As the title suggests I've bought a new a car. As most of you will know I've been considering buying for a long time now (I think almost 12 months). I've had numerous doubts over since I've been posting here which has really annoyed me.

Anyway in order to finish off the various threads I've had I thought I'd post to let you know what I've bought.

In the end I took Volvoman's advice and went for a Nissan Micra. Here's a picture of it

The refinement of it was second to none and nothing else I drove could keep up with it!

Nah, I bought a Le Mans Blue E93 335i M-Sport with 19,000 miles on it. I'll post pictures up of it once I pick her up.

I've a quick question in relation to taxing it though... The car is a 2008 model (Janaury 08) so it was initially registered under the old CC tax rules. I'm right in saying that cars registered between the 1st Jan - 30th June 08 have the benefit of a availing of either the CC rules or the emissions rules - i.e whichever is cheaper, correct?

I just checked the motor tax cost for the year (I assumed it had been switched over to the Co2 rules) and the motortax.ie service is telling me that its under the old CC rules. Surely this is wrong as the Co2 emissions of the car is 205 (correct?) and it therefore falls into category F - which means annual road tax of €1,050 versus €1,293 under the old rules. Any ideas on how I sort this problem? I'm correct in saying that my tax should be €1,050 right?

As far as I know its weather it was purchased before or after the 30th july cut off date.

Before old system based on engine capacity.
After new system based on Co2 emissions

    Any pictures :pac:

Do you think the motor tax check service on motortax.ie is just bring up the old system and it's actually been transferred over?

    Congrats on the new car.

The new CO2 rates apply to vehicles registered after July 2008. Prior to that its the engine size. As your is Jan I think you will have to pay the old rate...

Edit sorry actually vehicles from January to June were swapped to the new rate if beneficial to the owner on first renewal after 1 July 2008. Doesn't apply to second hand imports if registered abroad prior to 2008.

When was it last taxed ?

I think they gave all buyers of 2008 cars the option to change to the new tax system if it worked out cheaper (in most case it did).

Dont mind people talking through their arse. I have a 2.0 TDI registered in March and its 302 P/A to tax as opposed to 600 odd euro.

The cost of the new car isn't overly important - the cost to change is what matters.

I know it did take me a fair amount of time to buy a car.

From memory I think I mentioned a 335 in one of my first threads but I was concentrating on higher end cars.

When I worked the figures in detail on the higher end cars it just wasn't working out. Insurance was also an absolute killer on them. I think I'll have to wait until I'm at least 25 until I move into that type of stuff.

    The 335 is manageable.

I'm not looking forward to the day when the thoughts of buying a house etc... will be occupying my mind instead of buying a car!

You can change to the €1,050 motor tax. See the link to the new motor tax and VRT regime in the charter

Quick question with regard to motor tax. I have a fiesta that I bought new in May 2008 and am paying tax on the old system. Can I change this to the co2 omissions and if I can how do I go about it.

Why? Would it be cheaper if it was taxed on CO2?

Thanks Rover. It was always my intention to wait until this year to get it. In hindsight, I probably started the first thread too early!

    Can't wait to get her!!

congrats, had an e92 for a couple of years, great car, the 335 is a stunner.

Take it handy on wet roads until you get the hang of her, take it easy on roundabouts, wide right handers etc.

If it has 19s with 265s on the rear it will be poor in snow like we had this year, imo just leave her at home if you are in a hilly area in particular or put winter tyres on. Even a bump into a kerb could cost you 1000s. Keep a close eye on rear tyre wear to combat the worst of handling issues and consider moving away from run flats also. Alo if it is 19s and the 225Ms then check them carefully for cracks, a lot of horror stories on e90post.com in the UK area. (although mine held up fine), very easy to kerb them though, so watch out for that.

Thank for the pointers, much appreciated.

    Yea she's on 225s.

I'm hoping we've had our fill of snow for a few years :) Unfortunately I've no other option of transport so I'll be investing in winter tyres if and when it starts to snow.

Is it getting wrapped or detailed?? Le Mans is a lovely colour, especially with a lick of polish & wax!

    That looks class...

She's not getting wrapped anyway. I might get her detailed in a while - will be popping into yourself if I do.

I want to see want she looks like once she's been cleaned up etc... before I decide what I'm doing to her.

The OP could have one of the last of the 07 MY cars (the ones without the Efficient Dynamics lark) - in which case the CO2 is 228 g/km i.e. €2,100 tax if done on CO2.

Well wear OP - sounds like a savage car you've bought :)!

I don't think this came in until mid 2008 so maybe that the issue...

The Revenue website is telling me that a Jan 08 E93 335i has a Co2 emissions rating of 226 - that would explain motortax.ie telling me it's taxed under the old rules.

The funny thing is that its also telling me a November 2009 E93 335i has a Co2 rating of 226. Seems weird. Did the efficient dynamics on E93 only come in when they released the LCI is something?

For some reason I thought you bought a Coupe!

I think even the Efficient Dynamics 335i cabrios didn't get into band F until the end of last year when they replaced the twin turbo engine in your car with a single turbo version. All other 335is went from band G to band F at end of 07/early 08 IIRC when the ED lark became standard on all 3 series (ED came before the facelifted models).

That motor tax is really not out of the way at all for the performance one gets. It borders on value really as looney as that sounds when you consider a 1.8 Primera or Avensis is €500 ish on the cc system. I hate paying motor tax as well as the next lad but on a 335i given the purchase price new it's not an unreasonable sum.

I'm told the car was €95k new. I don't know if I'd quite put it at that level but it certainly was €80k+ new.

The difference between €1,050 and €1,266 (or whatever it is) doesn't really bother me. I think that if I was having a fit over the €200 on tax then something like a 335 isn't for me.

I had one of my friends having a go at me last night for buying an i as opposed to a d. While I thought about buying a D in detail I decided that if I'm buying something like a 335 there isn't much point in doing it half arsed and buying the diesel.

Plus I'm hoping that someday I will pull upsides a 335D and the person in the D will look over and think "hmm... I should have bought the petrol!!"

I don't mind too much paying the grandish to tax the ZT :)
I don't really see what a 335d has going for it really in comparison (not wanting to get into a chat with any 335d folks as I really don't know enough to argue my point with an enthusiast :pac: ) to the 335i unless you are doing mega miles. The 335i can return very respectable mpg.

Yeah the D crowd come out and talk about torque and economy all the time. Trust me, I own a I and have driven a D extensively. The D is not, as fast, quick to accelerate, as light, as good sounding, as well handling, that much more economical, and somehow is second best. But when the D crowd come on talking about "real world", torque, economy etc just nod and say yes. ;)

Best of luck with the new car......pics......pics.....pics....
