earls get the nod from me. o'brien gave away a lot of penalties over the course of the competition, although i guess thats to be expected when you're involved in the thick of everything as he was.

Ross, for nearly single-handedly turning our scrum into a weapon. Tighthead remains one of, if not the, most important position on a rugby field.

Mention for SOB(obviously), DOC, Best and Reddan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,238 ✭✭✭Gelio

O Brien, Earls and Ross (and today Sexton) stood up and made a statement. BOD played up to his own incredible standards. Wallace really stood out today. Its also easy to forget how young Healy is for a prop and he has been solid around the field and when with Ross great in the scrum. Luke fitz had a bad tournament kicking far to much and not bringing a great deal to the table. Age is catching up on D'Arcy but he still gives it his all. ROG is also playing world class, its great to have him and Sexton because we can change our entire style of play in one substitutuion. Finally, Paddy Wallace is not up to international standard!

    Too much effort :P

Anyway off to spend my winnings.

It looks like Ferris has lost his place though?

Sob will walk this poll. The best player in the HC and translated that form to the 6N. He was a revelation. Dont count the penalties against him because he was our most aggressive forward and gained the most yards

agree with sob being the best player, but believe ross has been the most important player.

    +1

Hats off to the guys today, they proved a point, now if they can be more consistent!

For anybody who has voted for Mike Ross, be aware George Hook has just named Ross as his player of the championship. Want to change your vote lads...? :D

Jamie Heaslip for me. Totally accept the O' Brien votes, but I just think Heaslip is currently one of the best players in the world.

I'm going to go with Mike ross, purely for the difference he has made in our scrum. Phenomenal, he doesn't make great bursts, doesn't top the table in tackle counts but he can sure as **** scrummage and that's what we need. Followed very closely by SOB, he's one tough SOB.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,214 ✭✭✭wonton

    Cian Healy
well I voting with the mindset of most important, which Is why I voted for Ross.

Its really incredible the differrence he has made in the scrum.

Lets be honest, there is a much bigger difference in the gap between ross and court(or buckley) than sob and ferris.

and I know he did get a line out today, but we slightly loose out there when ferris isnt on.

    kind of off topic.. but

have ferris and sob played each other in the provinces? that would be one hell of a battle.

Unsung hero is Rory Best, his workrate is awesome.

O'Brien the best player by some distance.

SOB imo, he kept his performance level high over all 5 games. Other guys had some very good games and some fairly quiet games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,787 ✭✭✭d-gal

Honorable mention for POC as well, coming back to international level after such a long lay off and his workrate was immense, constantly involved in the dirty work and really led his pack well.
Earls was impressive and Wallace proved he is still worth his weight in gold.

O'Brien was unbelievable in the loose but the penalty count was so high against him.

i'd go with sob for the same reasons danthefan has

    Brian O'Driscoll
Tight call between O'Brien, Ross and Wallace. Voted for Wallace as SOB had a fairly high penalty count (which relative to his work rate is tiny I know), and Ross just doesn't seem to have 80 mins in him.

SOB was an absolute revelation this tournament, he's definitely our man to watch. But I think Wallace just pulled an amazing tournament out of the bag just when people were writing him off.

I think Earls was pretty magnificent in the Championship. For me he approached the maximum of what he's capable of more than any other Irish player. He should be delighted with himself.

    Best Player: SOB

    Most Important Player: Ross

    Most improved: Best

    Best young player: SOB

    Best forward SOB

    Best back: Draw between BOD/Earls

Best unit: Draw front row/back row

Special mentions too to DOC and Wallace who surprised me with some excellent performances. Heaslip has come on immensely since returning wit some nice offloading against England in particular.

Best has always been that good but is often wrongly faulted for lineout woe's and oddly questioned about his carrying ability.

SOB, with Wallace, Earls, Bowe and Ross all close behind.
Thought Bowe has been fantastic, and would have pushed SOB if he was injury free.

SOB for me - he's immense when he comes on to the ball at pace.
Ross - most important player in years, our scrum immediately fell to bits when he went off yesterday.
I think Earls has had an ok tournament never really looking at easy - but he was really up for it yesterday, and since the English failed to test him under a high ball he really took to the 15 shirt.

I have to say as good as Sexton was yesterday, you have to hand it to ROG, he gave a masterclass when he came on and has pulled it out of the bag many times in the past as well as this tournament ( btw, I am a Sexton man, prefer the rugby we play with him on ).

sean o brian was incredible. he was a human recking machine with incredible pace and power, just the way he was able to barge through men was some sight! BOD had a good campaign too, mike ross was also very good, it will be intresting to see what happens when stephen ferris comes back and how kidney will pick the squad!

Only downside for SOB is the pen count. That can be fixed though. People starting to think he and Heaslip should switch positions.

And Best, although he played well, particularly latterly, gave away one or two very kickable pens too.

Wallace will be seven for the world cup now.

Ferris? Well he needs to get back playing before even being considered. it sounds like he'll miss the HEC qf now, so he'll struggle to show himself between now and the WC.

At this stage he wont be in the starting 15, because the incumbent seems to always get the benefit of the doubt, unless there is a galactico returning. Or Tomas O Leary.

Very unfortunate for Ferris because he's pure class but you can't drop SOB.

Ferris off the bench at 60minutes could be lethal.

With all his injuries, the cotton wool approach of giving him 20mins as opposed to 80 to be destructive and damaging and lethal might not be a terrible ploy.

Ferris on the bench could be an incredible impact sub.

    What a bizarre sentence tbh.

SOB and Wally were the increasingly visible stars closely followed by DOC but for holding the scrum together under enormous pressure in the press and on the field Mike Ross is a quiet star for me.

Agree that SOB was the stand out player for Ireland.
ROG should also get a mention.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12 liquidbob

Was surprised to see no mention of ROG , thought he was excellent every time he played.

Voted for Ross , not the most visible but just based on the difference between him being on the pitch and off it highlights how good he is at his job.

At the start of the 6Nations, I remember Hook writing an article in the independent where he labelled Ross as a journeyman that would not cut it at international level. I wonder would he admit his mistake now :D
The forwards too give cause for concern. Finally, Tony Buckley has been exposed and John Hayes, at an age when he should have his feet up in front of a fire, is asked to perform a job that he can no longer accomplish, which seems to indicate that Mike Ross is now the frontrunner for the number three shirt. Ross is no wunderkind at the scrum. He is a journeyman in his 30s who failed to convince Kidney at Munster and Dean Richards at Harlequins

And IIRC, Dean Richards held him in the highest regard and was saying that he should be getting runs in the Ireland team.

Ross - maybe not the "best" but certainly the most important player for us.
