Just how healthy would a roll from a deli be?

Okay basically, I've been eating less takeaways (yay me :P) and have been wondering since I never really like eating a dinner would saying eating two normal rolls from a deli in a day with ham, cheese (grated), turkey slices and butter be the same as say... a snack box from a chip shop or would it be a lot less unhealthy eating the rolls instead.

By not eating a dinner, I meant I don't like the whole thing of "meat, potatoes, vegatables" and would just rather grab two rolls or something during the day, since I dislike large meals.

So, any advice/things to say? :o

You regularly have 2 rolls a day? Does it not get expensive?

You could just have a smaller dinner if you don't like big meals?

I don't think they're great, the stuff seems to be very processed, esp the meat. You should start cooking! fruit, veg, healthy carbs (wholegrain), quality meat

Maybe get a snacks cook book? There's loads you can make but it's not really stuff you can use an umbrella term for like "salads" or "soup" so your prob best getting something you can reference until you find a few things you like :)

Oh no, I was planning on getting two rolls from the deli and if it got too costly, I'd just buy the ham and stuff myself and make it up at home.

I just wondered if two rolls would equal two fried chicken legs and a bag of chips in terms of healthiness or would it be better just having the two rolls.

I'm not one for cooking, by the time the food is made I never feel hungry. :P

Well what if I buy a pack of ham, shred the cheese myself and buy turkey slices, would that be healthier than buying it from a deli?

There is no such scale of 'healthiness'. Neither of the options you mention are particualrly healthy. I'd imagine that two rolls stuffed with butter ham and cheese (from a deli or made at home) would have slightly more calories than a snackbox if that's what you're asking?

Really? I would have thought a snackbox would have been worse for you?

You live and learn :) am trying to cut down myself and have started small, replaced rolls with wraps, just to see if there was a difference :D

They're not healthy for you and wraps are also 200 cals of junk

If you don't like "big meals" then carry a lunchbox of cooked dinners. Stirfries, eggs, blah blah

See this is why I need to win the lotto, so I can have a nutritionist behind me pointing out stuff like this. :D

I am guesstimating, but I know that cuisine de france demi rolls have 500+calories in just the bread alone. I wouldn't think 2 chicken drumsticks (even deep fried ones) would be more than 500 calories, the chips would simply depend on how big the portion is.

In terms of 'healthiness' (if you are talking about the nutirents provided by either option) neither option provdes much that is essential to the body.

    See now I'm depressed. :P

I thought since the chips and fried chicken were really greasy compared to a roll that the roll would be less bad for you (so to speak) overall. But they're generally equal?

I imagine there's more fat in the snackbox, but white rolls tend to be full of sugar, packed ham is more water than anything else and cheese rocks in moderate.

Cook a large meal on say a Sunday evening and spread it out for lunches for the week?

see my issue here is I like something hot for lunch, so I'm used to getting a roll/wrap with a hot piece of chicken in it.

From the sounds of it, I'd be better off buying a couple of sausages from the hot counter and scoffing an egg or two afterwards? :D

It doesn't matter if calories are provided by fat (grease) or carbs (bread), if you eat too many of them you put on weight in the form of body fat.

So if you are burning all the calories you eat (i.e. you are not putting on body fat) it doesn't really matter which option you choose.

If weight is irrelevant to you and you are looking at getting a healthy nutrient dense diet you need to be thinking about eating more fresh fruits and veg, oily fish, eggs, lean meats etc (wholefoods in general). Think things that some straight from the ground or staright from an animal and are not overly processed and/or deepfired.

You could just buy one or something else yourself and use it, in my place a lads wife seems to upgrade stuff and he brings in the old stuff. If yours at home is a bit old you might upgrade and swap it.

I see a argos brand george foreman is only €7 at the moment. I use our one in work all the time.

    http://www.argos.ie/static/Product/partNumber/4233299/Trail/searchtext%3EGRILL.htm

    gets good reviews too

You probably spend more than €7 on your 2 rolls.

This may sound like a stupid question but what would you put in that for healthy eating?

My folks have one and it's used 99% of the time for toasted sandwiches and fry-ups
