Sore calves when running

    Hi,

Started back doing some outdoor running in the past month or two (after taking a break over the Winter). But recently I've started to get really sore calves while running. It's been getting worse the past few weeks, outdoors and on the treadmill. It usually starts after about 2 miles and is like a throbbing pain which can sometime shoot up into my hip. I usually have to stop as I can't carry on with the pain. Never had this problem last year but is really bad at the mo.
Anyone else experience this? Not sure if its my runners (which are less than 1 year old), posture or both.
Thinking of booking into the Physio clinic for a proper gait analysis but if anyone has any tips or experience of the same, would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Book into a physio anyway.

Yeah I had something similar last year on the treadmill. It was a deep throbbing pain which one evening became really sharp and I thought I felt something twang in my calf. I had to rest up for a month or so but was fine afterwards. I haven't had it since and I've no idea what caused it.

I've changed my style now to do more sprints and less steady pace. I don't know if thats the reason but it seems to have helped.

I'd agree it's worth getting checked out. Good luck.

You should probably visit a physio.

I did a marathon a while back, when I started training for it, I had this exact problem. Would run for 2-3 miles, then calves would tighten up, sometimes feet would go numb. Initially I thought it was my runners, so I got Gait Analysis done, didnt solve the problem.

I went to the physio, a combination of foam rolling my calves, stretching them daily and strenghtening them (negative calf raises) eventually solved the problem. Everytime I went up a flight of stairs I stretched them.

I eased off running on the road, only ran on the beach and on grass for a couple of months, upping the mileage gradually. I eased back in to running on the road and a few months later ran a marathon without any pain.

Could be your running style, landing toes/ball of the foot first puts more pressure on the calf muscles.

If that's not it please ignore:)

If that sounds like you maybe try landing mid foot.

Is it muscle pain or cramps? If its the later its likely your mineral/electrolyte status is out. If not then yeah a physio to make sure all is ok as tight muscles just get tighter creating a pull causing injury.
