Our National Anthem

So a can of worms has been opened in the thread on last weekend's title fight in relation to Willie Casey allegedly disrespecting our national anthem by bouncing around etc while it was being played.

What are your opinions on Ireland's Call being played at every home international rugby match?

Personally I think its an absolute disgrace. It makes me sick when I see Ulster players not singing Amran na bhFiann and then singing Ireland's Call with gusto! I think it should be mandatory for sportspeople, no matter what the sport is, to sing the country's national anthem they are representing. If they don't want to sing it, they shouldn't be allowed play.

Agreed, Irelands Call is a bit of a joke.

Couldnt care less tbh, a lot of people who claim to want people to respect the anthem probably dont even know the words themselves aside from the first few lines.

Trimble is the only one of the Northern players who sings Ireland's Call:

I don't care if they pick their nose while the anthem is playing, as long as they give 100%.

Not really anything to do with Limerick - I can see this being moved to AH where its been discussed to death on there

So would you expect all the Irish Rugby players to sing God Save the Queen if an international was played in Belfast?

Having an expectation on fully grown men to sing any song is a bit absurd IMO.

Ulster players from NI don't sing Amhrán na bhFiann because it's not their national anthem.

The Irish rugby team represents all 32 counties. Some players on the team aren't from the ROI and so don't sing the national anthem. Plus it's not just the NI players that don't sing the national anthem.

I'd be very surprised if anyone ranting about the anthem could actually describe what the lyrics mean without using a translator.

Amran Na Bhfiann is th enational anthem of the republic of Ireland, not all of Ireland.

OUR national anthem is not THEIR national anthem.

Yep. They're representing the Island of Ireland.

It's going to be interesting when Rugby 7s gets put in the Olympics, as they'll have to decide what happens with the respective British and Irish teams. It could very well come down to a choice for the Northern Irish players and they'd have to stand to the Republic's anthem should we win gold. And if they go with the British team, they'd be separated from their normal team-mates and even playing against them.

    Nicked from Wikipedia:

    Soldiers are we,
whose lives are pledged to Ireland,
    Some have come
from a land beyond the wave,
    Sworn to be free,
    no more our ancient sireland,
Shall shelter the despot or the slave.
Tonight we man the gap of danger,
In Erin’s cause, come woe or weal,
’Mid cannon’s roar and rifles’ peal,
    We’ll chant a soldier's song

I cringe when I hear people Nag and go on about
respect for the National Flag and respect for the National Anthem. What exactly is the expectation of what or who are we are supposed to be respecting exactly ?

Just because were Irish we have to have some sort of
respect or blind allegiance to a bloody song! for **** sake
    were not neanderthal's

I'm Irish and if I stand up or sit down, sing a song, or not sing a song, know the words or don't know the words its
not gonna make a blind bit of difference in my life, and its
not going to make me more or less proud of whatever the hell I'm expected to be proud about in the first place?
A lot of military types or ex-military types seem to be brainwashed into blindly thinking the
Irish flag an inanimate object is some sort of godly like object that if it touches the ground its sacrilege. Same goes for the National Anthem where everyone has to stand to attention wherever the hell you are and regardless of its context.

Why is the National Anthem played at Boxing Matches,
Football or Rugby in the first place??? it does not need to be played. The game/match would be played the same
if the song was never played through speakers or sang by some dude that gets hired simply to sing the anthem.
There is no need for it, it serves no practical function.

Hoardes of Drunk Piss heads in a Pub pissed out of their minds drunk watching some sporting event on the telly and they all stumble onto their feet to blabber some words to a song that they probably only know the first line or two to, before the start to mumble every other line.

And there is always some eejit that get aggravated and try's to force everyone else to stand up, put their hands on their heart and start singing!

What If I wasnt Irish but was supporting an Irish team, or Irish sports person.
(or non sports person insert whatever) would I still be expected to mouth off a few words
of a song and stand up? If I was not Irish and national anthem was being played does
that mean I can stay sitting down? what Pride would be expected of me?

    ~B

Also, anyone who doesn't stand to attention and sing the anthem when it's played at the end of the night in a country 'niteklub' should be tarred and feathered.

Ah jaysus, that's a dour dirge of a thing.

    My list of Six Nation's anthems from best to worst is;

    1.) French National Anthem
2.) Scottish National Anthem (Well, Flower of Scotland anyway [and it goes to the number one position if I'm drunk and in a pub, all the better if there's some Scots I can cajole into singing it.])
    3.) Italian National Anthem
    4.) Welsh National Anthem
    5.) Irish National Anthem
    6.) English National Anthem
    7.) Ireland's Call

Although I have heard that Ireland's Call is popular with non-Irish people. They seem to like a simple basis for anthems, and you can't get more simple than yelling Ireland a few times over.

OP, add a poll to see how many people actually know the words for Amhran na bhfiann

Taken from the Wayne McCullough wiki page
The medal ceremony for his Commonwealth title was marked by an unusual incident. A technical problem with the public address system made it impossible to play the recording of the Northern Ireland anthem, Londonderry Air. The New Zealand official in charge of the sound, Bob Gibson, promptly jumped into the ring, took the microphone and sang the anthem unaccompanied, using the politically neutral lyrics to "Danny Boy", normally sung to the same tune

At least Ireland's Call is slightly better then Danny Boy.

I prefer Amhran na bhFiann (spelling?) to be honest. It's more rousing, particularly the last 2 lines.

God Save The Queen's the most dirgy, miserable song around (after anything by Coldplay and Morrisey)

Right, good point. I think Irish people should just subserviently lay down in front of their English masters in future whenever they see them. They're impure and nothing will change that, after all.

Irelands call is a disgrace. If the rugby team is all Ireland why do they wear only green and stand only under the Irish flag? Why isnt there a compromise flag for the comrpomise "Island of Ireland team". I will tell you why becase somebody got on their pc highorse found offence where there was none (doubt any players from the north kick up a fuss over A na Bhf). They seem to have no problem standing under an Irish flag wearing green. Its typical of this country that it doesnt have the self confidence to say no to a small minority the French wouldn do it for the Basque minority in their country why should we? PC world gone mad. Not even a good song.

The flag they play under is the IRFU flag. Link to it here http://flagspot.net/flags/ie@irfu.html

The flag of the Republic is also flown at matches in the Republic, just as the Northern Irish flag is flown at any Irish games played in the North. AnbhF is played as a courtesy when games are played in the Republic. Theoretically God Save the Queen should be played when Ireland plays in the North, but to save the sensibilities of the players and fans from the Republic, that doesn't happen, a similar sensibility isn't shown the Northern Irish players or fans when they play in the Republic.

Edit: Also the French don't do anything for the Basque people because there is no Basque country. There is France and there is Spain. Although a lot of rugby fans do come from the Basque region, with Munster previously having played a French team in San Sebastian. Although there were no anthems, the Basque flag was flown.

I seen something in relation to the welsh national anthem being learned off in the players.

Then Sky Sports showed only a handful of English players singing God save the Qu.... whatever they call her anyway. Really must be boring if even they don't learn it off.

Under Jackies era, a fellow sent in a copy of the Irish national Anthem and they learned it off. It is a disgrace for anyone wearing the Green shirt not able to sing the national anthem that comes with it.

Fans see it as pride the player have for the shirt. Notice how hard it was sung before the England match. Hairs stand up on the of your neck.

Also Seeing Willie Casey moving around during the natonal anthem was a disgrace indeed. He sttod still for awhile, only a few more seconds to go in it and then he did the best moving he did the whole night, some shadow boxing.
