I'm supposed to be away for the weekend, but this had me in stitches.

    http://www.shortnews.com/start.cfm?id=88432
The RIAA is asking for $75 trillion in damages from LimeWire for illegal file sharing and copyright infringement. Judge Kimba Wood has called the damage amount “absurd” and contrary to copyright laws.

Using a formula that multiplies the number of users involved by the number in infringements the total amount demanded by the RIAA could vary anywhere from $400 billion to $75 trillon.

"As defendants note, plaintiffs are suggesting an award that is ´more money than the entire music recording industry has made since Edison´s invention of the phonograph in 1877,´" Manhattan federal district court judge Kima Wood said.

Lets put this in perspective. Less than half the entire population of the world has internet. If they are claiming 75 trillion dollars in damages, and its about a euro a song, that equates to almost 40GB of pirated music in each of our computers for an average sized song (give or take 4-5mb)

The MAFIAA are such retards sometimes.

Calling them "retards" is immature, and suggests you may not have the firmest grasp when it comes to tactics in a legal process.

I would like to point out that this, indeed, is an epic fail.

    Feck the record industry

Limewires should be sued by their userbase for being such a crap piece of software (KaZaa and Bearshare were even worse mind)

In fact I wouldnt be suprised if all three were put out by the record industry to put people off filesharing

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,704 ✭✭✭squod

Every user on limewire should be suing the music industry for it's use of contractors and third parties to contaminate files with viruses then upload them onto the internets.

    Limewire users have the stupids..

They should sue The Internet instead, i hear everyone gets their music from there.

They should sue the radio stations for giving away free music

I wouldn't be surprised if the fucktards tried to sue an echo for sharing music.

It's no wonder I haven't bought any music for the past ten years.

What could you buy for 75 trillion dollars?

I'm firmly convinced, at this stage, they're just making up random figures and hoping one of them appears acceptable.

Agreed, very immature, however it should also be pointed out to you fine sir, this is the after hours forum and not the law forum.

I won't begin to describe what the tone of your post suggests about you

Perhaps in future you might reconsider your posting tactics and actually try and back up your point with relevant information pertaining to the discussion, rather than expecting everyone in the after hours forum to have a 'firm grasp' of the legal process.

So the output of Amy Whitehouse and Kanye West is worth a year and a half of the the worlds GDP?!?

    http://www.google.com/publicdata?ds=wb-wdi&met=ny_gdp_mktp_cd&tdim=true&dl=en&hl=en&q=world+gdp

I didn't know my ears were so privileged! Even if I poured liquid gold through them, I don't think I'd be getting my value according to the RIAA!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 377 ✭✭haydar

I thought the RIAA had disbanded!!!

What part of $75 trillion did you not understand?

Just for reference the GDP of the USA is $14 trillion. They are asking for that, 5 times over.
This is not just retarded, its breakneck retarded.

If you are serious, are they really the reason you don't pay for music or are you just rationalising?

Wondering if the Government will back them ? ( tax reasons ,of Course )

If you are serious, are they really the reason you don't pay for music or are you just rationalising?

    Reasons at a rough estimate:

40%.... I don't like being played for a mug (25 + Euro for a CD back in the day)

60%.... I'm a tight fucker (I have enough to pay for that I can't get out of, so anything I can, I will)

In case it was missed by some, Italy is now trying to sue Yahoo over the fact that some stuff can be found through their search engines!

    See: http://gigaom.com/2011/03/24/mamma-mia-italian-ruling-on-piracy-puts-websites-on-notice/

...So if Yahoo or Google search functions are too good, they are target possible for the companies to sue!
    More madness!

Of course it's just rationalising (not mikom specifically but generally). Lets face it CDs are much cheaper than they used be yet most of us probably download even more music nowdays.

Your not on your own. Lars and co lost a LOT of fans and he found that out quickly after he started the whole fiasco.

i don't pirate music .. i remix it .. at the beginning i say 'hey hey it's davo' and then at the end i say 'awhh yeah' .. that's fair usage ...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,783 ✭✭✭Hank_Jones

So basically, the music industry completely missed the boat on file sharing when it was started,
then had no control over how big it got and now want to sue people for outsmarting them.

Probably a bunch of CEO's in a room somewhere picking out yachts they are going to buy from the money they are looking to make.

Reminds me of Rupert Murdoch and Google.

Is it $75 trillion Narnian dollars they are suing for?
