afford it get the astro A40. I borrowed my friends last night and wow:eek:

I have the turtle beach x11's which I was pleased with when I got them. But after using the astros i'm saving up. The surround sound is unreal. takes getting used to cuz you keep turning around when you hear lil things behind you.

yes they are very expensive but i'v been keeping on eye on ebay and the wireless a40s(the ones im gonna get) usually sell for about 80 euro less then the brand new ones so they keep their value for sometime.

if you can afford them I recommend you get them :D

I really do think they're that good. I love mine... so far...

I bought mine directly from the Razer online store for about €230. They're also available from Limex360.co.uk for similar money.
