Bought a digital HD receiver yesterday (Walker WP11DTB). Lad in the shop said that RTE2 was broadcasting some stuff in HD. Picture is good but definitely not HD even though a HD icon comes up when I switch to the channel. I have a HD TV and I have connected the box using a HDMI cable. Anything I've missed ??

it's a HD signal, but it's being upconverted to HD, it's not native HD.

Kinda like mono fm stations making your stereo symbol/LED light up! :D

Is some of the RTE2 material not HD? I thought some output was in HD.

Nothing in HD at present. All upscaled SD.

Im not quite so sure, The PQ on the film "The Rock" (on Sunday night IIRC) was fantastic. It looked better than some of the BBC HD stuff. I had to come close to the set just to check.

If it wasn't in HD they certainly fooled me, having said that some of their upscaled SD stuff has been noticeably better.

They have better upscaler than foks at home. No HD content yet.

Any idea when they will actually broadcast full HD content?

yeah will they have any hd content by the official launch? and will they be broadcasting Dolby 5.1 for movies/tv series? I hope its not going to be just for sport

I hope when they start proper HD broadcasts they leave films in their OAR and not crop them to fill the screen.

one of the lads brought back a Bluray the other night that was cropped to 16:9
    So OAR likely the exception.

I thought I read somewhere on these forums that RTÉ would have some kind of onscreen dog on RTÉ TWO to indicate if something was native HD, a la "4hd".

Yes, RTE said that's what will happen.

Brought back from where? Hard to believe a BluRay would be cropped. What was the film?

Since we're talking about the network that replaces a film's end credits with a banner saying "The End", I'm not holding out much hope.

Any idea if the first real HD broadcast will be before or after RTE2 moves to the second mux?

And how does the national public launch date of May 2011 fit in?

Will those three happen in some definite order?

    I imagine it will be:
    1. May Launch
    2. First HD broadcast
    3. Mux move

There is no official start date for the second mux in the public domain

    From RTÉNL in early March.
4.2 When Will SAORVIEW Start Showing High Definition (HD) Services?

RTÉ plans to have RTÉ Two showing High Definition (HD) sports, movies and drama programming as part of its schedule from the formal launch of the SAORVIEW in May 2011 (RTÉ Two HD Select). By September 2011 RTÉ anticipates that approximately 40% of the content on RTÉ Two will be in HD.

For up to date information, as it becomes available check www.saorview.ie.

More and more television programmes are now being made in HD and most new flat-screen televisions are now HD Ready. The launch of Free-To-Air HD services on SAORVIEW will likely lead to more and more Irish programming being made in HD in the coming years.

All Irish television broadcasters have intensions to move some, if not all, of their services to HD over the next few years. Services moving from Standard Definition (SD) to High Definition (HD) are subject to permission from the appropriate authorities. Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) and the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources (DCENR), as appropriate.
