Bike stolen.......BAS**RDS

    Hi everybody,

Don't know if I'm in the right place, however I'll give it a go.

My bike was thieved on Saturday in Fairview, Dublin 3. It's been reported to the Gardai and I have CCTV footage which might help in the long run.

It's a Kona Paddy Wagon fixed wheel in very loud colours of green with orange wheels. 49 cm frame so very small and obvious also I haven't seen many around. If you see this possibly you could report it to Gardai or even the location to me as I would have no problem taking the law into my own hands on this one.

Picture of the bike below, not my own bike but you get the picture.

Would hugely appreciate any info. Thanks

sorry to hear that buddy seems there a lot of it about these days ,i've gotten to the stage i lock my bikes in the house, recently 9 houses have been done in my area in recent weeks, i would hate to think the bastards would be off with my bikes.
anyway i hope you get it back did you have it insured by any chance.

    Thanks for the reply.

Ye it was locked with a kryptonit mini evolution.

Now for the embarrassing part....it was locked to a fire exit bar on a door inside the smoking area of Smyths pub in fairview. The CCTV shows one bota coming along and entering the room obviously trying to steal it and giving up after about 2.5 mins and leaving making a phone call. 5 mins later his colleague arrives and spends 2 mins trying to break the lock before breaking the door and cycling of with the lock around the frame.

I actually had a cigarette in between theft attempts.

They stole the door to get your bike?

    Feck sake lads,

No they didn't steel the door they just broke the fire escape mechanism of it, you know those bars you push down to release the opening thingy.

Ah, right. I guess that proves that there's not really much point in using anything more than a Mini, since it's stronger than whatever you lock it to.

    Sorry for your loss!

take a trip down to sheriff st. I live in the North strand so I will keep my eye out for you.

    Morana,

Took a few trips down there already but you know yourself, they don't really talk out of school. Asked around a good bit, no sign of the bike but the same keeps cropping up as the local bike thief. Found his address and dropped down ready to go but his da (who claims he's IRA affiliated) told me his son's no thief. I dont even know what this punk looks like so it might be stakeout time.

Whats the story with that Kevins street thing. Can I just drop in and have a look around or do I have to wait for specific days?

Ye that seems to be the case. Ive seen the CCTV and they're certainly local lads. Also considering a phone call and 5 mins separated their attempts screams local to me.

Pay no attention. Its a gardai auction thats held every six months or so where you can buy bikes that nobody has claimed (because they're crap!). Go to the Gardai station (which I sure hope you have done) and claim it back if possible.

Don't know why anyone would consider buying back their stolen bike from the gardai:D

You dropped around to somebody's house ..... and explained to his father (who claims to be IRA affilliated) ..... that his son, who you understand is a well known bike thief, has probably stolen your bike ..... you're a braver man than me!!

Rubbish, I use a kryptonite, the above story just backs up my theory that they are unbreakable. They guy broke the door to take it, and the Mini Evolution isnt even the top lock in their range.

Doubt it, people dont go into pubs robbing bikes, this scumbag is probably gunna be back as he frequents the place, hes a local, his mate was close by, hes on camera. What better way to wait for a scumbag than with a Pint of guinness and plenty of witnesses.

Guess what???!!! They rob more ****e bikes than decent ones :o , They dont care, its called oppertunism.
Add the fact that crap bikes are crap, you will spend more fixing them, have a horrible time riding them , why?.

Do you have proof of this? I Love my sweeping statements too but, any scumbags Ive seen robbing or offerning, or asking me to fix have been born and bread Irish scumbags living off the dole and god knows what.

Its been moved to Merlin 2 years ago, also anybody who has been to one, will Im sure agree that all the bikes are ****e , which convinces me Bike thieves in general dont have a clue what they are robbing.

Just using this quote for something similar, my friends brother had a good bike robbed on him a few years ago, the guards recommended he try a certain place on Moore street to see if they had it, they did and he bought his own bike back. True story.*

*details may be a bit mashed in my memory but thats the gist of it...

I have proof they're breakable. My key broke in my lock a few years ago, had to get one of the maintainence guys in work to come over and cut the lock, on his third power tool he finally got through it.

