Can someone explain this for me,

I remember there was a thread about the Holocaust or something and people were questioning it. I'm sure a lot of these people were bored in work or kids looking for a bit of attention maybe. 99% it obviously did happen and deniers are ****ed in the head. So a little bit of me has doubt after seeing all the websites and vast amount of material there is on it which has been pointed out to me by such people. Very little by the way but it's there anyway. So if I post a thread expressing such a controversial view on it and that I really deep down don't believe it and I explain this in my post and ask for how other people view the matter. Would this be trolling?
I often have two or more opinions on something so what's wrong with that?

It depends. If it was something like "your thoughts on the Holocaust" then it would be fine if you stated it from a neutral point of few. Saying it like "The Jews are known to be liars and sneaky, obviously it didn't happen" is quite clearly trolling. You might honestly believe that but certain opinions should be phrased differently.

Anyway, if you said something like "I don't belive it happened" but didn't go on to make it out like you're 100% correct and anyone who believes it is wrong, then it should be okay.

It's really just about how you phrase certain opinions.

IMO there are at least two types of "trolling" on Boards.

    1. The proactive deliberate kind, described above.

    2. The inferred kind, in which certain people in certain forums decide you are trolling because you have just posted something they don't like the look of.

The Art of trolling is dead tbf.

Now "trolls" are generally just stupid people on the internet. People dont really cop on that others could be so stupid and hence just call them trolls.

I used to be a troll, it was great fun.

I used to make post that I knew would ire some people and then reply to spark the flames, however, in most cases the resultant fighting was so funny that I was splitting my sides and crying with laughter so much that I could not post.

My those days were fun. I also had multiple accounts and I'd answer myself and I'd have posters taking sides and shouting at one of me and supporting the other ~ it was really mad altogether.

The whole point is to say something to outrage the forum, the most obvious type would be to say Manchester United was rubbish in the Manchester United Forum.

A good troll would have articles and wiki links to supports his view and this would often give authority to his trolling and people would participate, much tot he delight of the troll.

When other posters would start fighting would be the ultimate highlight of a good troll post. I can't tell you how easy it is to get people worked up, TBH most of my trolling was accidental trolling as I tend to have wide interests and diverse viewpoint anyway, so a lot of narrow-minded people could not understand what I'd have said. This was often a perfect opportunity to troll as the poster would have exposed his or her weakness to me. :) Fiendish, isn't it?

Another is when a poster displays total ignorance of a subject and I'd draw him out, pretending to agree with his views and he's be eating out of my hands.

Trolling was great fun but it ran it's course. IP tracking and other id methods made it all too easy to search out trolls so I gave it up.

Trolling would have a side effect too obviously as one could not have a serious discussion as the troll hunters would come with their fiery lance and shout Troll and post every every single thing you ever put on he internet, ever. My but these people were more desperate than the trolls themselves and often had to be banned outright while the reformed troll would stay on the site. I think these troll hunters were seriously imbalanced mentally, I had to call the guards in over threats to life and property and action was taken.

But the best thing to do to a troll is just ignore him or her, mostly males but some of the very, very, very best trolls I've known were women, and whilst it's five years since I gave up trolling, I do pop back to my old hunting grounds from time to time and this very famous female troll is still talked about ~ despite her being permanently banned and very well recognised.

I sure if she is reading this she's still laughing. A troll lives for reaction, if you think you're being trolled, just don't answer.

Note to mods: If in the wrong place, could you move it please... thanks

I know this is a stupid question, but I've seen people being accused of trolling in different forums, and as I'm probably as thick as sh1te I need it explained. I actually just don't get what the hell it is. Even in examples I don't really get it. So can someone please explain to me, like I'm a child EXACTLY what it is. I could have done it, and just didn't realise I did it.:confused::confused:

I think the easiest description is when someone just posts a whole bunch of (usually stupid) stuff looking for a reaction because they know they'll get it.

Usually they'll get a high number of posts in a short time since they just keep on digging away at topics to get the reaction they want. Sometimes they'll start topics which are controversial or designed to get a reaction from people. Sometimes they'll play the sweet innocent card to get lots of replies and support but never stop digging away at it.

It might be trying to get the reaction from one person or the whole message board.

That would be the original meaning of a troll... I see a bunch of people have just made up the definition of troll to define someone they dislike on a forum, thats incorrect. And calling someone you dislike, a troll, which by definition is designed to get a reaction out of that person.... which is in fact... TROLLING on the accusers part!!!

Anyone who takes a peek at politics.ie will know of Cael whom I believe is the greatest troll in this fair country.

Here's a good example of one of his threads, In Defense of Comrade Stalin. His justifications get better and better, he 'believes' that the Irish landowners, ie farmers, are worse than drug dealers and rapists etc etc. But just look at the reactions he gets, hats off :D

    Not cool.

Because internet RIP "memorials" are pathetic.

Just like when some z list celebrity dies and you have a thread on boards where idiots chant RIP, in order to make themselves feel profound and have a little circle **** of feigned grief for a person they didn't even know.
