English guy with superiority complex made me lose it.

I was out last night (in Madrid where I live) and was talking to an English guy I know in passing who always insists on doing Father Ted impressions every time I meet him (bad sign right there). Last night we got onto the subject of some countries having a superiority complex because of their colonial pasts. I asked what he thought of the Irish and did he think he was superior to us (half joking....not expecting the reply I got) and he simply answered..."Yes". I asked 3 more times and rephrased it again and said, "So let me get this straight...you think you're superior to me simply because your English" and with no irony or sarcasm or hint of humour, he replied, "I should think so....yes".

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I flipped the lid.

Sorry...just wanted to vent that somewhere. How would you have handled this situation?

In my anger I said something along the lines of, "Everywhere I go, people hate the English...everywhere I go, people love me purely because I'm Irish...says it all".

I stooped to his level but I riled up. How can anyone be so ignorant?

Maybe you have an inferiority complex. If you felt you were on the same level as him you would of laughed it off but anger was your defense mechanism.

Oh sorry...I don't want it to turn into that. Just needed to express my anger and ask other how they would have handled it.

I've no problems with the English...lived there for 3 years and went out with one for 2 and a half. I think they're lovely generally.

Why should the OP laugh it off? She said there were no traces of comedy in the guys reply. Why should it be that she has an inferiority complex? Why can't it just be the case that she was taking an ignorant individual to task? Perhaps being challenged numerous times will encourage him to question himself, unlikely maybe, but he may even learn to curtail his socially abrasive and racially twinged statements when out .

The irony of that then giving out about the germans for trying to do the same thing. You get it with some english people alright, the idea of raping half the planet being a bad thing and something to be ashamed of never dawns on them.

You get people with a superiority complex from other countries too like france but its only been the english ones I've had personal experience with. And the few english that I did have this experience with tended to have military connections ie, work for the british army etc.

Oh and just to add, I heard from a mutual friend that a friend of that^^ guy his made a comment about me...he said, "She's nice to look at but dim like all the other Paddys"...I've never spoken to the other friend in my life.

These two guys have problems with the Irish and they teach kids. One of the guy's dad is a reverand. They masquerade as nice guys and are liked when actually they're a pair of racists. My blood is boiling thinking about it. They're always in the bar I drink and we have mutual friends....that's the tricky bit.

There is no bad feeling towards Germans at all in England. No underlying national hatred because they bombed some of our industrial cities to oblivion whatsoever. In fact, I think we realise that Germany now is a different country to Germany then, and treat them as such. I have been to Germany several times and the relationship between Germans and English people is quite warm.

Sadly, it doesnt seem like Ireland as a country has the same level of maturity judging by frequent comments on here and the response to the Queen's upcoming visit. I can't personally remember the mass hysteria caused by Mrs Merkel's frequent arrivals on our shores.

Thing is, this guy is viewed as a mild mannered son of a reverand. I told my friend from Venezuala later what happened and all he said was, "Ah come on...he's a nice guy!".

Because the person was English and there are tones of self hating irish people on this forum who are so paranoid about looking like RA heads that they will go as far as saying stuff like "cromwell was a nice person and did great things here" rather then talk about the truth even in a matter of fact fashion.

If the person in the OP was from any other country the replies would be a lot less against the op.

I think the irish can have an inferiorty complex. If i was you i wouldn't even have asked him the question.

I'm embarrassed by some of our TV presenters asking famous people what they think of the irish, what they think of ireland etc. I hate that cringeworthy rubbish.

But yeah alot of the english still think they are the bees knees even though they are shown time and time again to be useless. Just look at their cricket team..... their soccer team getting whipped by germany in the world cup...... their english golfers cracking under pressure..... the UK behaving like the US's poodle then getting snubbed by Obama etc..... they are in as much debt as we are (nearly).

Are they world beaters at anything anymore, they seem to cling to their colonial past because it was the last time they felt important.

I have gotten very used to people like that, it is rare that I meet an English person who does not do it in some way or another, not usually as blatant as in the case of the OP but I have come across similar situations several times, usually from southern English.

I see it all the time in little ways, like the people who will shop in an English Supermarket because "its better" even though they would buy the same products/brads as they would in locally run shops. There are multitudes of people here in the Algarve who will only drive English cars, even though the car may have been built in Spain/Portugal and transported to england then brought back by them, These people are sub-consciously doing the same as the guy in the OP.

When I lived in the middle east it was worse, because most of the Asian community treated them as if they were superior.

I often just find it easier to drop a few comments that will make them think again, depending on the persons personal circumstances.

Like one guy for example who is very blatant about it, but he has never had and English girlfriend because he doesn't like English women, most of the girlfriends I know he has had are Irish, his fiancée is German, the other nationality he is always slagging.

You have a grudge against English people because of the supermarkets the choose to shop in and the cars they choose to drive? Get a grip. You are just another with an anti-english complex.

I'd have ignored it and gained my own superior complex by seeing him be an idiot..

I had to do a 4 week course with an English lad who served up north during the troubles and we just ignored it because we're not idiots.. We did have a retarded Canadian who kept asking questions about the IRA which made it awkward but yea, best thing to do is just ignore it.

The Germans are not proud of what they did though, they apologised for it and say they were wrong. They don't hold on to part of the UK either. Germans on average are completely educated as to their wrong doings. Few English have a clue what happened over here. Many English don't even understand Ireland is not part of the UK , or the Northern Ireland situation.

If the Queen was coming over here to address the issues of past wrong doings and make a public apology, some people in England would go nuts claiming England never did any wrong. Talking about maturity? Maturity is taking responsibility and admitting wrong doing. The Germans did this, the Americans did this re the native americans.

As for a warm relationship between the German people and the English? The English are constantly shoving WW2 in the Germans faces, generally the English are the most disliked people in Europe as far as the Germans are concerned.

The Irish and the English get on far better then the germans and the english from what I've seen.

Lastly, the UK had war with Germany, yeah. If 85% of British history was about the persecution of the British people by the German Empire, of which to this day the Germans were proud of, NOT ashamed of, then your comparison to Germany would make more sense.
