My friend got spat on while cycling by summerhill a few days ago by a guy in his late teens, What is wrong with people here. It was a completely unprovoked attack, even animals wouldn't do that! It makes me ashamed to be Irish at times, My friend is indian and he sometimes does get racism here directly and indirectly. There is many lowlifes in this small space, this small city with a population of over a million. I think they should be sent to poor countries like africa and india and south america for a few months to let them see what life is, to let them see who they are because throwing them in jail isn't the solution or they should have have to go to army camp because they don't know the basics to treat others how you want to be treated.

That has nothing to do with Dublin, it happens down the country too. I put it down to lack of education but thats just a guess.

That's a question that is really hard to answer.

Probably because they are just d1ckheads, following the crowd. It's not just in Dublin though, you will pretty much find that in every capital city in the world, you find your clique and you stick with it, even if that means being a spanner.

It's the pack animal thing. As we get older we go to specific pubs and clubs and mix with like minded people, as teenagers we hang around looking to get ourselves into trouble. Doesn't stop them from being douchebags, but unfortunately there is probably no definitive answer.

I'm sorry your friend was attacked. Is he ok?

Ireland in general is choc full of worthless scum like that, I'd sooner shed a tear over the death of a disease-ridden rodent than any of these oxygen thieves.

Absolutely nothing you can do except try to ignore it as best you can.

    Or just leave.

Well i know but those places like that would mostly have incidents of theft or gangland things. i would rather get my money stolen than get spat at. That is the lowest of the low to spit at someone. It wouldn't be as bad as if they had asked you for money. Those city's population are 6 or 7 times that of Dublin's population, its weird for such a small city to have this much nastiness

'Gangland things' like mass gang shootings, tying bombs around peoples necks and setting them off.....

They party even harder in Mexico...

And then theres what happens when a lower caste group gets 'above themselves' in parts of rural india....

People generally don't leave the poorer areas of dublin, theres little upward mobility, chances that hottie in the next road is in your family tree, IQ has fallen due to inbreeding.

Is it a social norm to get spat on anywhere in the world. Well what difference does nationality make? it just makes me sick to hear another person doing that to someone else. Get a punch or your money stolen would be more decent

Oh please, I've been spat on for not giving junkies 50c, and I'm a 5 foot nothing Irish girl. Scumbags are everywhere, they're not just a Dublin exclusive.

Obviously she hasn't! She doesn't live a decent area! I mean just the other day walking through the poshest area of all, I had my face punched 5 times and my money stolen, I was very happy to thank the fellow that did it because he didn't spit in my face!

    You obviously don't travel much.

Their are worse things you can do to someone and they happen all over the world. Trust me on this. Big cities, little cities, villages. Remember Hungerford? Dunblayne? Columbine?

Alright, I'll be sure to go to America, get shot five or six times and thank them since gangland shootings are common place in the poorer areas there but I bet you they say "I'd rather get shot ten times than spat at, it's why I love my home and will never leave".

Grow up, your friend got spat at, boo-hoo. It's not like he/she got a knife in the chest or a bullet to the head or a hiding. Then again I suppose that's much more polite?

They are kind of different, a rare event.
It's hardly fair to tar a place purely because a massacre/mass shooting occurred there, it could easily happen here. They are rare and perpetrated by an individual or a very small group.

Weren't the last couple of school shootings in 'more respected' small towns in Norway and Germany?

Well the nazis were force to in to hitler's army most of them, they had not much of a choice. I don't think people from marginalised areas have much choice either, by what is spitting at someone going to do?

The thing is, in the US, those neighborhoods are not in the city center, they are more on the edges. Dublin seems weird because you have a significant skanger element in what are essentially high-rent commercial districts. Chicago is a far more dangerous city than Dublin, but Dublin City Center feels far more anarchic - more sketchy people/junkies/feral children and fewer cops - than Chicago's city center.

The respect they get in their peer group is inversely proportional to how big a maggot they act towards people outside of their group. The effect would be therefore be amplified in larger cities and poorer areas where you will tend to have larger groups and I can grantee you it isn't just a Dublin or Irish phenomenon.

On the brighter side of things, when these people get older and drift apart generally speaking most of them become decent members of society. Of course unfortunately some of them also tend towards drugs, homelessness and crime.

Long term I think the only solution would be to find a way to bring shame instead of respect onto people who act like this. Unfortunately I think the child protection laws (which are good in general) run in direct opposition to this.

That's all very well Rose but what your experience is lacking is the context of it being just one person's experience and therefore isn't really grounds for making vast generalisations.

Yea i know for a fact he was irish and stuff was shouted at him with a strong dublin accent.

Would it be the norm to see a foreigner like a chinese or foreigner national spitting at someone?

Yea, well those people don't behave like Irish people at all, that would be a very very rare occurence in Cork, Donegal or Galway. It's hard to believe Galway and Dublin are in the same country

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 9,441 ✭✭✭old hippy

The law of averages dictates that most threads unrelated to nazis end up mentioning nazis or Hitler.

Is Dublin worse than anywhere else? Depends on how much bad stuff happens to the individual.

I've been mugged twice in Dublin, had knives pulled on me about 5 times, been beaten up 5 times. Not all at the same time, mind. But most of that happened when I was a teen/early 20s and was instigated, for the most by people of a similar age.

All that testosterone can lead to some unpleasant situations. The world over.

I see your point but... I think it's because pretty much anything of use in terms of clubs and whatnot is in the town. I live about 5 minutes from O'Connell street and hear kids 14/15 at 2am drunk outta their heads and smashing bottles but it's only because nobody really gives a damn.
The City Centre is sort of a ghetto in itself but because there are a lot of places that are useful here, it's a high rent like area.

just ogre-like bufoons that fail to channel envy correctly; often converting to snide / aggression

Normal? It's not normal but it would happen in their own countries.
Scumbags tend not to be the ones who move to new pastures.

Comparing the behavior of local scumbags vs non nationals who have moved abroad is not good.
