Do I have to activate phone line for broadband

I was interested in getting Smart broadband to my home but they require a phone line.. We have a phone line but it is not activated.. Do we have to ring eircom to activate it and then do we have to pay a phone line rental charge to eircom for this or is activating the phone line free of charge??

If you ask Eircom to activate it for you they will tie you into a contract. If you are going with smart, get smart to activate the line for you.
