I just did a -n 100 ping onto google.ie in command prompt, ended up with:

    min: 8ms
    max: 30ms
    average: 11ms

Still have to wait until games with a ping of <80ms before I get in though, frustrating!

Everyone should bear in mind that testing your ping from your comp to anywhere on the net is a good rule stick for QOS on your comps connection , routing and bandwidth BUT with the way COD is set up thats all it is... a rule stick.

Take what your saying for example, while your cmd test will show good average ping times to google bear in mind pinging google.ie will e testing your tcp settings frm comp through your wlan - from there to your modem to headend including routing / bandwidth / snr levels etc. Hence your discrepancy between your cmd pings and average ping time on COD games.

Clearest eg of this is that there is no game on cod with a ping level set lower than 50ms. The reason for this is that the global average ping would be in or around 30-40ms (basd on most early / mid level bb infrastructures) so set the bar slightly above the average then artificially slow everyone to 50ms to make the playing field as even as poss. Even though you may be able connect with others (based on geographical location and time of day) that have a ping less than 50 ms theservers are looking to get the most people together that can also be adjusted correctly to level them out whilst minimizing server load from the action of leveling them out.

Its basically setting up a race and assigning appropriate handicaps to each runner bsed on their performance to give a level field for all. There is no point adding someone with a real world ping of 10ms to a game of people with a real world ping of 100ms. The servers need to constantly slow the packets for that one player whilst monitoring the rest to ensure someones connection doest suddenly get much better, lowering their ping and giving an unfair advantage. It will look for the closest group of naturally occurring ping times and gather them together as it means less computing power if they are naturally close times from player to player.

There are ways around this also like attempting to artificially create large amounts of traffic on your network giving the servers the impression that your naturally occurring ping is higher than what it actually is, when the game starts you then stop flooding the network and in turn your ping dramatically gets better leaving you with an unfair response time. If the servers are working correctly and monitoring traffic well they should see this and kick you to another game with an average ping for other players more on par with yours. Worth bearing in mind there will be a grace time in that monitoring to allow for non user interference with the ping like SNR variance for example.

In short while your ping may be poor or great on non dedicated server games there is no real control over this relation to your game as so much of the variable calculation is handled by the server rule set.

Thanks for that! I don't really get networking and all that, but had a suspicion it wasn't as simple as checking your ping time. Lot of interesting information in that post, cheers man!

We've no access to UPC out in the outback which is apparently where I live, so stuck with Errorcom for the last number of years. Consistant but slow internet speed and terrible customer service.

Signed up with Vodafone (for a "guaranteed" increase in internet speed).. should kick in in the next few days. Any sh*te outta them and it'll be straight back to Eircom..

Not really, he would be undercut by anyone with a better consistent ping so if someone joined the game with a 10mb line but a consistent ping of say 10ms then they 'd be host for sure.

Bandwidth for gaming isnt a priority, in fact anything above 3mb will only actually be used but your ping is top dog, lower ping always wins out over bandwidth for server rules in gaming.

Now THATS a good gaming connection right there, next to no jitter and a nice low ping. Excellent.

And it's with vodafone which is strange. I never heard anything too great about their internet. You must live in their headquaters :D

With ADSL its all about how close you are to the exchange, judging by those stats he'd fair close

is the jitter how much the ping changes or ?

Haha, I know! :) Although if I have a bad game, I can't blame anything but myself now

Definitely re ping, would love a lower one but I'm happy with what I've got!
Is upload speed a big draw for getting host?

Not especially tbh, Your not uploading a lot of data at all. Your xbox is only sending very small amounts or data but it does have to get back and forth very quickly hence ping being more important than bandwidth in gaming.

Thats it exactly. Its the level of variation from ping to ping, the less jitter the more consistent ping times you have. The more consistent your ping the better your viewed as a potential host from the server rules side.

I got a result last night of 69% package loss, 1700ms ping and 500ms jitter which I was about to post but my internet went down before I could.

Jaysus! , get on to VF about that asap. Bet your seeing pages randomly takes ages to load and / or timing out too? Having to reload pages to try and get them back?

Just rule out any wifi issues by testing again on direct connection to your modem and disable the wifi card in the comp, still seeing the same issue then give 'em a shout asap more than likely a severe line issue mate.
