Hairdressers: Is the pricing sexist?

Just made an appointment to get my hair cut at a well known Dublin establishment for Monday at 4.30pm.

The charge is €25 for a wash cut and blow job dry (Pete has to look good for the ladies).

.. but if I was a woman, it would have been €45!

This would appear to be the same at most Unisex saloons, should it be stopped?

Now, I know what you're gonna say (apart from 'go to the Barber you've caught the ghey') - you're gonna say that women have longer hair then men - but that is not necessary so. Granted, my hair is not Jon Bon Jovi's length (anymore that is ) but it's a few inches in length all over and many women have far shorting haircuts these days.

So, are they sexist? Should hairdressers be forced to stop displaying different prices for men and for women and maybe have prices for differing length instead? Afterall, the car insurance situation has now been rectified, should this follow suit? Cause I believe it should.

Wimmin seem to think that spending a lot of money means that they're going to look good, and hairdressers aren't going to tell them otherwise.

I get charged €10 for a haircut, done by a plump lady with tattoos, whose bingo-wings bounce off the back of my head (or are they tits, it's hard to tell?).

I cut my own hair, it's great fun. And free. And then I can tell myself to fúck off, I'm not going on any fúcking holidays and yes, the weather is shocking- without upsetting anyone. Except myself.

Also, as an aside, is there any actual difference between getting cut at a hairdressers and a barbers'? Remember years ago David Beckscum paid something like a grand for someone to do his blade 2 all over.

I can understand charging higher prices for long hair styles on women because it takes longer to cut and dry and stuff, but I have shorter hair than most boys I know and I'm still stuck paying higher prices than them purely by virtue of me being a girl. I wish barbers did girls hair and you wouldn't get funny looks, I'd be in there every week and they would probably do it better (If I say short, Ms Hairdresser, I mean short, I do not mean 2mm off my current length to keep it 'feminine'). :mad:

If they were both in Dublin today, Toni & Guy, Peter Mark etc etc would charge Alysssa maybe €50 to get her *short* hair trimmed, while Johhny Depp would be charged half that to get his *long* hair cut.

Does longer necessarily make it harder to cut? I don't think so, it's more about the style, if you're just getting straight long hair trimmed that easy peasy, shouldn't have to pay more for that. Some places have a price if you're getting a new style and then a cheaper price for just a trim which seems more fair.

The women don't seem to mind too much, otherwise hairdressers wouldn't get away with charging those prices. If they were to charge men those prices then they would never get us in the door. Women are a bit gullible when it comes to these things, have you ever seen how much they are willing to pay for a little tub of cream, it's laughable and something I don't think us men will ever understand.

my hair is generally jaw length - sometimes a bit longer - as hair grows you know :P i try to leave it as long as possible before cutting. the price... if i refused to pay to get it cut id be a bit stuck cos theres not much 1 person can do although if we all boycot them....
so i get my father to do it most of the time. he does my mothers as shes housebound. all i have to do as payment is stick the kettle on. phew. cant always ask the poor sod though.

its shocking that you have to pay 40/50 quid for a stinking trim too.

I wonder how much price differences have to do with frequency? Most guys I know get their hair cut every 2-3 weeks. But most women I know go every 6-8 weeks (for both men and women, this will vary by length). So over the same time period, men and women actually end up paying about the same amount of money.

Never noticed there are gendered prices in salons. Maybe it is on the assumption that women are more likely to get theirs blown, styled and producted.

I might pop into Peter Marks then on the way to the barbers next week and ask what the difference is with the two. I'll ask can I get the cheaper one anyway and see what the craic is. If they say no, I will post on this thread while I am drooling on my phone in the barbers. I doubt they would though...

I head to the Turkish Barbers to get my hair done as I have hair going over my ears. They're expensive as far as barbers go, €25, but they always do a good job. For that I get my hair washed, hair cut, hair dried, and beard trimmed. Plus a cup of coffee if I want it. If they charged by time I'd be fooked I'd say, last time I was there it took an hour and a quarter. But that being said, they seem to take their time with everyone, a semi-bald dude getting the hair at the side of his head trimmed took half an hour.

If the wimmins want to get a cheaper hair cut they could try them Turks. They seem to be better than the barbers who just whip out a razor but cheaper than "hairdressers."

When I do go to a barbers, I use The Grooming Rooms.

you can get a very cheap dry cut in dublin city. but omg... its risky. i did it once - 20 euro it was (2 yrs ago) it was such a mess and the fringe so uneven i took a scissors to it myself and went to a salon a few weeks later.
that being said i went to a hi end saalon several years ago thinking maybe ill get a really cool cut as im paying 80 (at the time a regular cut in peter mark for example - was 35) that turned out to be another cut i had to get dad to fix. youd need an armyload of product to keep it tamed.

most salons - at least highstreet ones - seem pretty unshakable on their prices though so you cant haggle based on having shorter hair etc. some of them even charge more for blow dry but wont let you leave the salon with wet hair. so you have to pay it. the pricing salons can have needs more regulating,

My hairdresser has unisex prices - they have a pricing structure that works out the price your hair cut is going to cost based on its length and the experience of the stylist. They actually give you a quote before they start cutting!

I have pretty long hair though so it doesn't help me in anyway. I'd be a big ugmo with shaved/very sort hair.
