Not sure if it should be in this forum or the fitness one so mods please feel free to move.

I am trying to lose weight at the moment - 10 pounds lost ( maybe) many more pounds to go.

I weighed myself yesterday and was happy with the results. I weighed myself at the same time today ( I know you shold weight yourself too often but wanted to check something i forgot yesterday) and I was THREE pounds heavier than I was yesterday.

    Surely this cant be possible???

I ate a big lunch yesterday for sure, but i also did a good session in the gym so while i wouldnt have expected to lose weight i would never have expected to put on three pounds.

Can anyone shed some light on this - and possibly cheer up and very depressed dieter this Monday morning!

Depends on what time of day you're weighing, what water intake and food intake you've had etc

If you weigh yourself don't do it every day and do it at the same time of day as before

+1, and if possible get your skinfolds/bodyfat checked too, it's a far better indication of fat loss.

+1 to all of the above, do not weigh yourself everyday as you will only go mental!

Pick a time each week and measure your skinfolds with calipers as well, or even tape measurement.

Personally I use to weigh myself every Thursday morning before work - put me in a good mood to maybe treat myself over the weekend and give me enough time then during the week to work it off ;)

Forgive my ignorance but how do you do this?

yeah our weight will fluctuate every day. youll only go mad if you do it every day cos even if you weigh yourself at the same time every 24 hours your weight can fluctuate because of like bluewolf said water intake etc. and another thing - the more active we are the lighter we feel because you sort of 'walk off' the excess water or gas etc, its a small thing but it affects you every day

The link below should be a good explanation on how to do it. Most people will say you need someone else to do it for you to be accurate but I found that if I kept on doing it myself week in week out and the numbers were going down that was the main thing!

You can't really do your skinfolds yourself, it's basically pinching your skin with a pair of callipers to measure the fat mm's, you do it in a few specific areas each time to get an overall average or bodyfat %.

You should weigh yourself once a week. I don't weigh myself on Mondays as I'm normally a couple of pounds heavier then because I may have been out for dinner or drinks on the weekend. When you do weigh yourself try do it early in the morning, after you have a shower or something. If you weigh yourself while naked, you won't have the added weight of clothes.

My friend swears that if she hasn't used the toilet before she weighs herself, then she's a couple of pounds heavier. I don't know if that would make a difference but it might be something to keep an eye on and see.

She's not alone, the queues for the toilet at a Weight Watchers weigh in used to be long!

I do weigh myself every day at roughly the same time, but I accept that the scales will fluctuate sometimes by several pounds. I prefer to take an average of a few days before I get upset about it though. I know when I've been good or bad and it isn't always reflected on the scales (for example gaining muscle or retaining water, or being dehydrated). If you look at it as your only indicator of success then I'd probably agree with the once-a-week suggestions.

So it isnt just me!!! Thank you.

Anyway, not weighing myself again until the weekend. I have set a target of losing 3lbs by Friday week so hopefully I will be well on the way by this weekend.

    Then 37lbs to go :(

Targets are good but don't get too cut up if you dont hit them, as long as you are losing every week it will all add up.

I was over 21 stone a couple of years back and have since dropped over 7.5 stone. Some weeks I lost, some weeks I gained, just keep at it.

Weigh yourself at the same time once a week and you should see results as long as you aren't cheating. Weighing yourself every day will only make you obsesses more about what your eating.