My current kryptonite however, people have attempted to get through it a couple of times now and they've been unsuccessful. Luckily, your average scumbag doesn't carry power tools!

Hope your bike turns up network76, I can't imagine how you feel, I got back to work after a run one night last year to discover my bike hanging on the lock and the lock a bit battered(thank god for Kryptonite) soon as I saw my bike from a distance I knew something was up, when I got to it my heart sank at the thought of what could have happened.

 I'll settle for it standing up to two power tools, I think thats about good enough :D

Are you for real OP? I feel for you having your pride and joy stolen but the act of locking a bike to an Emergency Exit door is on a simililar plane to the perjury of the bike by whatever scum that took it.

Emergency doors must not be locked or fastened so that they
cannot be easily and immediately opened in an emergency and Emergency exits, and the traffic routes and doors
giving access to them, must be free from obstruction.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31 network76

The door is unused and left ajar so the bike wasn't causing an obstruction seamyorr, it was locked with the permission of the proprietors.

Eh, no it's not:rolleyes:. While I'm sure it wasn't the smartest thing the OP ever did, it wasn't dishonest scummy like the criminal who took it. Big difference imo

I thought that exact same thing, looks looks like it was copied and pasted from a safety site. It's a bit of a strange post to be honest. Why does he care about fire safety in this case?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 112 ✭✭seamy_orr

BTW It's legislation from the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 (S.I. No. 299 of 2007) and it's criminal for proprietors not to abide by it. I still find it hard to believe that a licenced establishment leaves it's doors ajar.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,525 ✭✭✭kona

Can we drop this H&S crap, yes it wasnt the smartest thing to block an emergency exit, however people do far far worse things on a daily basis and dont bat a eyelid. Locking a bike to the door is hardly on par with Mr Butterly and Stardust now is it?

A bike was robbed, Id like to get it back, and more people will read the read all the way through the less bollix there is in it.

IMO H&S in a cycling forum is bollix. :o

The fact is that most of these guys are dirtbags, junkies, alcos or whatever.
They don't see a bike and think, "Oh that looks good". All they see is, "That looks like I could take it".

When they get the bike, whether it's worth €100 or €1,000, they bring it to one of a few well known "shops" who give them €50 for it and the scumbag goes off to get some coke or heroin or 20 litres of their favourite cider. No doubt there's something of a scale on these things and the dirtbag who brings in a full carbon Madone gets €100 instead of €50, but by and large they're not fussy about what they take so long as it can be cycled.

    Network76.

I live around the corner from smyths and actually remember seeing your bike locked up against the door (the colour scheme is eye catching!), I remember thinking to myself that I'd never have thought of locking a bike like that and making a note it might be useful way of locking if I fancied a quick pint whilst out and about.

Unfortunately your story has served as a warning for me.

Hope you have some luck recovering it.

There are a few oppurtunistic thieves in the area all right - I had my place broken into a couple of months back and we reckon they spotted us coming out of the house with luggage so would have known the place was gonna be empty for the night / weekend

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31 network76

Thats what I thought faker74. The more I think about it I think the two lads beside in the pub watching the game were in on it. They were constantly on the phone and both the theft attempts happened in between me going for cigarettes, although I am concerned that this incident is taking over my life at the moment.

I'm walking or cycling around Fairview/East Wall/North Strand numerous times every day like a lunatic...... everybody is a suspect, every bike that goes past distracts me. I have the video of the theft and one of the thieves is quite recognizable, If I see him we're talking some serious medieval torture **** going down until I get this bike back.

Ah well we'll soldier on! Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31 network76

That exact thing happened to me by the way (I'm in the area), the weekend bag into the car and ransacked house on return. I knew who seen me leaving and gave them a knock with a few friends when I got back. Got nothing back although their wasn't much to steal but they subsequently left the area. They robbed many houses around the area, especially old people while they were at mass on Sundays. ****heads....I used to really enjoy living Marino/Fairview but lately there seems to be a lot of scumbags around the area. Probably the fall out from our decade of vacuous affluence.
