We may as well admit it, we'd be better off still living under the crown. Sure we read British bloody newspapers, avidly watch British television, buy anything and everything in British shops and avidly support British football clubs. Not to mention the fact that under British rule that shower of traitors in Fianna Fail wouldn't have had the chance to plunge us into civil war, and let's not mention the rest...

Apologies but I find the whole 'be proud to be Irish' bull that always comes around this time of year to be complete and utter bollox.

Why should I be proud to be part of a tinpot island off the west coast of Europe who's main claim to fame is to be a nation of 'craic' loving alcoholics.

No I'm not proud, in fact I'm bloody ashamed.

Given all of the American crap you buy, shouldn't you be the 51st state? An island nation with weird corporate tax policies and a stagnant economy: you would be like another Puerto Rico (well, except for the whole tropical paradise thing). Viva los irlandeses!

Terrible thread, where the feck do you self hating ******'s come from?

Read a history book, the amount of Irish that died and suffered under British rule is unreal.

As ****ed as we are we're still one of the top nations on this planet to live in and we've been far better off as a country free from the UK. Just cause things are "hard" now.

Also with your logic sure we may as well all join the american empire, UK included since we watch so many american movies.

Ashamed? Ashamed we didn't militarily rape half the planet? The hell is wrong with people like you...

Perhaps we should, hell knows we surely are incapable of looking after ourselves.

Ah I'm just sick of the hipocracy that most Irish people seem to live there lives by. Perhaps the fact that I'm just home from a pub full of plastic ra men may have coloured my somewhat cynical and bitter view of this island most of us live on.

    We're far from friendly,
    we're very expensive,
we have have really bad weather,
    boring unimpressive scenery,
backwards laws on alcohol, drugs, blasphemy, assault and driving etc.
and the nightlife is crap because 3/4's of the country won't talk to anyone outside their group.

We let scumbags on full welfare with 50 convictions walk out of the courtroom, there's no jobs and the educated are leaving. We have no way of getting out of this situation because all our competitive advantages are gone, we have a weak government, alot of negative equity and our population is growing older.

I could go and on and on and on about Ireland but I'm still proud of the country because of it's past.. People love the Irish but a snapshot of the country at the moment leaves much to be desired. If it weren't for history and we were rated as a country right now, who in there right mind would love us and celebrate paddy's day all around the world.

Nah Ads by google's comments might be harsh but I'd generally agree with him, Irelands not perfect at all. Still far too religious, equal rights issues still not addressed and hell abortion isnt even in. So theres still a few backwards things about this country.

Also if your not mad into sports and pubs or clubs socialising can be hard, and theres attitudes between irish men and irish women that need to be addressed.

The unfriendly thing is only true in some places, we can be very friendly still.

But there's plenty of great and fantastic things about Ireland and the irish people and no justification for self hating.

Being able to point out faults but still be proud is a positive thing.

    **edit**

I do disagree with the scenery comment too, we've some fantastic scenery actually.

Anyhoo, getting serious here people. One thing that I have noticed since the recession has started to bite is a lot of Irish folk who seem to enjoy running down this fine country of ours. Sure some mistakes have been made in the last few years but who hasn't?

I'm proud to have all the quirks that make an Irishman an Irishman and sure if we were still under the crown sure we'd be worse than the bloomin Welsh.

Anyway thanks for making a slightly tipsy man chukle and win a few euro.

I'm going to open your eyes and give you a little education on the city you live in.

Dublin is divided into South and North by the River Liffey (that's the big watery thing that runs under O Connell bridge). "South Dublin" is not a lifestyle or a social status.

You are the epitome of the bad stereotype that southsiders get labelled and if it is anything that makes me ashamed to be Irish it is ignorant, condescending attitude like yours.

Ah it was one of those things that were born in the pub, I believe the topic of fishing came up and a debate as to what the best kind of bait to use arose.

I offered the example of starting a slightly controversial thread on AH and see how quick I could have gotten a few sharp replies to it, suffice to say I have a nice blue picture of a bridge currently living in my wallet thanks to it;)
