I own a laminate bow, not sure I'd want to use one that wasn't professionally made. If it's going to shoot any kind of useful distance, it needs to support something like a 40-odd pound draw weight - I wouldn't fancy having that delaminate suddenly in my hands, especially not with an arrow nocked.

    Hi,

I did my Final Year project in college on archery..... and part of the project was making a laminated recurved bow.

I based mine on the FITA dimensions for a modern recurved bow with removable limbs. The central handle was made from cherry and the limbs were laminated from thin strips of maple and unidirectional fibreglass strips (botuff), all glued together with an epoxy glue (called smooth-on).

If you're interested in old-fashioned bow making, there is a good book called "The Bowyer's Bible" which has a lot of information.

If you need any more info, let me know...I still have my theses in the bookcase here.

i went down a minor rabbit hole of watching youtube videos on bowmaking recently; and not knowing what it was like in 2014, when this was posted, it would seem the situation has improved.

though i was watching videos more about making simple, non-compound bows.

Pamul, there used be a guy called Jack Pinson Master Bowmaker who went to traditional and heritage fairs around the country demonstrating his archery and medieval bow making technics as well as other medieval craft techniques. A lovely guy, very interesting. Im not sure where he is at at the moment he used be based in Clare.
