maybe that explains why people actually do get married, because other people do.

Surely the concept of marriage wouldn't exist in a world where people don't marry.

maybe that explains why people actually do get married, because other people do.

A lot of customs/traditions/practices are adhered to solely due to conditioning.

eating/drinking/breathing would not be among them but marriage possibly could.

still there must be some underlying reasons that most cultures had something akin to marriage (albeit to more than one partner and one gender in some cases) - maybe these reasons are not as relevant now but it seems to have been almost universally desirable to have some sort of a formal arrangement and it seems it still is (cant all be due to blindly following tradition can it?)

    or am I incorrect?

anyway - I suspect if I lived in world with no marriage then I myself would be unlikely to get married following instead the lead of every other member of my species.

I think it could be a great film believe it or not

sci-fi/rom com and action blockbuster all rolled into one genre blurring roller coaster ride.

just on the strength of this thread alone Michael Bay is probably already intimidating some desperate media graduate into storyboarding a cyber highway chase scene involving lots of explosions and some tart in a latex wedding dress or something

I'm confused, if nobody got married, then there would almost certainly be no marriage.

So therefore I wouldn't get married because marriage wouldn't exist.
If something is possible, then someone, somewhere has most likely done it.

AH yeah....but they probably think its funny that you asked if they would get married in a world where nobody gets married

if you had proposed time travel to a world/parallel earth/other dimension where there is no marriage but you knew it...would you then get married even though no one else was.............................

No, it means nobody gets married, the choice is there.

Although unmarried myself, I respect the institution of marriage...

What's the reason for being reasonable?

    Is that an unreasonable question?

In a world where crisps didn't exist, would you eat crisps?

does the humble potato, deep fat fryers and cheese and onion flavoring exist and do I bring the knowledge of what happens to thin slices of potato when fried in oil with with me?

if yes...then yes I would eat crisps and attempt to sell them for a profit to my new parallel friends

    What kind of crisps?

I wouldn't eat bloody Tayto anyway, too salty.

No, it means nobody gets married, the choice is there.

If the choice was there then it would exist because someone would want to get married

there's all sorts of nutters at large

Eat crisps, they exist. so does marriage

I preferred Kofi Annan.....he was slightly easier to understand.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,783 ✭✭✭Hank_Jones

The fact is that if marriage did exist, people would want to get married.

In a world where abortion exists, people want to get abortions.

In a world where murder exists, people get murdered.

    This thread is nonsense.

Been keepin' it Irish, didn't pay particular attention to the 'world' part of the title, oh well, I sit corrected, but in the mainstream, hanging isn't popular.

Marriage is a contract between a man and a woman whereby they legally commit to spend their lives together. The rest of it is socially implied. In different countries it means different things. In a lot of countries there remains arranged marriages, here luckily both parties agree and they get hitched. I’m really a romantic at heart.

(Do you think its a trend that people get married)

    No I don't anyway

I don't think its solely down to conditioning or a fad

I think that certain types of marriage (ceremonies etc) are a trend but that marriages of one type or another (not just christian) are also in part to do with a lot of peoples(psychological) need to have some sort of stable formalized arrangement when it comes to this part of their lives

    does that answer your question?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 34,418 ✭✭✭✭hondasam

    FACT

I'm happy you agree with me !

    marriage is not a trend.

Just made it more convoluted tbh.

    Another Ban Ki Mon conundrum.

Ah... we're all in a tissy.

If marriage didn't exist, then most likely, no-one would get married.

But then someone would invent it & it would become an "institution" and we "all" would.

The real question is -if it didn't exist, would there be a need to invent it?

:D I read it in the voice of that guy that used to be on every trailer. In the 80's and early 90's, practically every trailer started..'In a world where..'.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,739 ✭✭✭✭starbelgrade

I think its funny that some cant even fathom the idea. Some people think they must marry another person.

It must be really nice to be you. Laughing at the stupidity you see in others.

If you found someone who could share your time with & enjoy your mutual feelings of superior intellectual musings over others... would you marry her?

Even if marriage didn't exist? Would you?

Or are you sooo cool that you think that you'd be the one to invent it?

    Oh what a tissy.

It's one thing being an amateur philosopher. It's another thing being an amateur.

Do you mean in a world where marriage doesn't exist, so is therefore not the expected norm, would you commit to stay with the same one person for the rest of your life? Something I've often thought about. I'm not sure many people would.

So basically the op is asking if you are in Ireland and are gay?
    Juici Luci says no!
