Oat alternatives?

I seem to have an intolerance to oats, which is unfortunate as I love porridge. Is there anything I could try to make them more digestible, eg. soaking them?

If not, the internet has thrown up quinoa or millet as alternatives but the cooking time is pretty long compared to oats - are there any other grains that might work? I'm currently having spelt muesli with yoghurt but I miss having a nice hot breakfast. All suggestions gratefully received :)

Have you tried gluten free oats?

No, but I'm not sure that I have a gluten intolerance. I don't eat much wheat but I have wholemeal pasta and pittas sometimes and they don't seem to have the same effect as oats [feeling nauseous and bloated].

Aye I don't know, but I would have guessed that gluten free oats would be easier for your body to digest. Maybe use slimline or soya milk while making it too?

I'll give them a whirl, I already use soya milk anyway. Thanks!

Soaking the oats overnight will also deffo make them easier to digest but just remember is eating something that doesn't agree with your digestive system all that great long term.

I'm willing to cut them out completely if they continue to disagree with me, it's not worth the pain.

I saw quinoa flakes in a health food shop today, they actually look quite like oats.. not as scary as I thought they might be. I'll put them on the list of things to try for sure.

If you're soaking them overnight, a dessert spoon of probiotic yoghurt in with them is supposed to help with antinutrients.

Great thanks, I'll experiment this weekend. I'll miss your famous oat pancakes most of all :(

You could try buckwheat flakes - makes a nutty kinda porridge!
